To hate having workmen in the house?

SamVJ888 · 17/08/2015 15:33

Currently having a new kitchen and have workmen in the house as a result, I hate it! I have quite a responsible job and have no problem in making small talk under normal circumstances but as soon as someone comes into my house I loose the ability to speak. I actually feel like it's not my house I feel so uncomfortable. I tried to convince my mum to stay at my house for me but she wouldn't Hmm Very unfair!!!
Can't wait for them to leave!!!!!

Yanbu i hate it too!

Felyne · 17/08/2015 16:19

I can't stand it either. I hate trying to carry on as normal, use the toilet or eat my lunch etc when strangers are in my house. Conversely the idea of going out and leaving them to it, well I've seen too many TV shows about dodgy people to ever trust them alone!

hotCocolepew · 17/08/2015 16:25

I hate ittoo. I'm havin plumbers in tomorrow for 4 or 5 days to repipe my heating. I have no idea how they are going to do it either Confused. If they start moving furniture they will probably be a foot of dog hair lurking behind it Blush

Im leaving my mobile nnumber and clearing off to my mums around the corner. Its really stressing me out Hmm

Gymbob · 17/08/2015 16:28

yep, I hate it too. I don't feel like I can even fart in private. I had an extension done so they were here for months. always got the odd comment from them, mostly well meant, but wanted to tell them to fuck off and MYOB.

GrizzlebertGrumbledink · 17/08/2015 16:28

YANBU. I hate it, I feel so awkward. I thought it was just because as a 16 year old my parents hired the creepiest builder to do our downstairs bathroom, he tried to tickle me on a couple of occasions and called me fascinating Confused. I hated it so much I arranged to stay at a friends every evening after school until my parents were home from work

OldBloodCallsToOldBlood · 17/08/2015 16:30

I can't cope with it to the point that I'll move heaven and earth to make sure any workmen are here when DH is off work, so I can go out or hide out of the way.

I've not been able to get out of having a repairman here this week, when it's just me and DS. It should only be for an hour, but I'm DREADING it. I don't understand small talk and my home is very much my sanctuary.

Cockbollocks · 17/08/2015 16:30

YANBU, I hate it. I like to be slovenly during the day and they interrupt my laziness!!!

hotCocolepew · 17/08/2015 16:33

DH had actually booked this week off but had to go away to work for two weeks Sad.

Delilahfandango · 17/08/2015 16:37

No not unreasonable, I hate it as well. But from the other perspective, my DH works in people's houses sometimes and he doesn't much like it either! So it's awkward for all concerned really!

gerbo · 17/08/2015 16:39

YANBU. We are just coming to the end of three months work and I'm a saturation point. It's other people in your space. Even looking at my (lovely) builder now gives me the rage! And it's the endless questions about how t do this or that, when really I don't care. I'm not a micro-manager. Just want them to get on with it!

YA def NBU.

limitedperiodonly · 17/08/2015 16:40

No one likes it. Once I thought I'd take the opportunity to catch up with some things on the Sky+ that DH can't be bothered with.

But then I realised that the raunch-fest that was Spartacus Blood and Sandals was embarrassing all of us Wink.

MagpieCursedTea · 17/08/2015 17:28

One of my cats hates workmen so much that she stayed out in the rain just to avoid the one that was in our house the other day. The poor thing was soaked when she came in, I had to wrap her in a big towel and give her lots of cuddles and treats to appease my guilt make her feel better.

SamVJ888 · 17/08/2015 17:28

I'm so glad I'm not alone. My mums one of those people who can talk to anyone so she just doesn't understand me! They've left now for the day but back tomorrow. I've just been really cheeky and booked dd in to get her hair cut on Wednesday so I can get out of the house for a while and asked my mum to cover for me for a bit. God I'm pathetic I'm 40 years old for gods sake!!

SamVJ888 My cat is the opposite of yours and loves workmen or any strangers. After they've left I have to calm him down because he starts bouncing off the walls. He would welcome burglars. The only good thing is that they might get so annoyed with him interfering with their work they'd leave before taking much.

Most people don't mind him and some positively love him like the insurance assessor dressed all in black who left covered in white hairs and smiling after he clung to her lap while she was talking to me.

I mostly shut him away, especially from the poor man who came to do some work in the bathroom who was obviously terrified of cats but too embarrassed to say.

It took a while before it dawned on me and then I felt really sorry for him.

I hate it as well. I'm funny about who comes into my house.

jellyjiggles · 17/08/2015 20:31

I also hate the tea making thing. When do you ask? How often? Do you provide biscuits? If your having lunch do you feed them? God it's so bloody awkward

morelikeguidelines · 17/08/2015 20:33

I absolutely loathe it.

Glad I am not alone as dh thinks I am mad.

CatMilkMan · 17/08/2015 20:35

YANBU Dp mocks me mercilessly because whenever we have people in the house doing work I turn in to a different person.
I don't know why but I want them to like me, I offered to make smoothies and lunch for some poor British Gas man.

hotCocolepew · 17/08/2015 20:35

DH can't understand why I hate it, Im quite a chatty persin usually. It just makes me uncomfortable, I never know what to do.
Ive left a tray with tea, coffee and biscuits on it , they can help themselves.

hotCocolepew · 17/08/2015 20:36

Smoothies Grin

googoodolly · 17/08/2015 20:37

I can't stand it! I feel so awkard carrying on as normal and I just can't relax because I think they'll judge me for whatever I'm doing! Blush

CatMilkMan · 17/08/2015 20:41

I gave him options.

Totality22 · 17/08/2015 21:20

We had a lot of work done in a previous place (complete electrical rewire, all new central heating and a new kitchen) so I took the cat and went to my folks for the worst of it.
