To want hotels to stop putting velvet throws and pillows on the bed

And also sofas. They are just magnets for wank stains dirt. Why do they keep using them? I think washable items only on hotels beds please. Washed between every guest. And wipeable sofas. Urgh.

Does anyone actually like runners and has bought one for their own bed? If people don't like them enough to have them in their own houses how have the hotel industry become so smitten with them? Have bed runner manufacturers got a really good marketing team or something? I don't understand why they exist anywhere, let alone in a commercial industry. Surely cost saving idea number 1 would be "why exactly are we buying these useless dirt magnets no-one likes?"

Room101isWhereIUsedToLive · 24/09/2015 12:43

So that when people lie on a bed with their shoes on, the runner catches the mud and then gets changed, maybe?
Or it's a cheap way of adding something 'extra' to the room?

Do some people lie on a bed with their shoes on? I don't think I ever have

MuttonDressedAsGoose · 24/09/2015 12:57

I asked about runners a couple of weeks ago. They may serve to protect bedding from dirty suitcase wheels.

I throw runners and cushions in a corner.

I don't let them into clean my room every day... I will wipe down the bathroom with a used towel, then go get fresh pillow cases and towels from the cleaner, tipping her, and telling her not to bother cleaning my room. Every third day or so, I will ask them to clean and I will strip the bed so they know to change the linen (Actually this makes their job easier).

I raid a lot of maid's trollies.... I never see fresh cups or glasses on them. Glass and smooth porcelain aren't good for bacteria, so a hot rinse and a wipe with a clean cloth is sufficient.

JuanPotatoTwo · 24/09/2015 13:34

I've never used cups or glasses in hotels since going on holiday with my cousin and his wife thirty odd years ago. She used the glasses for her false teeth, and I've never successfully wiped the image from my mind.

Room101isWhereIUsedToLive · 24/09/2015 14:00

I do know of one person who while in my company lay on the bed with his shoes on, just before we were checking out I let him know exactly what I thought of that, gross

Jayne35 · 24/09/2015 15:14

Saveforthat Yes I can imagine the logistics of cleaning the glasses properly. I work in a Hotel and clean cups/glasses are put on the housekeeping trolleys to swap over, dirty ones taken to kitchen.

2rebecca · 24/09/2015 16:03

Recent hotels I've stayed in have had the glasses in plastic bags. I think my chance of getting ill from a dodgy glass is minuscule so am not going to worry about that.

DH too Mutton. He is addicted to stealing propelling pencils from the maids' trollies in one hotel we stay in a lot. They're very nice but how many propelling pencils does one man need?

I have to admit that I went to the Soho Hotel in London recently and purloined two notebooks and two very handsome pencils in green and white twizzles.

I'm looking at them now. They are very fine and I think they wanted me to have them.

RyanORiley · 24/09/2015 16:34

That reminds me limited I still have an apricot and white twizzle pencil from the Charlotte Street Hotel. Got engaged there and the pencil really wanted to be a momento.

It did ryan. That pencil wanted to be with you. The bathrobe probably did too...

I think it's the same hotel group. I must now go on a mission to get the full set from The Charlotte Street and the Covent Garden Hotel.

I wonder what the colour scheme is at Covent Garden?

RyanORiley · 24/09/2015 17:05

Well limited you might need to travel a bit further as well to get the full set, as Firmdale have a place in NYC too...

It's a hard life.

I am definitely on a mission to collect the full set of pencils now.

I've been to the Haymarket Hotel but didn't realise it was one of the group. I met Eric Cantona there. We shared a moment, but not that kind of moment.

He's gone to seed a bit but I probably still would.

StarlingMurmuration · 24/09/2015 17:30

Oh God, I wish I hadn't read this thread. I have to travel a lot for work - I thought I'd be safe in five and four star hotels it clearly not :(

Room101isWhereIUsedToLive · 24/09/2015 18:12

Welcome to capitalism darling, where making money is the chief concern.

PressTheAButton · 24/09/2015 22:16

Bed runners, throws and decrotive pillows are awful and I hate to think how dirty they are. I throw them all on the floor.

I always rinse hotel glasses.

I find that good b and bs are cleaner than hotels. I only like staying in places that are spotless.
