sugar sandwiches are a fine after meal treat

A few times I've mentioned having sugar sandwiches after a (healthy) meal people look at me a bit strange. One even gasped.

I can't be the only one doing this right?

Apparently we had these when I was little. My great grandparents gave them to us. I don't remember as would have been too young.

Can't imagine liking or wanting them now, but it certainly isn't something odd. Old fashioned maybe.

DipsoHippo · 10/08/2015 08:58

Sugar sandwiches are delish! My gran used to give them to us as a treat, she never had biscuits/cake in the house so we got a slice of batch loaf, real butter and a sprinkle of sugar. Love it! Haven't had one in ages.

hackmum · 10/08/2015 08:58

It does sound a bit weird to me - I could understand it (just) as an afternoon tea kind of thing, but a strange thing to have after an evening meal.

Salmotrutta · 10/08/2015 08:59

I used to have crisp sandwiches as a guilty secret pleasure sometimes too Ego!

afterthought2 · 10/08/2015 08:59

Sugar sandwiches are delicious. Even better is toasting one side of a slice of bread, turning it over, adding butter and sugar and then placing sugar side up under the grill. Yum Yum

RattieofCatan · 10/08/2015 09:02

I didn't do this but a friend's Mum introduced me to weetabix smeared with butter and sugar on top. I loved it as a kid! I even had some (with oatibix) the other day Blush

Presumably you have butter? Or the sugar would just drop off

Sounds a bit rank but no different to eating cake I suppose. But then I don't really get eating cake after dinner, I don't usually leave room for anything substantial afterwards!

ILiveOnABuildsite · 10/08/2015 09:05

My granddad used to make them for me, particularly in winter (grew up in Canada) when it was cold and we'd been outside for a while. That or a maple butter sandwich with a hot drink really picks you up sometimes I think. My cousin who lives in France says her children were given chocolate sandwiches as an afternoon snack, they are made of a piece of baguette cut in half and a chocolate bar put in the middle as the filling. Not sure if there is butter too though. Apparently that's a pretty normal treat for kids in France.

Yabu calling them sandwiches... Sugar butties is what they are - a staple of my 1970's diet - not sure if eat one now though

CanIBeTimmythedog · 10/08/2015 09:07

When my mum was growing up they apparently ate bread with trifle or ice cream. Lots of mouths to feed and not much money I guess.
I've had sugar sandwiches. Not too awful but I can think of nicer treats.
We also used to have vanilla ice cream with cocoa powder/water drizzled on top. It was vile. I still hate chocolate flavoured ice cream now!

BabyGanoush · 10/08/2015 09:07

Not had one for ages.

In Holland people have sugar sprinkles (99% sugar, with a bit of colour/flavouring) on bread for breakfast :)

Or chocolate sprinkles

And why not!

Such sugar paranoia these days

FarFromAnyRoad · 10/08/2015 09:08

There are few things that aren't improved by a half inch layer of ice cold Lurpak butter - but I wouldn't put sugar on top! Such a pointless waste of badness. If you're going to be bad slather some fresh strawberry jam or set honey on top!
My mum used to give us raw egg whipped up in whole milk, cream and sugar claiming it was good for us. It was just uncooked custard really. The war generation were a bit odd about this sort of thing!

Salmotrutta · 10/08/2015 09:09

To be honest I'm sure there are far worse foodstuffs than a sugar sandwich.

If it was a choice between a sugar sandwich and tripe/liver/mussels/squid/for instance the sugar sandwich would win hands down.

Fishwives · 10/08/2015 09:11

I think it's the 'having it after a meal' thing that makes people think it's odd, when it's traditionally been a 'cheap, quick and filling' snack or meal replacement for poor people. It seems like an odd option for pudding.

The mere idea (the sugar crunching on the butter) makes me gag.

Salmotrutta · 10/08/2015 09:12

FarFrom - my mum used to force a tablespoon of cod liver oil down us every day. Obviously very good for you but God it was rank.

MrsPeabody · 10/08/2015 09:12

My nana used to make this as a special treat for the grandchildren, when child minding us. Can you imagine the threads that would create on here now? Grin

As mentioned it was a way of making food go further. If we were lucky we got sugar and apple sandwiches.

Delicious!

lilacblossomtime · 10/08/2015 09:12

Yum I like it too and agree it's no worse for you than cake.

It's not shocking really, people do eat too much sugar and carbs. No different from a doughnut or slice of cake or biscuits. Carbs and fat together, a very addictive combination!

I wouldn't have it myself, and I certainly wouldn't call it a treat, food shouldn't be a treat.

I don't care what other people eat though.

Oh God Salmo - my Gran did this once. Only once, because it took her days to get the projectile vomit off her expensive shoes! Grin
