I am sat here, a mere 6 or so feet away from my colleague and all I hear ALL DAY LONG is their stomach rumbling and gurgling!

Said colleague is for want of a more pleasant word, large, but eats less than I do. Yet all I hear all day is the rumblings and gurglings of their stomach and it makes me feel sick! I actually shudder when I hear it SadShock

AIBU to feel this reaction?!

Borborygmus. Next time you hear it, you can say, Oh, poor chap -just have a spot of borborygmus -see, there s even a medical name for it. Cant be helped.

Since I got colitis my stomach is really loud. It makes me giggle and even laugh. My husband loves it when he makes me tea on a Saturday morning as its really loud then and it means the weekend has started.

I'm sorry I don't really understand how a noise you can't have any control of upsets you.

Mind we find farts hilarious in this house.

SilverBirchWithout · 06/08/2015 13:19

I can't help thinking you don't like this colleague much and this is why the noises offend you so much. You certainly sound pretty judgemental about their size.

Skiptonlass · 06/08/2015 13:21

I have no advice, but the technical word for rumbling of the stomach is borborygmi (singular borborygmus.)

You're welcome :)

Oh bummer! X posted with Dorothy ... :)

Hehe.. :)

op I think the key to this is that you are acutely embarrassed by making such a noise. For the first few days you heard it, you probably cringed inside a little for the person making the noise - assuming they would feel the same way you do. After a few days of cringing you start to embed the idea further and further in your head that this noise is bad and embarrassing and cringeworthy. Further days of reinforcement leave you where you are which is having a violent nauseous reaction to the noise.

As a solution I would recommend a CBT approach. Next time the gurgling starts really really LISTEN to it. Hear it and experience it and realise that it isn't actually hurting you...its just a noise. I find it helps to tell yourself over and over "this isn't hurting me" while listening intently to the noise.

If you do this even a few times you will hopefully find your mind accepting that it is just a noise and that you don't need a full on physiological response to hearing it.

I too have IBS and my stomach can make some very unusual noises. Normally whilst I'm at work. I just giggle to myself and shush my stomach which makes my work colleagues laugh. Not much I can do about it and it can be embarrassing. Just put some earphones in if it annoys you so much. I presume you're as quiet as a mouse at all times then? Hmm

My colleague had weight loss surgery. Her stomach sounds like it was fitted with a mechanical waste disposal unit after she's eaten. Its part of what makes her her.

meh OP.

Have a Biscuit for your tum Wink.

I used to sit next to someone who would grind their teeth.
Like clicking their jaw type sound (and they smell to boot)
Sorry but I could not stand it.
I used to put earphones in but eventually I had to have a chat with the facilities guy and ask him to move me.
All day every day - just NO.

I feel your pain OP.

Well you can't help it annoying you but I think some discreet earplugs are the way to go. I had a colleague who had an audible gurgling sound coming from her stomach but she was aware of it and explained that she'd had gastric bypass surgery and this was one of several side effects she experienced. She regretted her bypass surgery and did not recommend it for anyone else, for what it's worth.
