AIBU?
The 13%

Apparently we are losing our identity to immigrants. It's the massive figure of 13%. Now, the biggest bugbear I have with this is that my Mum came from South Africa in 1949. Just when the Afrikaans came into power and decided my Mum and her family where the wrong colour. Thank God Britain gave my family a home. God knows where I would have ended up without the UK. ( I heard this crap from my North east born, never been anywhere else £100,000 per year manager).

Me too, Bunbaker. Mine are from Russia and Poland, but it all ended the same in that period of history.
When there are conversations about which "class" people belong to, I never know what to say ("umm... maybe nouveau riche????")
But although 13% is nothing, about 8 years ago, it was 9%, so I do get that there is a jump. I don't consider this a bad thing, though.

I'm a mongrel. And proud of it. So bits of my family were peasants in 1250 in England and bits were unscrupulous twisters in 1300 and bits were prob 19 century Jewish Russian immigrants fleeing pogroms and bits were French fleeing religious oppression and some were bloody minded celts ( and still are) and there's all sorts. And the family is spread on most continents. It's great. Cheap holidays. Diff food.

the UK has always been a mongrel nation, in fact Eddie Izzard did a TV series called just that.
Thats why we are one of the least racist countries in the world, despite that the Daily Fail would like us all to be out their stoning Johnny Foreigner as he passes our doors.
There have been influxes of foreign nationals at key points, the last one being the 50's and 60's, and there are always moaners, but we change, we move on and "new" becomes "normal".
As a woman married to a man who is British by birth but Jamaican by blood, and the mother of a mixed race child, I tend to ignore idiots like this. Their ignorant rants are of no consequence to me. Oh and as an aside I just bet he says to any friends who are foreign "Oh but not you mate, you do XYZ, so thats ok!" which is actually more offensive when you think about it. H has had that several times and has left behind several confused people who cant work out what they said wrong.....

Oh yes all you "feminists" will have so much fun when the west is turned into islamic states! All of you that have daughters, think about that before you go on your pc rampage.
Really hoping that was ironic.
As the only other alternative is that you are on glue :o

It's an absolute myth that this country is a mongrel nation. Even if you're going to claim that the Norman invasion changed the ethnicity of the country at large (which it didn't, nor did the Romans) then the population of this country has remained fairly static for almost 1000 years in terms of ethnic make up. We've had small waves of immigration but nothing in the slightest bit comparable to the last 20 years. Some people seem to think we have always had high levels of immigration, but it's very much a recent thing.
I suppose it depends where you're coming from if you think it's a bad thing. If you think the reformation, the civil war which propelled new ideas about democracy into the world, the enlightenment, emancipation of women and gay people, a developed legal system and democracy are not good things or you refuse to believe that they have anything to do with British culture I don't suppose you'd think there was anything about the British identity worth saving.
I think there is a huge amount of arrogance from some people who think the fruits we've reaped from these benefits are just there and always will be, who see no need to protect the culture that nurtured these sort events and movements because they can't see the link between a culture and the way of life those who have a particular culture end up having.
I think some people may get a shock a few years down the line....
