Is my mum right in thinking I am slovenly re school uniform?

My mum is despairing of me today. She came over whilst I was getting all the new clothes ready for school. She was very disapproving of me letting my primary school aged sons to school in brightly coloured socks/ character socks stating that children should be wearing standard black/grey socks in order to look smart. Is purchasing smart hosiery for school important when they are so young? It seems so dreary to force them to wear black/grey socks every day. They will be going back wearing angry birds, minions and monsters socks (they chose them themselves). Mum has always been a bit anal (she also can not understand why I refuse to iron underpants) but does she have a point here?

Who is even going to see his socks? Nothing wrong with character ones

JeffsanArsehole · 29/08/2015 15:03

Yes she does

In loony tunes anti sock land. Which is a special place for crazies like her.

Pipbin · 29/08/2015 15:04

I teach reception. Most of the boys wear character socks (the girls tend to have frilly white numbers). The only problem I have with them is that they tend to distract some children as they show their friends the socks they have on.

MerryMarigold · 29/08/2015 15:05

Nah. Those grey and black ones are so hard to pair. I don't tend to buy character one as they're more expensive but definitely stripey ones or whatever. New school seems to be white socks for girls which made me sigh. White!! What a stupid colour for a sock, especially if you have eczema and need to use mild detergents.

NobodyLivesHere · 29/08/2015 15:05

i can't bring myself to give a shit about anyones socks.

Haggisfish · 29/08/2015 15:06

Does his school specify? Dcs bog standard school says socks must be grey white or black and plain. I personally think it's important to comply with uniform rules.

TheRealAmyLee · 29/08/2015 15:08

My dds wear white or gray socks but only with skirts as they are on show so plain looks much better. My ds wears whatever he likes with pants (as does my dd when she wears pants)

CigarsofthePharoahs · 29/08/2015 15:08

My ds's school have said grey or black socks only.
Sad
Let them enjoy fun socks while they're young.

TheFairyCaravan · 29/08/2015 15:08

Those grey and black ones are so hard to pair.

How are they? Confused They usually come in packs of 5 pairs, so you have 10 identical socks. They are a piece of piss to pair!

bigkidsdidit · 29/08/2015 15:09

I bought plain black and plain red. They do look smarter I think.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 29/08/2015 15:09

Mine have always had school socks! I've never thought about it before, but it's just another part of the uniform isn't itConfused

How can plain black socks possibly be hard to pair? They all match each other! Ds1 has black ribbed, ds2 has plain. We never end up with an odd sock because they all match each other.

bloodyteenagers · 29/08/2015 15:12

Fun socks all the way, regardless of gender.

Naughtylist · 29/08/2015 15:12

I don't think there is a sock policy Haggis. I certainly hope not as that would mean I have been brazenly flouting it for the last 2 years Sad

Black grey or white Sad

MrsMook · 29/08/2015 15:15

Ds will have to wear dark socks. Yawn.

No one's ever had an issue with me teaching in my knee high stripy socks though Grin

SurlyCue · 29/08/2015 15:16

The only problem I have with them is that they tend to distract some children as they show their friends the socks they have on.

Grin this is a very cute problem to have.

SilverBirchWithout · 29/08/2015 15:19

When my DS was a little bit older than this, the craze was always to wear brightly coloured non-matching socks. Sock "pairing" was not required!. Your DM would have had hysterics. Grin

MakStout · 29/08/2015 15:22

I get grey and black patterned socks for DS and grey knee length socks and grey tights for DD.

BoomBoomsCousin · 29/08/2015 15:23

I'm pretty slovenly about school uniform. I hate it - dull, added expense, faffy and either not smart or impractical. Pretty much the only things I take much care over are their knickers and socks which aren't specified by the policy. I think colourful socks are the opposite of slovenly.

monkeysox · 29/08/2015 15:25

Secondary school does specify grey or black socks!

AndNowItsSeven · 29/08/2015 15:25

Never heard of school allowing non school socks. I agree with your mum , it's not very smart.

Gileswithachainsaw · 29/08/2015 15:28

aw let them have the fun socks. The rest of the uniform is like Mr beans wardrobe. grey and dull. just shirts and trousers all the same .

5madthings · 29/08/2015 15:30

I think our school says grey/black socks but no one ever says anything about it, kids were a variety of socks, tbh by the end of the school year I am just pleased if mine have a matching pair...

We do have some black and grey socks, but some can ended up more faded if they have been washed more or different brands and sizes etc mean they don't always end up paired.

So madthings have a mix of character socks or patterned socks etc and plain ones, dd starts next week and I have bought her white socks as that seems to be what the girls wear. At least hers are easy to tell apart from the boys socks, with four boys in various sizes it's a pita pairing socks, I hate it.
