to think there's nothing wrong with hoops on buttered toast for lunch?

It's not great, wholesome nutritious food is it. But it's nice, and comforting, and the weather's shit outside and they like it! And it's hardly a bucket of KFC.

Well, DH disagrees, and has just had a huff at me on the phone because I'm 'feeding the children crap all the time' Hmm

He's been on a health kick for the past month - homemade raw muesli for breakfast, the works. This has prompted a few discussions about the family's eating habits as a whole recently and he feels we could all do better. I agreed, and we've been reigning in the sugar, adding more veg etc.

But apparently these devil-hoops and the shepherd's pie I made for dinner last night are just a couple of examples of how I'm not really listening to his concerns. I don't really understand how a plate of homemade shepherd's pie and a pile of fresh veg doesn't constitute as at the very least wholesome food, but maybe I'm dead wrong.

So AIBU in thinking a can of spaghetti hoops on some buttered toast is the food of Gods?, along with a varied and healthy diet (aside from the plainly unhealthy shepherd's pie Confused), is perfectly fine, and that he needs to unbunch his Y-fronts?

You're amazing hibble. I'm in awe.

noeffingidea · 14/08/2015 10:53

The thing that's wrong with hoops on toast is that it's hoops, not long spaghetti. Hoops are horrible.
Apart from that, to me it's alright for a once a week meal, similar to chicken nuggets or Mcdonalds. One bad meal out of 21 won't hurt.
Shepherds pie is fine. So is beans on toast.

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 14/08/2015 10:55

I love scrambled egg on toast -sometimes white, sometimes wholemeal. But it is definitely not a reasonable substitute for hoops on toast.

I suspect if you are starting to analyse your nutrient intake to the point of replacing occasional hoops on toast in an otherwise healthy diet with something nutritionally better for you you've lost the plot slightly.

SalemSaberhagen · 14/08/2015 10:56

What cake substitute do your children have on their birthday hibble?

trinitybleu · 14/08/2015 11:04

TTWK I'm about 200 posts late, but your joke re alphabetti spaghetti made me Smile ... my kinda humour Grin

foolonthehill · 14/08/2015 11:15

I am splitting my sides at the "unreasonableness of white versus wholemeal bread further upthread!!!!!

here is a link to show just how insignificant the nutritional difference is....[https://www.google.co.uk/#q=nutritional+value+of+whole+wheat+bread+vs+white+bread]]

unless you have bread for practically every meal (and even then the filling will have more impact) it's hardly going to make a difference .at all[

trinitybleu · 14/08/2015 11:26

Hoops are full of fat? Eh?? And they're not sugary either. Some people here are bonkers.

Hulababy · 14/08/2015 11:32

He's been on a health kick for the past month

There in lies your problem, especially when they are newly converted!

limitedperiodonly · 14/08/2015 11:37

Omelette made with the white on a naked rice cake is probably the safest of meals.

I eat it all the time. It does get quite expensive to call in a specialist toxic waste disposal team to safely dispose of the yolks, but I think it's worth it.

Hulababy · 14/08/2015 11:38

EVERY singe person I know who has done these obsessive food and health kicks, especially all this no sugar and/or no carbs stuff, have not managed to keep it up. They talk the talk, yet I see alcohol I see chocolate, bread, etc - all creeping back in!

Nothing worse than an obsessive when it comes to sucking all the pleasure out of eating and drinking!

Especially as all these fads change so often.

Moderation is key - for everything!

Hulababy · 14/08/2015 11:47

yes the term 'eating clean' has passed his lips more than a few times a day. Must mean I'm eating dirty.

I rather eat dirty and enjoy the pleasure of eating!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 14/08/2015 11:52

"sdt it is still an unhealthy meal, and the op asked for opinions on this specific meal, and not their whole diet."

I was commenting on the general themes of the thread, not just the OP, hibble.

greenhill · 14/08/2015 12:32

Yes, after 200+ posts, the thread has turned into a discussion, not just of the OP, but food in general.

Eating shouldn't be a palaver, full of oneupmanship: that way madness lies...

We all have our treat foods that can be extra yummy and give us a happy boost: whether it's an egg custard tart, smoked salmon, garlic mushrooms on toast, olives with feta or just hoops on toast. Or raw muesli, but I'm not sure the pleasure is in the eating, more the preparation and perceived healthiness of it.

Each meal is a snapshot, not the entire photo album. I really wish people wouldn't post their meals on FB, a mixed grill with extra chips may be delicious to eat at the time, but it's not photogenic

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 14/08/2015 12:34

I don't know if I want garlic mushrooms on toast, or spaghetti hoops on toast for my lunch now, greenhill. Sad Not that I have either mushrooms or spaghetti hoops in the house at the moment - so it would have to be toast on toast. Grin

VulcanWoman · 14/08/2015 12:50

Spaghetti hoops are an abomination to spaghetti/pasta. They should be called tomato sauce hoops.

greenhill · 14/08/2015 12:52

Or a toast sandwich sdtg it could be as good as a crisp sandwich, but I doubt it!

I agree about food photos on FB! Just pointless. I have only once been tempted to photograph my dessert and cocktail when they were really pretty (mum took me to one of the restaurants on the Shard... yum) but I still refrained from posting it online - I just couldn't do it :o

On my news feed I do sometimes see photos of what far flung adventurous food people's children are eating - kind of a photographic version of Loud Parenting I guess.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 14/08/2015 12:56

Right - enough of this - I am off to make casserole for supper tonight. Beef, bacon and red wine casserole, with mashed potato.

AIBU to be pissed off that it is cold enough in Scotland to justify casserole for dinner??

greenhill · 14/08/2015 12:56

But you wouldn't be able to eat the fresh pasta without any sauce on it vulcan it would just taste of flour and salt. You need oil or a sauce to make it tasty.

DeandraReynolds · 14/08/2015 12:57

My kids just had a Greggs sausage roll, a corn on the cob and a jam donut Grin

Iamralphwiggum · 14/08/2015 12:59

You sound like my friend at school hibble. I remember when we were 16 she told me she had only ever had 1 mcdonalds and never had a chupa chub lolly. Half of my life on I still remember the moment she told me as I felt so sorry for her!

greenhill · 14/08/2015 13:00

Ooh fuzzpig what did you eat and drink there? Was it ambrosial unicorns with a cocktail of mermaids tears to justify the price for a special treat? Grin

WorraLiberty · 14/08/2015 13:02

TTWK "Just don't feed them alphabetti spaghetti...it could spell disaster!"
