To have not noticed about the 5p carrier bag charge?

I feel it was sprung upon us! When was it officially agreed by government?

I was in Tesco today and saw the signs that from sometime next month it will be enforced.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with the charge and have heard about it being discussed for years, but I didn't know it had been made mandatory! The cashier looked at me pityingly when I queried it and said it has been all over This Morning the media for weeks. Have I been too distracted by Jeremy Corbyn's lovely visage to notice this?

I don't think the checkout operators scan every bag here. They get an option just like the self checkouts which asks how many bags were used (eg zero, or 5 or whatever) and it calculates the charge.

But the vast, vast majority of people bring their own bags or buy a couple of the big bags for life if they forget.

I've never seen myself as a sheep kinda girl. A pig, yes, perhaps. Covered in muck and snoozing in the sun I can identify with. Plus the whole added padding thing. Do you have any other animals you think we all are juju, or are you a bit sheep fixated? We could ask mnhq for an emoji if you like?

twirlypoo · 15/09/2015 21:22

I read your username as sheepyhead I think I've been on this thread too long Grin

Start from the premise that we need to cut down the amount of plastic out in the environment. And that one big issue is that people keep getting plastic bags given to them. They don't think much about it, because they're free, so valueless.
What do you do? Offer alternatives? Done. Made little difference. Tell people it's a bad idea? Yup, that's done too. Made no difference. Look at countries where plastic bags are charged for? Yup, and the proof is right there - the decrease in their use of plastic bags is huge.
Is it the only way plastic leaches into the environment? Of course not. But do we have to bloody well start somewhere? Absolutely. Is it the ultimate solution? No, but it's a start. Otherwise everyone sits round saying "It's not enough" and uses that as an excuse to do nothing.

If the consumer didn't pay the charge, no change in behaviour would be seen and increasing amounts of plastic will keep building up, littering the countryside and the ocean and killing the wildlife. It's not about being a sheep, it's about understanding that not much else short of asking to people to pay for something actually changes how they act.

It is known that plastic bags are a major killer of turtles, for example, as they look so much like the jellyfish the turtles eat.

Nobody is going to carry the costs, because we will not buy the bags.

Nobody will really lose out with this... except possibly the plastic bag manufacturers.

Will nobody think of the plastic bag manufacturers? Why should they lose money to giant thieving multinationals??

Sad Sad Sad

I love the bag sheepyhead

Ta1kinPeace · 15/09/2015 21:41

Lidl and Aldi have always charged for bags.
So I take my Waitrose green bags with me wherever I shop.
I'll be delighted to see less carrier bags in use
especially in the home delivery boxes.

On holiday I have three thin cotton bags that I can load up with stuff from markets

disposable carrier bags should be a thing of the past.

Orangeteddy · 15/09/2015 21:41

I do all my grocery shopping online. Both Tesco's and Sainsburys have confirmed they will add 40p to bagged deliveries no matter how many bags they use. I only use bags to make it quicker to unload the shopping from the crates. The next week i give them all back to the driver.

If i carry on with bags, this will add over £20 to my shopping annually so i will switch to bagless deliveries. However, this will make it hard for the driver to meet their 6 minute per delivery target as it will take me twice as long to unpack individual products from the crates. I was discussing this with Tesco's delivery driver last week and he said the drivers are all concerned that everyone will switch to bagless deliveries and it will be impossible as a result to make all the deliveries on time.

My suggestion would be some kind of trade in scheme for online grocery shops where the 40p is refunded if you give back the same amount of bags from the previous week. Otherwise, i can just see delivery costs going up further if not as many deliveries can be scheduled in a timeslot.

I get my groceries delivered without bags, and the delivery drivers have told me that most other customers do too. But I've never had a delivery driver run late yet and it's not something I've heard anyone else complain about either. I didn't know that each delivery was meant to take less than six minutes, but I don't think they've ever taken anywhere near six minutes to unload my shopping, even without bags.

CharlotteCollins · 15/09/2015 21:47

I unpacked my bagless delivery while the driver was bringing in the next crates, same as when I've had bags.

If it takes longer, they'll have to make allowances, surely? If noone is meeting targets you really have to take another look at your targets!

sazza76 · 15/09/2015 22:06

I don't understand why anyone would object.
The companies had no say in the matter at all. It was the government in reponse to environmental issues.
Stopping plastic is a good thing, yes more needs doing such as packaging but its a start
The money from those that choose to buy them will be going to charity. Some shops have started asking for nominations, others have named charities.'
It is not difficult to use reusable bags. Not in the slightest.
We all have a responsibility to protect our environment

JuJuMun69 · 15/09/2015 22:06

No you dont get your deliveries without bags treacle... they are in bags so not sure why youre lying Grin how do they get them out of the crates then? haha. Do they hand them to you?

JuJuMun69 · 15/09/2015 22:09

Stopping plastic? the government are liars do you not get that? do you not get this is a smoke screen to them doing jack shite? you pay? really? I wouldnt hand anything over to someone without putting it in somthing for them to carry... thats down to me!

JuJuMun69 · 15/09/2015 22:11

The mulitmillion £ companies DO have a say... they say.. guess what, im not passing it down to the consumer!

JuJuMun69 · 15/09/2015 22:12

It is NOT going to charity, do you not get that? its not.

sazza76 · 15/09/2015 22:12

JuJu I have had deliveries without bags. They put the crates at the door and myself and the driver unpack. Treacle isnt lying.

treaclesoda · 15/09/2015 22:12

Eh? What do you mean they are in bags? My grocery delivery comes in the crate, no bags. Everything is loose in the crate (although and obviously some items are in their own packaging). I lift them out of the crate and set them on the kitchen table. Confused

Sirzy · 15/09/2015 22:13

Do you have any proper evidence to back up that claim juju?

The supermarket I use seems to do a lot for local charities so I have no reason at all to believe they would lie about this. Why would they?

sazza76 · 15/09/2015 22:13

Juju it is going to charity. I am chair if a charity and our local co-op and sainsburys have invited us to apply.
I don't understand why you think everyone is lying.

JuJuMun69 · 15/09/2015 22:14

yourself and the driver unpack? you both walk the stuff into your cupboards? really? poor bloody driver.
