Is my mum right in thinking I am slovenly re school uniform?

My mum is despairing of me today. She came over whilst I was getting all the new clothes ready for school. She was very disapproving of me letting my primary school aged sons to school in brightly coloured socks/ character socks stating that children should be wearing standard black/grey socks in order to look smart. Is purchasing smart hosiery for school important when they are so young? It seems so dreary to force them to wear black/grey socks every day. They will be going back wearing angry birds, minions and monsters socks (they chose them themselves). Mum has always been a bit anal (she also can not understand why I refuse to iron underpants) but does she have a point here?

Always just buy black or grey as do most other parents other than a few rebels.

MerryMarigold · 29/08/2015 15:31

Hard to pair because, unless you buy 20 socks exactly the same every year, there will be black socks and black socks - with subtle but maddening differences. There's hand me down socks, replacement socks, gift socks. If they're all black it drives me crazy. I hate pairing dh's socks and now get the kids to do it.

ProcrastinatorGeneral · 29/08/2015 15:32

My boys wear odd socks, usually on purpose. Even to school. Inhave no idea what my eldest wears to seniors sock wise. I've not had a letter home so I'm assuming she's not flouting any rules.

AugustRose · 29/08/2015 15:34

No she doesn't have a point - DS will be wearing whatever socks are in his drawer.

I'm actually surprised that so many primary schools specify the colour of socks! Our school doesn't even have a uniform policy other than a jumper for trips/events outside of school.

AliceDoesntLiveHereAnymore · 29/08/2015 15:37

Ds1 wears black socks during the week except Friday when he can choose fun socks. School haven't said anything yet.

Although I admit that my adult dd frustrates me as she put dgs in white polo shirts that are so dingy they are actually grey and too small or short. His trousers are wrinkled and too short. His jumper is usually grubby or frayed. It's not a lack of money as she and her DP have all the latest games and tech stuff. She just can't be bothered. I mentioned it once (in a tactful way) and she got in a snit. I haven't mentioned it since. But not a clue what coloured socks he wears. Daren't ask. Hmm

StrumpersPlunkett · 29/08/2015 15:38

FWIW, unless the school states socks I wouldn't care.
however, our local school states grey socks and black pump/plimsole type indoor shoes and it does get on my nerves that kids come into school wearing rainbow array of socks and multitude of indoor footwear.
It can't honestly be for financial reasons as the indoor plimsoles are £3 and grey school socks are as cheap as mulitcoloured ones.

It is official, I am a grumpy old bag!!!

dementedpixie · 29/08/2015 15:39

I think it's crazy for a school to specify sock colours. DD does tend to wear plain ones as she wears skirts but ds will wear whichever ones he wants as he wears trousers so you don't really see them

SurlyCue · 29/08/2015 15:40

Confused who needs 'smart' looking socks when youre 6? They arent chairing the governors meeting! Uniforms are enough. Theyre entitled to have a teensy bit of their own personality in their clothes otherwise we have a nation of clones. Also, if they havent got character socks then theyre just going to end up having to show their mates their character pants instead Grin

SaucyJack · 29/08/2015 15:41

Mine have always had school socks. DD1 likes plain black, and DD2 likes embroidered white knee-socks. Just assumed it was part of the uniform.

Sirzy · 29/08/2015 15:43

Ds wears grey socks to school - 7 matching pairs no problem with trying to match them that way.

Personally I prefer grey or black socks for school but couldn't care less what anyone else does.

Dragonglass · 29/08/2015 15:45

My sons' school states black or grey socks but they don't enforce it. Ds4 wears brightly coloured odd socks, even with shorts! His choice and tbh if you can't wear bright odd socks at 7 when can you wear them!

Some of the socks have an animal face on the heel, but he wears them upside down so that the face is on top. He is quite funny about his socks.

I am a fan of port n starboard socks. Green on the right foot and red on the left.

Hygellig · 29/08/2015 15:53

My son's school issued us with a uniform list. (He is starting Reception this year). It specifies grey socks for boys and white or navy for girls.

If he didn't have this requirement he would probably be going in orange socks every day.

MerryMarigold · 29/08/2015 16:11

Do these black/ grey/ navy children have 'weekend socks'??

Nataleejah · 29/08/2015 16:13

If school doesn't have a sock policy, then who cares what color they are. Looking "smart" in primary is nonsense

bigkidsdidit · 29/08/2015 16:15

Yes, ds has non- school socks the same as he has non- school shorts Confused

ScribbleScrabble · 29/08/2015 16:17

Black or grey socks - anything else looks a bit scruffy, Minion socks are great for pre-school, weekends and holidays :)

motherinferior · 29/08/2015 16:19

I think my kids' secondary has a sock policy but I only know this because DD1, being a red-blooded and normal sort of young woman, vigorously flouts it.

MistressMerryWeather · 29/08/2015 16:19

I buy five pairs of grey socks for school because they are easy to pair. Nothing to do with looking smart.

I am always losing bloody character socks.

Pooseyfrumpture · 29/08/2015 16:20

Our primary not only has a sock specification that is different for boys and girls, it also changes depending on the time of year.

I've got 3 boys and they all have the same socks. First up, best dressed Wink

ProcrastinatorGeneral · 29/08/2015 16:20

If a state primary tried to tell me what colour socks my children were to wear I would quite simply tell them to fuck off. I tolerate a uniform of sorts, but I think they're ridiculous for the most part.

Eva50 · 29/08/2015 16:21

Ds3 (9) starts the school year with a pack of black socks but ends the year with whatever is still in his drawer, intact and fits him. Yes, he has weekend socks.

MerryMarigold · 29/08/2015 16:25

Do they have weekend pants too?

Lightbulbon · 29/08/2015 16:26

DS only ever had grey ones so I never had to pair them!

Surely life's too short to spend it pairing socks?
