to not leave tips for haircuts that cost £42

southeastastra · 10/09/2015 21:27

i will usually leave a tip all the time £2 here and there and even up to a fiver for a particularly good cut

but i will not leave a tip for a cut that now costs £42 it's not unreasonable is it

I never tip and never pay more than £35 for a haircut. Why would you tip? I never knew people did. I do in restaurants, mostly, but depends if the staff actually did anything beyond the bare minimum. If the service and/or food are crap, def no tip.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 10/09/2015 22:14

No YNBU. Tipping is at your descretion . I always tip but I only give about 2 extra. If they got that off every customer. They,'d be on to a good thing.
I do agree £42 for a hair cut is beyond astronomical.

GrinAndTonic · 10/09/2015 22:15

I never tip. Why should I? No one tips me. Do you tip the person on the checkout at tesco or kid making coffee at McDonald's?

SinglePringle · 10/09/2015 22:16

Why on earth primal?

BathshebaDarkstone · 10/09/2015 22:16

I leave a tip when they cut the DC's hair if I can afford it. Nobody touches my hair. Smile

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 10/09/2015 22:16

Sorry sent too quick. I think it's fair to say they've added their own tip on there
£42 for a hair cut. I'd want a share of the business for that price

SinglePringle · 10/09/2015 22:17

Sorry - why on earth what primal?

Helpmeoutofthemaze · 10/09/2015 22:19

I used to tip a pound when my haircut was £10-12 but since the price seems to have risen by about 100%, I don't tip and I go less frequently. The price of my dc's quick haircut also went up loads so I won't tip for mine when I have to pay too much for a simple, quick job on them.

Havalina1 · 10/09/2015 22:20

At my place the owner does everything, (small salon) so do I not need to tip??

jorahmormont · 10/09/2015 22:20

Why is it ridiculous to tip delivery drivers? The pay is measly, and the petrol money they're given doesn't even begin to cover the amount they actually spend.

People tipped very generously when OH was a Dominos delivery driver.

steff13 · 10/09/2015 22:21

I pay $35 for a haircut, and I always tip $10, $20 at Christmas. I pay $65 for a Brazillian wax, and tip $15.

blibblobblub · 10/09/2015 22:23

I don't tip my hairdresser but she is bloody wonderful so I imagine I'll take her something nice at Christmas.

steff13 · 10/09/2015 22:24

At my place the owner does everything, (small salon) so do I not need to tip??

No, you don't tip the proprietor.

Do you tip the person on the checkout at tesco or kid making coffee at McDonald's?

I would if they gave me the same personal level of service as the woman who cuts my hair or the one who waxes my hooha.

BIWI · 10/09/2015 22:24

Well, jorah, because I think it's their job to deliver. And they don't have to deliver 'well', unlike waiters have to wait well or hairdressers have to cut/style hair well. And if their companies are paying shit wages, then that's not my fault is it?

I think it's a shocking argument that customers should have to pay to make up for the fact that the company isn't paying proper wages.

Wizadora1 · 10/09/2015 22:25

I don't tend to tip often. They're being paid to cut my hair so I pay for that cut, I wouldn't pay less for a bad job so I don't think it's necessary to pay more if it's done well.
Surely that's what they are given a wage for? Surely it would be a minefield if we tipped everyone for a job well done.

blibblobblub · 10/09/2015 22:25

Oh come on, single, I think it was pretty obviously "why on earth do you pay that much for your hair doing?".

(Or that's how I read it anyway!)

jorahmormont · 10/09/2015 22:28

BIWI I never said they should tip, I just don't think it's ridiculous that people do tip if they arrive quickly and are polite and friendly when they deliver the pizza.

And they do have to deliver well. They have to drive around busy cities and towns at all hours of the day, following either a sat nav or, in most cases, an A-Z as the sat navs are wrong and don't find the postcode, and get the food to people quickly. And yes, that's their job, but they have to do it well in the same way that waiting on is a waiter's job and they have to do that well.

steff13 · 10/09/2015 22:28

They're being paid to cut my hair so I pay for that cut, I wouldn't pay less for a bad job so I don't think it's necessary to pay more if it's done well.

You don't pay less for a bad job, but you can have it corrected for free or get your money back, or at least the salon should offer that. So, ultimately, you shouldn't be paying for a bad job.

SinglePringle · 10/09/2015 22:32

Nope Blibb - I can't tell if it's the cost of my hair or the tip (or both) that Primal found shocking.

And given that another poster up thread pays around £300 for a cut and colour, I was questioning why I'm singled out. Especially as it's not that much in London. Average cost.

AvaCrowder · 10/09/2015 22:35

My dsis worked for the hairdressing council (quango) before the minimum wage. The juniors were being paid on national average about £85 per week. I always tip, and even if now they are in receipt of mw I still tip. At least 10%. If my haircut costs more than the person doing it earns in a week, I'm no socialist, but I can make their salary a bit better for not much more than the cost of my chop.

Wizadora1 · 10/09/2015 22:35

Steff I'm not normally brave enough to complain so that's probably why I would pay for a bad job!
I do think that if we tipped everyone who did a good job it would be ridiculous, I'm not sure where the line is but I don't think hairdressers necessarily do a job that particularly needs tipping.

Kaekae · 10/09/2015 22:36

I never tip at the salon anymore. I pay anything between £75 to over £100 for a cut and colour so I think they get enough!

jorahmormont · 10/09/2015 22:36

Back on topic, I always pay by card as I don't tend to carry any cash on me, so I don't tip because they don't have the option to add a tip on the card machine. I need to remember to take cash with me next time, the hairdressers we go to is such good value and they do a great job.

I like Frankie & Benny's system because you can add a tip on the card machine.

BoyFromTheBigBadCity · 10/09/2015 22:38

I don't know what to say about tipping, but round here 40 quid for a decent haircut is not expensive. I don't tip, but I always use the same hair dresser (he is great) which to me helps him personally cover the cost of his chair.

WellWoman · 10/09/2015 22:40

Agree with Single. Can't understand all the shock over paying 80 or 100 quid for a haircut, that is not unusual in London...and more.
I tip 10 per cent at hairdressers, plus a quid or two for the person who washes it.
My mum always tipped for her Demi Waves, and later her cut and blow drys when I was growing up, as did her friends, so I was taught that you tip in hairdressers. I was surprised to read on MN that so many don't.
