To have not noticed about the 5p carrier bag charge?

I feel it was sprung upon us! When was it officially agreed by government?

I was in Tesco today and saw the signs that from sometime next month it will be enforced.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with the charge and have heard about it being discussed for years, but I didn't know it had been made mandatory! The cashier looked at me pityingly when I queried it and said it has been all over This Morning the media for weeks. Have I been too distracted by Jeremy Corbyn's lovely visage to notice this?

And no, the supermarket should not pay for them..... The whole idea is that they are going to be less of them used clogging up landfill!!

MissFitt68 · 15/09/2015 19:55

Paper bags like in the states then? You know, the ones that split and fall apart

It's not just supermarkets that use plastic bags either

Sirzy · 15/09/2015 19:55

Ye juju because it is the checkout operators who have made these decisions isn't it!?

It's going to be annoying for a few weeks but it will soon get to be habit to take bags along.

JuJuMun69 · 15/09/2015 19:56

The supermarkets need to find another material then!

JuJuMun69 · 15/09/2015 19:57

Why should it be a habit? These multimillion £ companies need to find a solution.. not the consumer.

lljkk · 15/09/2015 19:58

Can't believe the hoohaw over 5p when it's easy to bring your own bags most the time.

londonrach · 15/09/2015 19:58

When all this happening?

Snoozebox · 15/09/2015 19:58

Am I being unreasonable in not noticing, though? Confused

Just take your bags! Supermarkets/shops didn't give out free bags years ago. It is massively better for the environment and the only way to get people into the habit of taking a bag is to charge. I have absolutely no problem with this and wish it had happened years ago.

ShadowLine · 15/09/2015 19:59

I'd forgotten all about this too. I knew it had been discussed in the news ages ago, but I was taken aback when I saw a status on FB earlier today saying the 5p charge would come in next month.

I do think it's a good idea that will cut down on the number of plastic bags going to waste. And if you don't want to advertise Tesco or any other shop, it is possible to buy shopping bags that don't advertise shops at all.

MissFitt68 · 15/09/2015 19:59

No the supermarkets.....or any retailer, does not have to 'find' anything!

It's up to the customer to sort their own transport (of both themself and their shopping) home safely...... Just like every other country in the world

gamerchick · 15/09/2015 19:59

I love a proper whine me... Bravo Grin

JuJuMun69 · 15/09/2015 19:59

Its the principle of course.

Alohamora · 15/09/2015 20:00

You very quickly get used to taking bags with you wen you go shopping. Remember to take them when going to EVERY shop not just supermarkets. ????It's become second nature for us now.

LittleMissStubborn · 15/09/2015 20:00

OP no you are not BU for not noticing. I feel it has been very much drip fed rather than a 'thing'

JuJuMun69 · 15/09/2015 20:01

Why? Why to people just accept this? Why do people have 7 bins in some areas? Its ridiculous!

Snoozebox · 15/09/2015 20:01

The smoking ban was drip fed as well, if I remember correctly. These things usually are, I think.

Well local charities where i live have just been asked to apply for a share of the money raised by bag sales in our local Co op so thats good

gamerchick · 15/09/2015 20:03

Ah man just wait till 16/17 when you can no longer get 10 smokes. That should be fun.

JuJuMun69 · 15/09/2015 20:03

Multimillion £ companies need to deal with this, how dare they pass the buck on to us.

Konserve · 15/09/2015 20:04

juju if you don't want to pay for bags just trolley the shopping trolley to the car, dump everything in the boot, job done.

Konserve · 15/09/2015 20:06

big companies don't deal with it without legislation...

Pipbin · 15/09/2015 20:06

Its about the consumer yet again being stung. Do you not understand this?

The idea is to cut down on the use of plastic bags.
If they pay for the bags, like they have been doing until now there isn't a plastic bag fairy you know, then the consumer isn't going to cut down as it will make sod all difference.
Is that so hard to understand?

chanie44 · 15/09/2015 20:07

From what I remember, the supermarkets didn't want to charge (which would save them money), so the government told them to reduce the amount of bags they gave out - the cashiers were supposed to only give our a couple of bags and keep the rest out of sight.

This didn't work as I routinely see them putting them piles of them in between customers.

I have a couple of shoppers, so where possible, I try to avoid getting plastic bags, but we still seem to be swimming in them. I use the ones we have to line the bins.

londonrach · 15/09/2015 20:07
