Women only train carriages? really????

So, i quite liked Jeremy Corbyn as a runner for opposition leadership. Down to earth, gritty etc...

Then he has the idea of women only train carriages to avoid sexual harrassment? What next? Women not allowed in pubs in case we have our sensitivities hurt hearing the odd F word?

Its a brilliant idea, why waste all our energies on trying to change attitudes, just keep the poor loves in their own safe little carriages. Will they be painted pink with little make up mirrors on the back of the seats?

Don't stop there - we can abolish sexual harrasment in the workplace by having women only offices. Of course certain jobs have a predominantly male workforce so women are going to have to step down from those career choices and stick to something more feminine instead....

Foot. Shot. Self. himself!

I am against segregation, be it for Race, Religion or Sexuality. Women need to be empowered, not isolated.

To throw another perspective into the mix, in the UAE where I live, there is a women only carriage on all trains (although woman can and do choose to sit in the mixed carriages, and have to when with their other half). Obviously this is partly for cultural/religious reasons - some Muslim ladies prefer to travel in the women only carriages. But then, so do I. This is half because the women only carriage is less crowded, more 'fragrant', friendlier and quieter. But half because some of the men here can be pretty creepy - not in a touchy shouty way but just the ardent STARING at you. They're not harassing you or doing anything illegal, but they stare you down. I don't think they mean to be intimidating because many of them are young uneducated migrant workers who have never seen a western woman (or any woman not fully covered) and are just curious. But it does make me feel uncomfortable.

Until this changes, I welcome the opportunity to use women only carriages.

And by the way, I do actually find the women only carriages here quite 'empowering'. It's great to be in comfort will the men sweat in their section, and if a man does try to sneak into the womens section he gets collectively yelled at which is heartening to see here. Also, I think some women here wouldn't travel alone at all if it wasn't for the women only carriages.

But it's a completely different context here, I guess.
