to think it tedious that vegetarians never reciprocate the favour

Now, I´m not mightily peed off at this, and I really dont want to offend any veg´s here but I have quite a few veg friends and over the years you invite ppl over for meals and in turn get invited etc. I always cater for their vegetarian lifestyle choice (because thats what it is, its not an allergy, thats different), but they never cater for mine. This is just something I´ve been musing about for awhile now, nothing too serious. But I really like my meat and think its unfair that vegetarians expect meat eaters to pander to them but most of them never even dream of doing meat eaters the same favour!

Eh? You want vegetarians to cook meat for you?
Yeah this won't kick off at all! Hmm

Methe · 08/08/2015 12:28

Do you only eat meat?

PosterEh · 08/08/2015 12:29

I'm not a vegetarian but I think you are being ridiculous. Do you have an ethical problem with vegetarian food? No? Well it's not the same then is it.

MrsTedCrilly · 08/08/2015 12:29

Totally agree! My sis in law has been vegetarian since she was a little girl but cooks a mean roast and lots of different meats. She doesn't care as long as she is not eating it.

EastMidsMummy · 08/08/2015 12:30

There's a massive and obvious difference.

You dietary choice means you eat all of the food groups your vegetarian hosts will serve you. Their dietary choice means that they don't.

ginmakesitallok · 08/08/2015 12:31

But vegetarians aren't vegetarians because they REALLY like veg. A vegetarian can't eat meat, you CAN eat veg. Not the same thing at all.

My veggie DP regularly cooks meat for me and the kids though

aprilanne · 08/08/2015 12:31

are you being serious .you dont understand why people who dont like eating dead animals wont just cook it for you once in a while .eating veg offends no one killing animals for meat offends a load of folk .if i went to a veggy pals house no way would i expect her to give up her beliefs for me .how stupid .thats like saying my friend is jewish but i like pork so why cant i have a bacon buttie .

Marshy · 08/08/2015 12:31

PosterEh has it.

Unless you are unable to eat a meal without meat I think YABU.

I am vegetarian and would never expect meat eaters to choose not to eat meat on my account but I wouldn't cook it for them.

I don't want to buy meat and feed into paying the meat industry. I don't want to handle or cook meat, which I personally find disgusting, at home. Plus it is nicer to cook a meal that everybody can enjoy and caters to everyone's needs. If I cooked guests a meal with meat in I wouldn't be able to eat it.

That said I wouldn't object to guests bringing their own meat dish if they really are unable to go without for one meal in the same way I will always offer to bring a vegetarian dish if I'm being catered for at s non-vegetarian's house. I certainly don't expect my friends/ family to cater for me with meat free dishes (although they all do and that is much appreciated) and if anybody felt unable or unwilling to cook a veggie dish I would bring my own food.

Spinningplates10 · 08/08/2015 12:32

If you resent catering for them, which you clearly do, then don't bloody invite them!

If invited to a vegetarians home and can't stand the thought of ONE meal without meat then decline. It's not difficult at all really.

DancingDinosaur · 08/08/2015 12:33
Hmm
SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 08/08/2015 12:35

I'm not a vegetarian, but I don't eat meat because I don't like it. So no, I wouldn't cook meat for someone because it smells absolutely vile. If you do eat it you probably don't notice, but I promise you, it stinks.

cariadlet · 08/08/2015 12:36

YABVU.

Your veggie friends aren't refusing to cook your favourite food, because it's something that they don't like the taste of. They're refusing to cook something, because they feel that to do so would be funding and condoning a cruel industry.

If your friends were veggie and you were a cannibal (assuming that was legal), would you expect them to serve up a homosapien steak?

If your friends were Muslim or Jewish would you expect them to serve you roast pig?

There's a huge difference between ethical beliefs and food preferences.

Mulligrubs · 08/08/2015 12:37

Any veggies who have cooked for me have cooked meat - MIL for example doesn't eat meat or fish but she will happily cook meat if she is doing dinner which is lovely. Obviously when we do dinner we do her a vegetarian meal, either we all eat that or I make a similar meal to what we have.

If she felt strongly about it and didn't want to cook meat for us it wouldn't bother me at all. For years I was vegan - to be polite I'd cook a meat meal for guests but I can understand why some vegans or vegetarians don't like or want to do that, so YABU

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 08/08/2015 12:37

Also, why do people who really like meat refer to as 'liking my meat'? It makes it sound like they're eating their own legs or something.

meglet · 08/08/2015 12:38

Yabu.

Goldbluemagenta · 08/08/2015 12:38

Great post OP, very funny, lots of serious bites so far.

How about if you were to take your own pre cooked half a cow in a tupperware pot to serve at the table therefore not offending said host who is unable to cater to your whims in the correct manner.

Perfectlypurple · 08/08/2015 12:38

Bollocks. I am a vegetarian and cook meat for my family and guests, so thats not never is it?

Hermi0ne · 08/08/2015 12:39

You just dont get where Im coming from. Just forget it.

firesidechat · 08/08/2015 12:39

I sort of get what you mean. My daughter's partner is a vegetarian, but is also a fantastic cook and does a very good roast. However that is very much his choice to do that and some vegetarians wouldn't/couldn't do the same and why should they.

Birdsgottafly · 08/08/2015 12:39

I have to cook meat for my DD.

If she ever leaves home (she has SN), then I wouldn't want meat cooked in my pans, or the new cooker that I'd buy.

You can't cook meat, poultry etc without there being a smell, residue, fat etc.

It's like when I invite my Muslim friend over and cook her halal meat, and then when I go to hers she won't cook me bacon.... Confused

Seriously, OP. One meal without meat? Perhaps vet potential friends first next time so you can weed out the vege ones and save yourself the hassle.

BoysiesBack · 08/08/2015 12:42

YABU. Many vegetarians are for ethical reasons, why should they compromise their beliefs because you can't manage one meal without meat.

Both me & DH are veggie, however the DCs are not. I will not cook meat for them, turns my stomach, but DH does so they have it 3/4 times a week when he cooks. They survive the other nights...
