To have not noticed about the 5p carrier bag charge?

I feel it was sprung upon us! When was it officially agreed by government?

I was in Tesco today and saw the signs that from sometime next month it will be enforced.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with the charge and have heard about it being discussed for years, but I didn't know it had been made mandatory! The cashier looked at me pityingly when I queried it and said it has been all over This Morning the media for weeks. Have I been too distracted by Jeremy Corbyn's lovely visage to notice this?

JuJu why accuse treacle of lying? Have you ever selected the bagless option when buying groceries online?

I've had groceries delivered from Tesco without bags before. They had the shopping loose in the crates (except for the raw meat, that was in a bag), they put the crates by the door, and we took the groceries out of the crates into the house.

Pipbin · 15/09/2015 22:14

JuJu I have had deliveries without bags. They put the crates at the door and myself and the driver unpack. Treacle isnt lying.

Not worth the argument. I think that JuJu's grasp on reality is rather flimsy.

sazza76 · 15/09/2015 22:14

They dont have a say! The government have told them they HAVE to charge 5p minimum for bags!

sazza76 · 15/09/2015 22:16

No we dont walk it to the cupboard we unpack into the front room. Its not difficult at all, and lots of drivers do it as shown on this thread.

treaclesoda · 15/09/2015 22:16

Poor driver? It's his/her job. They are happy to do it, what with being paid for it and all...

SilverBirchWithout · 15/09/2015 22:16

Juju, you do realise the last Govt brought this law in because most of the public think its a good idea?

The majority of us want to do the right think, but need encouraging or nudging to do so. Changing behaviour that has been encouraged by supermarkets as it makes things efficient for them has to be done.

twirlypoo · 15/09/2015 22:18

Juju they just unload the crates onto the kitchen tops / table. Well, usually I do that bit while the guy is bringing in more crates.... But.... Yeah, no bags. Just crates. It's very commen!

JuJuMun69 · 15/09/2015 22:18

I think that its ridiculous to expect drivers to off load all the shopping and take them into your house...

My grasp on life is a real one Pipbin... unlike yourself of course or you wouldnt mention it Grin so lets not get into the insults.

Powaqa · 15/09/2015 22:19

but you will only get charged if you are buying from a company that has a total of 250 plus employees (People with fewer than 250 full-time equivalent employees don??t have to charge. If your store is part of a franchise or symbol group (sharing a brand and products) you only count employees in your business. You don??t count the franchise or symbol group as a whole.) a

You don??t charge for plastic bags that are:

for uncooked fish and fish products
for uncooked meat, poultry and their products
for unwrapped food for animal or human consumption - for example, chips, or food sold in containers not secure enough to prevent leakage during normal handling
for unwrapped loose seeds, flowers, bulbs, corns, rhizomes (roots, stems and shoots, such as ginger) or goods contaminated by soil (such as potatoes or plants)
for unwrapped blades, including axes, knives, and knife and razor blades
for prescription medicine
for live aquatic creatures in water
woven plastic bags
for goods in transport, such as at an airport or on a train, plane or ship
considered as sealed packaging for mail order and click-and-collect orders (regardless of handles)
returnable multiple reuse bags (bags for life)
used to give away free promotional material
used for a service but there??s no sale of goods, such as dry cleaning or shoe repairs

JuJuMun69 · 15/09/2015 22:20

Its ridiculous to expect this!

sazza76 · 15/09/2015 22:21

The only people making money are charities (fingers crossed including the one I chair). We are a small local charity who get lots of support from Sainsburys and this money would be fantastic for us.
The environment will benefit, theres a lot more to do but its a start.
And all the public have to do is ideally recycle bags and if not spend a little that heads of to the charity.
Slight inconvenience, most of us take the lazy option when possible. But other than that its win win all round :-)

treaclesoda · 15/09/2015 22:21

Why is it ridiculous? It's their job. And they're always very nice, they certainly don't give the impression that they resent doing it.

JuJuMun69 · 15/09/2015 22:22

Jesus christ. are you so pretentious... obviously so.. Grin

JuJuMun69 · 15/09/2015 22:23

Just stupid pretentious ridiculousness Grin no real world going on at all.. Flaky non stuff hahaha

sazza76 · 15/09/2015 22:24

So everyone who disagrees with you is either a liar or pretentious.

Pipbin · 15/09/2015 22:25

I think that its ridiculous to expect drivers to off load all the shopping and take them into your house...
Why? If it's part of their job then why is that ridiculous? Is it ridiculous when a taxi driver helps you with bags? Is it ridiculous when a waiter brings a bottled drink to your table and pours it into your glass?
If the driver has been told that delivering an unbagged delivery may involve helping up pack then then that's ok. Or do you think he shouldn't bring the delivery to the door at all and just shout from the van for the customer to come and get everything.

SilverBirchWithout · 15/09/2015 22:26

You have to admit that JuJu's contributions have enabled us to all discuss the benefits of this change and really get behind the idea. Thanks JuJu. Grin

Sirzy · 15/09/2015 22:26

Or a sheep sazza Wink

MissFitt68 · 15/09/2015 22:26

B&Q trialled charging for carrier bags earlier this year, it went well

And they give the proceeds to children in need, a charity they continually support

MissFitt68 · 15/09/2015 22:27

So agree silver

twirlypoo · 15/09/2015 22:27

You think a lot of things are ridiculous and a lot of people are sheep. I know this is radical, but, did you ever wonder if everyone else might be right and you might not be? Or, even more controversial, even if we were all wrong and it's all a big conspiracy, that actually, it's not all that big a deal anyway?

Pipbin · 15/09/2015 22:27

Just stupid pretentious ridiculousness grin no real world going on at all.. Flaky non stuff hahaha
Go on then, indulge me. What do you believe to be 'real world' stuff then?

treaclesoda · 15/09/2015 22:28

I'm lost. What is the stupid pretentiousness thing about?

FuzzyWizard · 15/09/2015 22:32

I might replace my cotton shopping bags... With baskets strapped to sheep. I'll lead them around behind me on a leash and then I can just load them up at the checkouts before heading home. They can "baa" at me to remind me what a mindless follower I am.

This thread has obviously pushed me past the point of sanity.

sazza76 · 15/09/2015 22:33

Treaclesoda, think it was aimed at the last few posters before she said it including me. We are pretentious and dont live in the real world (and are sheep and liars) because we think its ok for the driver not to use bags, and because we believe the charge is being put in for good reasona and charities will get the money.
