To think intelligent people shouldn't behave like this - who are the secret dirty devils at work?

I work in an office with mostly university level educated people yet I'm constantly surprised at the state of the kitchen area (just fridge, sink, microwave and coffee/tea making facilities). A few people seem unable to place their mug or tea spoons in the dishwasher and just dump them in the sink. Some seem to run water into the bowl for their dirty mug to sit in until, well I'm not sure, maybe until it magically washes itself.
Now to the toilets - there is keypad entry so only us lot can use them yet these clever people often drop bits of loo paper on the floor (seemingly clean little pieces), surely normal people would pick this up? What is wrong with people?

The kitchen thing is caused by it getting to a certain state and then everyone thinks one more cup won't make adifference/everyone else does it.

We have solved it by having a rota and the responsible person's name being prominently displayed. Unfortunately, everyone clearing up after themselves just doesn't work, but our staff room is immaculate now.

Still working on the toilet...

Probably waiting for the cleaning fairies a.k.a the cleaner to appear. I've worked in offices cleaning and the amount of signs telling staff to clean their own dishes is unreal I was always faced with a mountain of cups and plates to put in the dishwasher as it seemed the poor loves couldn't open the dishwasher door or know how place a cup on the rack

Our work toilets are fucking grim. They're mixed gender too. Encountered a proper puddle of piss on the floor earlier. Everyone in my office is a lawyer yet don't seem to be able to piss straight and don't know what a toilet brush is for.

I'm constantly amazed by the supposedly quite intelligent people who have secured a place at my university yet can't flush a turd down a toilet. I mean, really.

I'm not sure what their level of education has to do with it. But they're all adults and should know better!

Being clean and tidy is not related to intelligence so YABU. Just wash your own stuff up and other stuff if you're feeling generous or have the time. It's not that important.

IME, the working classes (I mean real working class, old fashioned council estate/back to back houses type working class) are far more fastidious about house keeping standards than more upwardly mobile types, so YABU to be surprised on the grounds of level of education.

Oh god I forgot halls of residence. I think I've blocked it out. I used to have to hunt for my dishes as I was the only one who washed them up so my flat mates would use mine then hand them back dirty. I'm not an obsessively clean person but some people are gross!

When I worked in one Oxbridge department, we had to put up notices in the Ladies' with instructions on how to use them nicely. People did keep the kitchen area nice though.

Our work kitchen was getting so grim that the boss completely emptied it of everything: plates, mugs, cutlery, microwave, the lot. Only tea, coffee, sugar, fridge, cleaning stuff and bin left. No-one can heat meals any more, and if you want a hot drink you have to bring in your own mug. Anything left unwashed is now chucked away, so if you don't wash your stuff up it's gone! Works a treat.

I used to work for a financial organisation - very large, campus-style office, generally fairly sophisticated environment with most people wearing suits.

And the loos - utterly grim! I saw EVERYTHING smeared over the walls, left on the loo seat, floors etc. Apparent the mens' loos were even worse

During my last few months there I was pregnant and got quite freaked out at how unhygienic it was and ended up ringing Facilities on an almost daily basis as it was soooo horrible!

Some people are pigs. Pigs.

Someone in my workplace decided to deal with it by placing PA notes all over the worst affected items:

"My name is Roger and I am a microwave. I don't like being dirty so please clean me after using me!"

Gives me the RAGE. Call a meeting maybe?

I work with a mix of social work and nhs, our toilets and kitchen are pristine. But our fridges???? Let's not mention the fridged

I've seen so many appalling sights in our work toilets - I just can't imagine how disgusting my colleagues' houses are if this is how they treat the toilet at work!

Don't get me started on how many of them leave skidders in the toilet.

And yes, I know loo brushes are a whole thread of their own. In fact, maybe the loo brush avoiders are MNers?

Are you suggesting that people with degrees should be naturally tidier? Whereas if you haven't a single GCSE to your name, you're let off the hook for living in a sty???
