To miss the days when people were just 'thirsty'?!

What's all this shit with, 'hydrating'? It's called drinking fucking water!

Whenever I hear someone claiming to be 'dehydrated', I want to reach for my revolver. No, dear, you're not dehydrated, you're just thirsty. It won't hurt you to wait twenty minutes for a drink.

Advanced capitalism, combined with nanny-statism seems to have fostered a nation of adult-babies who can't got five minutes without a snack, needing a piss, or a plastic bottle to suck on. It truly does my head in.

I can't remember the last time I sat through a film or a play without multiple audience members nipping out at least once during the show. Yes, I do appreciate that SOME people suffer incontinence, or might have needed a shot of insulin but, come on, not on this scale!

The absolute ridiculousness of this thread is very entertaining.

I am compelled to grab some popcorn, but fear I may then become thirsty, want some water, and subsequently be attacked by some random sip hater...

Cotto · 14/08/2015 20:46

You must sip passive aggressively though Callme Grin

SquirrelledAway · 14/08/2015 20:47

Yeah, great post BetrandRussell, there is no evidence at all about water intake requirements. I guess the research done by the World Health Organisation, US Military, US Food and Nutrition Board, and various occupational medicine practitioners and physicians doesn't exist.

And WHO made up that stuff about fluid loss of 1% of body weight impairs thermoregulation and thirst occurs at this level of dehydration.

Okaaaay...

GrumpyOldBiddy2 · 14/08/2015 21:04

Maybe WHO are sponsored by Evian?

CaptainHolt · 14/08/2015 21:41

The prefix 'hydra/hydro/hydr' does mean water, not sure why you're bringing cats into it. Is it because you are mad?

('cat' in catastrophe is from the Greek kata. Isn't language fun!)

Charis1 · 14/08/2015 21:52

because claiming water hydrates you because "hydrates" starts with "hydr" IS completely mad, as mad as saying catastrophes are all caused by cats.

Charis

Are you the fruterian from Notting Hill?

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 14/08/2015 22:05

water hydrates living creatures because hydration is what happens when a person consumes water or other liquids or a plant is watered etc.

not because of what the word for "water" is in any given language (which nobody claimed to be a true statement only you made it up)

hth Charis

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 14/08/2015 22:08

I am still waiting for charis to come back and tell us how drinking water can be unhealthy.

CaptainHolt · 14/08/2015 22:11

That's what hydration means. It's what the word means. I don't know how else to say it.

ThursdayLast · 14/08/2015 22:14

I'm imagining CaptHolt has something of a headache from banging her head against her computer Grin

ZingDramaQueenOfSheeba · 14/08/2015 22:15

CaptainHolt

not sure how else it can be said. I'm waiting for Charis to invent a new word maybe?Grin

DurhamDurham · 14/08/2015 22:21

It is a dirty, noisy, inconvenient, wastes every body's time, unhygienic, causes litter, environmentally damaging, unhealthy, irritating, demanding, passive aggressive, entitled, bloody nuisance to everyone

Drinking water is all of the above??? Blimey I'd hate to see cope with something really unpleasant if drinking water irritates you this much.

Cotto · 14/08/2015 22:27

"Are you the fruitarian from Notting hill" Zing Grin GrinGrin That made me snort !

"So these carrots...

"Have been murdered, yes"

"Murdered? poor carrots, how beastly"

I cant buy carrots without DS coming out with this!

Dear Charis et al, your intolerance and arbitrary judgements are astounding.

I have to drink 4L of water a day in order to boost my blood volume and make up for my malfunctioning veins. It is not because I've been taken in by water bottling plants or by some big developed world conspiracy.

If I dont drink that much, my blood pressure plummets to dangerously low levels, and my body goes into distress. Distress is a polite way of saying that I start sweating all over but especially from my face, neck, chest and scalp, my heart goes tachycardic, then I uncontrollably vomit, evacuate my bowels, wet myself, and if I haven't died of embarrassment by then, i lose consciousness.

So don't call me a 'suckler', or imply we're all infantile inferior human beings who are on some kind of instant gratification binge. It's rude and inaccurate. If you banned me from drinking water the result would indeed be "dirty, noisy, inconvenient, wastes every body's time, unhygienic, causes litter, environmentally damaging, unhealthy, irritating, demanding,... And a bloody nuisance to everyone"

But don't let that stop the vitriol.

And before anyone whines that im not being fair and 'of course they don't mean people lke me', well, you do. You get that much into judging everyone and anyone who doesn't have the same way of living as you, then you do indeed judge disabled or ill people. You can't separate us out, as we don't tend to come with labels and doctors notes scrawled across our faces. Sorry, rant over.

Whoever upthread asked about the difference between constant sipping and drinking large amounts in one go- DS1 has a lot of issues with constipation, and subsequently to that, his bladder. We are always trying to get him to drink more water because if his intake dips he gets constipated very quickly (as a side note, DS2 drinks much the same amount but has no such issues - their physical differences mean they have far different water requirements!).

We were told that frequent drinking/sipping would really help him have a high enough fluid intake to prevent the constipation and help heal his bowel (distended and damaged nerve endings). BUT - for his bladder to work as efficiently aspossjble and to heal (it was distended) he needed to have 200ml of water in one go 3 or 4 times a day. So there are benefits to both.

I know that for myself i don't drink enough water unless i really focus on it. When i do focus on it i feel more energetic, i lose weight, my skin looks and feels better and i don't suffer from the occasional kidney stones. If i have a bottle/glass on hand and sip frequently during the day i find it much easier.

sherazade · 15/08/2015 21:48

As a teacher I find it verrrrry annoying when parents over worry about their children becoming 'dehydrated' and sometime even bring in extra drinks or special water bottles that they want me to encourage their child to drink from because they are so worried. The children each have their own labelled school cup which is washed daily by my TA and they have free access to water so it is very rarely an issue - if a child has been running around a lot in hot weather and looks flustered I will also remind them to have a drink. Ironically it is the worriers' kids that tend to drink the most and if they're disruptiing a lesson to go and get a drink or just want to mess about I put a stop to it. I don't remember water being such an issue when I was at school!

Charis1 · 15/08/2015 22:16

I have to drink 4L of water a day in order to boost my blood volume how would water boost your blood volume?

MakeItACider · 15/08/2015 22:16

Well Sherazade, my DS needs water, and i had to go to the extent of getting documentation from the hospital saying he needs to drink a certain amount of water during the day to be listened to -I guess i was seen as one of those annoying parents -, and even with that i still KNOW he doesn't (own bottles) and nothing i say to the teachers helps. They all promise that they will get him to drink, but none of them have. You might find it 'annoying' but my son's recovery period was set back by massive amount by teachers with your attitude.

Charis1 · 15/08/2015 23:17

google is your friend Charis but it wouldn't though, would it?

noeffingidea · 15/08/2015 23:20

charis why don't you just admit you haven't got a clue?

CaptainHolt · 15/08/2015 23:33

Have you never heard of someone getting high blood pressure because they have too much salt? Seriously? How on earth can you not link up hydration (do you want the definition again?) and homeostasis with electrolyte balance and blood volume?

BertrandRussell · 16/08/2015 00:19

"Have you never heard of someone getting high blood pressure because they have too much salt? Seriously? How on earth can you not link up hydration (do you want the definition again?) and homeostasis with electrolyte balance and blood volume?"

Please tell me I have misread this and you don't think that high blood pressure is due to not drinking enough water.........
