Is my mum right in thinking I am slovenly re school uniform?

My mum is despairing of me today. She came over whilst I was getting all the new clothes ready for school. She was very disapproving of me letting my primary school aged sons to school in brightly coloured socks/ character socks stating that children should be wearing standard black/grey socks in order to look smart. Is purchasing smart hosiery for school important when they are so young? It seems so dreary to force them to wear black/grey socks every day. They will be going back wearing angry birds, minions and monsters socks (they chose them themselves). Mum has always been a bit anal (she also can not understand why I refuse to iron underpants) but does she have a point here?

Our primary school specified requested grey socks. Being naive I complied.Hmm They did have character pants though Grin

Yes, I do wonder about the whole uniform thing. Ds1s old school was non uniform, high achieving, was an Ofsted outstanding, but has gone to a good at the same time as introducing uniform. Not sure if there's a correlation.

TheExMotherInLaw · 29/08/2015 16:29

Go for character socks as long as you can!
My kids had to have certain socks for school - as soon as dd left she went in for mad socks - randomly chosen. DS also just has a sock bag, and simply selects any 2 of a morning.
OP, your mum is BU - I didn't think there was anyone left who still ironed undies.

godsavethequeeeen · 29/08/2015 16:31

Mine always wear black school socks. They don't show the dirt and look smart.

I'm with your mum on this I'm afraid.

BikeRunSki · 29/08/2015 16:31

Ds's school encourages grey or black socks/tights. I'm sure they'd enforce if they were slowed to. Friend sent her dd wearing tights the same colour as school jumper and was sent a gentle reminder of school uniform.

MistressMerryWeather · 29/08/2015 16:32

Jesus, I just realised DS1 does have weekend pants.

Blush :o

godsavethequeeeen · 29/08/2015 16:34

merrymarigold yes, weekend socks too. Funky patterned ones.

School don't specify pants (that would be nuts) so they wear any pants they like.

Plain black all the way. With twin DS' pairing would be a nightmare otherwise.....

In my defense the pants thing is just habit.

I grab a pack plain trunks to match his vests when I'm uniform shopping.

I wouldn't not let him wear his purple Spongebob pants if he felt inclined to that morning. :o

Thankfully DS1 has always been one of those kids who couldn't care less about what he's wearing.

LynetteScavo · 29/08/2015 16:42

My DCs schools have always specified sock colour.

One past HT, who was a knob head and only lasted a year told a gril off for wearing white socks with winter uniform. Apparently they should only wear grey socks with winter uniform. Until then, I always thought girls could wear white socks all year round. It seems not. Boys can only wear grey socks all year round.

Hair accessories are closely monitored too.....

I'm happy to go with uniform socks and hair accessories, but insisting boys hair is too long or too short gives me the rage.

Gingermakesmesick · 29/08/2015 16:43

Mine have grey socks. Sorry!

StampyMum · 29/08/2015 16:43

DS has school socks (grey) and school pants (white). I have no idea why! But YANBU and your mum can stuff off Grin

bigkidsdidit · 29/08/2015 16:47

I care about my dc looking smart in the same way I care about myself looking smart. I wouldn't go to work in a stained jumper or with unbrushed hair or wearing a tracksuit so I Treat my school the same. I think most people do, judging from the rows of combed ironed black sock wearing children at our school!

bigkidsdidit · 29/08/2015 16:48

Treat my dc, not school

Doublebubblebubble · 29/08/2015 16:50

My dd's School has a "sock" policy but it is there as an example really - no one follows it at all. I think that everyone having to wear the same colour would be boring and most importantly, unhygienic (can you imagine the amount of accidental swapping during p.e and the like)

hiccupgirl · 29/08/2015 16:50

YABU if the uniform specifies a sock colour. DS's primary school has grey ankle socks listed on the uniform for boys and white for girls.

And tbh you can get mega packs of plain grey socks very cheaply.

MerryMarigold · 29/08/2015 16:53

I'm not sure character socks are in the same league as bolognaise stained, toothpaste marked school jumpers...

But anyway, mistressmerryweather, PLEASE don't tell me you put your ds's clothes including underwear out for him to put on. God forbid, he may put the wrong pants on otherwise!!

I think some people need to let go of the chestnut being held tightly in their buttocks.

I have just been reminded of when I was in school.
The uniform policy was changed because I used to flout it so much and they could never explain why I was wrong.
It stated the colour of socks - black, white, grey.
Every day for a year I wore odd socks within the colour scheme.
Following year the words a matching pair was also written into the policy.

I bet the school was so glD when I left as I managed to flout many of their ridiculous rules that were open to interpretation. Had lots of fun with the uniform skirt and the horrible gym skirt (who the fuck designed that vile thing anyway?)

motherinferior · 29/08/2015 16:58

Socks with jolly coloured toes get round the sock uniformity.

Just saying....

MistressMerryWeather · 29/08/2015 16:59
Blush

I DO!

But it has nothing to do with arse clenching tree nuts, it's just habit.

I've always gotten things ready the night before. As I said if he woke up one morning and said 'I don't want to wear those pants' I would wonder if he had been abducted by aliens in the night have no problem with it.

I am squashing his individuality and raising little sheep children, aren't I?

Slammerkins · 29/08/2015 17:05

It's easier to buy a big pack of school black/grey socks imo but if the school doesn't specify then it's not really a problem.

insanityscatching · 29/08/2015 17:16

Dd has to wear black socks for school but I buy them with the coloured toe and heel which makes them easy to pair. Because the coloured bits aren't visible they meet the uniform policy.
