Colleague's STOMACH!

StomachRumblingsDriveMeMad · 05/08/2015 15:14

I am sat here, a mere 6 or so feet away from my colleague and all I hear ALL DAY LONG is their stomach rumbling and gurgling!

Said colleague is for want of a more pleasant word, large, but eats less than I do. Yet all I hear all day is the rumblings and gurglings of their stomach and it makes me feel sick! I actually shudder when I hear it SadShock

AIBU to feel this reaction?!

OP posts:
Yourface · 05/08/2015 19:49

I'd punch her in the face. That should stop it and make them think twice.

Just kiddin.' I fecking hate all repetitive noises...nasal breathing, loud eating/slurping, humming. I really hate when people chew gum loudly for hours and worse, if they make that weird clicking noise with it. Sniffing...oh yeah. My husband has hay fever, it's a wonder he's still got his testicles!

You have my sympathies.

Yourface · 05/08/2015 19:51

It's ok if I make repetitive noises. I should add. That's fine. Not annoying to me. Nor should it be too anyone else! Wink

teatowel · 05/08/2015 19:55

I have an ileostomy. It can make the most horrendous noises. I can't tell you how embarrassing it is. I stay clear of many situations. Reading things like this doesn't help!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 05/08/2015 20:17

Stomach - saying something to her isn't the only way you could be making her feel bad - I hope you aren't glaring/rolling your eyes/otherwise demonstrating your disgust. You probably aren't.

Littleorangecat · 05/08/2015 20:18

YABVU!! The best bet is for you to move desks and not to mention it.
I have crohns and my stomach can make very loud unexpected noises, there's bugger all I can do about it. It can sound like a coffee percolator or even loud high pitched squeaks. It's really embarrassing especially in a queit office, and can cause me quite a bit of distress. It's because my bowels are ulcerated, inflamed and bleeding inside as they are being attacked by my immune system.
Your colleague will probably be more than well aware of the noise but if caused by a medical issue its highly unlikely they can do anything about it.
Don't be unreasonable OP!

How do know it's an extreme reaction and causing great upset?

Sparklingbrook · 05/08/2015 21:44

She's upset enough to start a thread in AIBU and namechange to do it Alice. Plus it makes her feel sick which is a very extreme reaction to stomach rumbling IMO.

letseatgrandma · 05/08/2015 21:51

This is a horrible OP to read. I have suffered from a terrible gurgling, growling stomach for nearly 20 years. The GPs I have seen just muttered something about IBS and just sniggered at me. I have tried endless things-it's horribly embarrasssing. I hope beyond hope that people don't hear and get bothered by it. Your post suggests otherwise.

TheHappinessTrap · 05/08/2015 21:51

Funny thread. I never can tell which way these will go. Op, if you'd payed an hour earlier or in a different day this might have gone differently. Hey Ho. I'm not thin not over weight and my stomach only grumbles when I'm hungry. Also, I find some noises repulsive. Two of my colleagues constantly clear their throats and sometimes I really have to force my focus elsewhere. If it bugs you it bugs you. No big deal. Five ways of gaining more control over your focus. Or create an alternative story about the noises to one that's more palatable.

DesertIslander · 05/08/2015 22:04

YANBU. I wouldn't like this either

tisfortitus · 05/08/2015 22:12

I used to sit in front of a man who yawned repetitively. It was the jaw click at the end which nearly finished me off. I still have a visceral reaction thinking about it. Thank GOD there was a reorganisation. It was horrible.

Jen1610 · 05/08/2015 22:16

Yes yabu!

My stomach can be quite vocal because I have a gluten intolerance and IBS. Thing is usually when it's making other people 'feel sick' I do feel uncomfortable, bloated, in pain or physically sick.

AlisonBlunderland · 05/08/2015 22:22

My gut is extremely talkative. First thing in the morning, it's very chatty

helensburgh · 06/08/2015 00:07

Since I had my gallbladder removed I've been the same. Awful gurgling and grumbling noises.
If you were my colleague I'd get you completely!

DragonsCanHop · 06/08/2015 00:14

I can't eat at work horrible dental problems

I understand some will/are annoyed by my grumbly stomach.

I probably piss my family off as well but they love me.

elephantoverthehill · 06/08/2015 00:37

This happens to me a lot. I am told by colleagues to eat something. But no the problem is because I have eaten something.

The tiny (both in stature and waste size) lady I sit next to (who I count as a friend and is lovely) has a lot of digestive noises going on - I totally don't mind it but she says she feels embarrassed by them.

This is totally your problem, you can feel however you want to but you cannot say anything to this woman as it would be utterly rude to do so plus there is likely nothing she can do about it.

SirChenjin · 06/08/2015 08:48

How do know it's an extreme reaction and causing great upset

She literally shudders at the sound, it makes her feel sick, she's started a thread about it and she's name changed. Oh, and she knows she's BU. That's a pretty extreme reaction to the sound of a rumbling stomach. Now that she understands why it can happen, perhaps that will help.

It happens to me too - I seem to have inherited my DMs noisy stomach. Exams and quiet rooms are extremely stressful - I remember once it started in the middle of a Uni final and I could barely concentrate on the paper, it was so embarrassing. I was sweating and the tears started - it was awful, with the giggling and turned heads from the people around me. DD (15) now has the same thing, but she also has the accompanying delight of severe IBS - to the extent that she hasn't been able to stay in many classes this year and had to take her exams in solitude.

Yeah, rumbly tummies are hilarious - a real joy to live with. Soz it bothers you OP - hope you manage to get over it.

IPokeBadgers · 06/08/2015 10:51

My husband has IBS and the sounds that come from his stomach are by turns both amusing and horrifying. There are days when his stomach lets out a sudden growl so loud that I have literally jumped...and other days when i half expect the creature from Alien to come bursting out of his stomach a la John Hurt in the original film....

Stormtreader · 06/08/2015 11:48

I think the rumbler deserves a little bit of sympathy - sounds like they are dieting hard because they are "for want of a more pleasant word, large", and doing it near someone who is "always nibbling something or other".
You can bet my tummy would be rumbling all day too!

I do also sympathise with the OP, since I have misophonia and sit near key-janglers and throat-clearers as well - earphones with music loud enough to just take the edge off are your friend Grin

t3rr3gl35 · 06/08/2015 12:40

Totally unreasonable, OP. I have coeliac disease, have had a bowel resection and my gut makes horrendous noises. I spent the first few years after the resection being horribly embarrassed by the thundering growls, but then I grew a pair and stood up to somebody like you. Faced with not being here at all or having a noisy gut, I'll take the latter and you can learn some bloody manners!

SilverBirchWithout · 06/08/2015 12:49

Could you asked to be moved somewhere else? Your colleague should not be forced to sit next to someone who is so unpleasant.

UnsolvedMystery · 06/08/2015 12:57

What would you like your colleague to do about this?
Perhaps you could ask them to stop doing this? Confused

This is your problem.
