I get that actors don't want to be filmed and think its bad when people use mobiles in live theatre.
But its hardly 'mortifying' as he told his 'fans'
He wants to live in the real world, he may then understand the true meaning of mortifying.

Refreshing to see on the Same news item that a Beatles tribute band actively encourage people to film their show.

I'd be mortified if I said 'I'd love to shag Benedict Cumberbatch" in a quiet voice and he said "nah, you're alright love" quietly back.

I totally agree with him. But I think he should actually stop the play and have the people doing it picked out and removed. Annoying for rest of the audience but you'd only have to do it a few times to get the message across.

I think he would've stopped the play had there not been two interruptions caused by technical difficulties.
He certainly didn't want to be filmed when he came out to apologise to the audience for the interruptions. Now that would've been mortifying for those filming...

What's more annoying is that he refered to I phones as 'funny little electronic things'

Possibly he was trying to diffuse the situation with some not very funny humour.

The consensus seems to be he isn't a "nob", was perfectly reasonable to say what he did and the op doesn't understand the definition of "mortified".

I agree the mortifying bit is because his fans are most probably the ones doing it, distracting his colleagues and himself. I would use the word 'mortified' if, for example, I had to apologise because of the bad behaviour of my children. He may have felt the need to apologise to the people on stage with him who have to do an incredibly long play vwith a red light in their face the whole time!

Hello, I'm back! I've been reading all the posts and have come to the conclusion that I'm mortified and an idiot over the meaning of the word mortified
For the record, I have never used the word to a parent. I just thought I felt mortified but I obviously felt devastated.
I apologise for this whole thread and for being so dim I have got a degree
