Her arms just look way too thin, the article is not the greatest photos but a quick google makes her look even thinner.

Are you saying that your marathon friend didn't have to body of an elite runner?
In what way did she not??

suzannefollowmyvan · 22/08/2015 12:08

To be elite in running you need to be exceptional in terms of VO2 max and running economy.
without that you are dead in the water

It is possible to have the physique of an elite runner but still be average in terms of VO2 max and running economy ?

SlaggyIsland · 22/08/2015 12:08

suzannne you misunderstand me. I was saying I wouldn't shy away from describing an overweight person as such any more than I would an underweight person, as I prefer being factual to using euphemisms such as "curves".

MNetter15 · 22/08/2015 12:10

I genuinely hate discussing and criticising anyone's body but there's something very odd about this. She has lost a significant amount of weight, looks seriously underweight (I really can't see how anyone can deny that, just like an overweight person is blatantly overweight) and is dressing in a way that is, IMO, purposely putting it all on display.

Either she is genuinely ill with an eating disorder OR just wanted head lines. She had pretty much disappeared from the celebrity headlines the past few years and the public had lost interest.

Roussette · 22/08/2015 12:14

Only ballet dancers are allowed to have that kind of body? If it is natural, yes. Ballet dancers have a body like they do for a reason, and the punishing schedule they have contributes to it, it is their work. Cheryl's 'work' isn't to be an athlete or a ballet dancer.

I think those photos from Pollys sum it up. In the recent photo she has a lollipop head, her head looks like the width of her shoulders! She looks unnatural.

PollysHoliday · 22/08/2015 12:15

These ladies, from the 1940s perhaps, look like normal young women to me.

To my eyes Cheryl looks very much thinner than them.

To think Cheryl Fernandez-Versini is way to thin.
SheGotAllDaMoves · 22/08/2015 12:16

I've never heard any dancer saying it's good and healthy to be so thin. Just that they have to for their profession.

DB has been very open about it. Which is very refreshing.

SheGotAllDaMoves · 22/08/2015 12:17

And Cheryl is hardly a paragon of healthy lifestyle.

She smokes, drinks like a fish.

Lurkedforever1 · 22/08/2015 12:18

Agree with suzzanne.
I actually appear thinner than usual at the moment and I imagine if I posted photos of me currently compared to normal I would be jumped on as having gone from too skinny to skeletal. (Which I'm not) When in actual fact an injury means I have less muscle and more fat than when I am exercising to what I call a decent level. So in actual fact I'm conforming more at the moment to the general consensus of what our societies rather warped view deems acceptable in terms of fat levels, even though I appear further from it. Same in mid to late pregnancy and early post birth, ignoring bump and boobs, my actual measurements in inches were less and I looked thinner, despite my actual body fat being higher because for practical reasons the intense exercise I enjoy had to go and therefore lots of muscle did. However habit means that even doing what is low amounts of exercise for me, I maintain more muscle than most would doing the same low level because I work them subconsciously through habit. And I'm far from being abnormal.
Plus with ballet, without knowing much I bet a lot of the ones that don't make it top level still get careers in it, or in other types of dance. Anyone who does ballet to a half decent hobby level can pick up street dance etc quickly, let alone someone who dropped out en route to being a pro.

howtorebuild · 22/08/2015 12:20

I haven't read the whole thread. I understand Cheryl is hypermobile. If she has hypermobiliy syndrome there are various conditions that go with it, that make digestion a struggle.

Roussette · 22/08/2015 12:21

Normal people being lean is just not on because it makes the fat people feel bad.

I really don't like this statement at all.

I've been too thin. I've been too fat. My opinion is based on the fact Cheryl is too thin for her frame and she is on prime time telly and has a very very big following of young impressionable girls. I'm not jealous of her in the slightest because I imagine she has issues or an eating disorder because no one can actually want to look so thin surely...

She's a beautiful woman and looks so much better with just a bit more on her frame.

suzannefollowmyvan · 22/08/2015 12:22

If someone is lean, how do you decide if that particular body fat level is 'natural' for them?

body fat isn't fixed like height or eye colour, it's something that you can adjust according to personal preference by adjusting food intake and activity level / type.

If I eat lots and am sedentary I will 'naturally' become fat.
If I eat less and am very active my body fat level will 'naturally' drop?

suzannefollowmyvan · 22/08/2015 12:24

normal
too fat
too thin
all somewhat subjective

PollysHoliday · 22/08/2015 12:35

Suzanne you wrote about being able to easily achieve the appearance of an elite athlete yourself. My marathon friend couldn't come close to achieving the appearance of a professional marathon runner despite following the recommended training and diet programme.

My friend's figure resembles the 1940s beauty pageant line up. They would look overweight next to Cheryl if she is being held up as normal.

suzannefollowmyvan · 22/08/2015 12:41

Different body types are suitable for different sports according to biomechanics and muscle fiber types, my point is that you can look elite even if you can't actually perform at that level

Suspect your friends had a predominance of fast twitch lower body mus?cle?

Lurkedforever1 · 22/08/2015 12:46

howto what about hyper mobility gives you digestive issues? Because no hcp or other expert has ever assumed there's any link for us, although none have ever hinted at us having digestive issues at all, so not sure why it's likely for cheryl.
The only possible link is that exercise that strengthens the joints support is of huge benefit, so I suppose if she's hyper mobile that might well explain the training routine, but not digestion.

howtorebuild · 22/08/2015 12:50

Sorry to hear you have such poor health care professionals in your life.

Lurkedforever1 · 22/08/2015 12:51

pollys that's body type though. I could follow an international rugby players routine and I'd still never look like one or be one regardless of natural talent. And at lower level in anything it doesn't matter anyway, it's only when the stakes get high you need the full package.

tobysmum77 · 22/08/2015 12:51

I don't think she looks fine at all. The photos from the front are ok, it's the one from the back Sad .

Anorexia kills people faster than obesity and is extremely dangerous.

I am Shock about what people consider normal if this is fine. Yes normal people have got fatter but celebs haven't and most are the thin side of normal. As they say the camera puts on 10lbs.

I have a bmi of 21, if I lost a stone I would be underweight. That's a lot more than a stone.

howtorebuild · 22/08/2015 12:54

www.nhs.uk/conditions/gastroparesis/Pages/Introduction.aspx

Gastroparesis is mistaken for anorexia and is a known associated condition to hms.

bigbuttons · 22/08/2015 13:01

yes, she is underweight. She has the lollipop head look going on now. Iirc she has always had weight issues.

Pickedmypoison · 22/08/2015 13:02

I think the reason her body looks very childlike and undernourished is not just because she is very slim but because she has no curves ie no waist or hips.

I am slim and petite but curvy as in I go in and out.

Some people are just naturally small and thin. I don't think she looks that unhealthy especially her arms and face. It's just her clothes hang off her due to her lack of hips/bum.

Pickedmypoison · 22/08/2015 13:05

Also some famous women are celebrated for their 'curves' eg Kim Kardashian but their body shape is surgically enhanced and not natural at all.

So women can't win really.

bigbuttons · 22/08/2015 13:06

I have no curves. I am flat chested, body pretty much goes straight up and down. I have no waist etc etc. I don't look thin like her though. I am toned ,I exercise, I also watch what I eat. I am slim I am not thin.
Having no curves does not automatically make you thin. In earlier pictures of her she does indeed have curves. This is clearly not her 'natural' body weight.
Naturally thin people do not the have the lollipop head look either. People who starve themselves do.

PollysHoliday · 22/08/2015 13:08

Will it work this time???
These ladies from the 1940s. They are in a beauty pageant so i assume they feel that they look okay.
