Plastic bag law is a waste of time

Normal plastic bags are so thin and create hardly Any waste and many people reuse them. I use them to line my bins. So now will have to buy bin bags, that are usually thicker with more plastic.

These bags for life use a lot of plastic and I've seen study's that they waste far far more as they get grotty and people bin them after a dozen or so uses.

If they really wanted to make a change how about getting rid of all the plastic veg comes in or have a plastic bottle deposit scheme?

Its still all this stuff about a free bag if you buy raw fish or razor blades.

We've had it in Wales for ages. I think it's a great idea. Has certainly made me look at my usage a lot more and recycle.

And we have signs up in the local shops displaying how much has been raised and which local charity it's gone to. I was amazed at how much it racked up

Bacoyum Tesco does or is starting to do that too.

The benefit for me (and in general) is that cashiers don't start packing up and using up too many bags when I brought my own.
I really hated their confused looks as to why I had brought my own bags and why I was moving items from the 100s of extra bags they put them on.

I find that I'm much happier now. :)

Tesco have offered the option of with or without carrier bags for an online shop for ages. We always decant them from the van crates to the folding crates at the door as it's easier to sort than getting them in carriers.

I like plastic on my vegetables and fruit - it means maybe one person has touched them in the packaging factory but not a hundred in the supermarket. As for the plastic bag law - I go to ASDA 9 times out of 10 and to Sainsbury's the one time. I have bought two bags for life (50p each) in Sainsbury's and am going to carry them around when shopping - in ASDA. Passive resistance! ;)

And you forgot all the bugs and wild animals that have walked, peed and pood on them! Surely that sinks all the way n after a few weeks in a field?

Apologies if already been mentioned but the Co-Op have started using bags that you can then use in your food caddy. Brilliant idea!

so what about the tons of:

plastic and glass bottles/cans/fag packets/fag butts/ filthy nappies (and someone throws theirs into my garden!)/crisp packets etc etc etc that's junking up thye place then?

I don't know where you live but round my way most of the things you mention go in the recycling bins. Stops them junking up the place.

Becker - you make a good point about all the rest of the rubbish - but maybe this is a good start - a small step, but every journey starts with a single step, doesn't it.

I'm a bit sceptical about this; sure it cuts down on what is essentially branded litter but does little to address the overall problem of plastic waste when you compare the vast amount of plastic waste generated at the back of store. Pallet wrap for example. It's a bit of being seen to do the right thing imo. I shop online and go with the no bags option today I got six bags which were free. How does that work?
