Bbc headline Princess Kate passes PADI In Mustique is not news

Or is it that I am so proud of my own daughter for working lots of shifts in student bars whilst studying for end of year exams, to pay for her PADI in UK waters, as well as passing the theory, supporting small Britsh businesses, seems slightly worthier? There is bigger news in the world this weekend.

Those stats are outrageous! Watch people say she had to learn the job. As others have said, she was nearly 30 when she got married and had never had a job, apart from as Williams girlfriend. She could have done some 'learning'then!

ComposHatComesBack · 06/08/2015 19:40

In 2012, when she was only briefly pregnant and could only have had max 6 weeks morning sickness max she did 111.

As ego rightly points out engagements are often crammed into together in one day, so they regularly clock up four or five very short engagements.

The number of working days is more informative. Even the 'hardest working' British Royal (Prince Charles) only clocked up 189 working days in the 2013, which clocks in at an arduous 3 and a bit days a week. Prince William managed an arduous 47 days in the year after he left the RAF.

tarashill · 06/08/2015 19:55

Yes and really lets not pretend these engagements are physically tiring. I mean how hard can it be to get driven to a function, shake a few hands, say a few words (prepared by someone else) and maybe get to eat a nice meal. Everything laid out, not much effort required, then back in the car. But that's what they call work. Some of them can hardly manage that.

EponasWildDaughter · 06/08/2015 19:57
Shock

Goodness. Put like that it IS an eye opener.

I've never looked at any of the published engagement diaries for any of the royals, but if you'd asked me to guess i'd have said that they would have all clocked up a regular 4 days a week of engagements/'do good'ing. At least for appearances sake!

Oh yes. A proportion of those will also be borderline if they are work or leisure: attending sporting events, film premieres, award ceremonies etc. are things many people would love to do.

What's wrong with Seaton Carew? Snobby cow

Yes its like the kind of things you'd love to do on your day off but can't afford to. I remember the gruelling tour of Australia, we'd all hate to have to that wouldn't we.

The problem is, I'm not remotely interested in what the Royal Family are doing and what duties they are performing. They don't have job descriptions, they just are who they are. They aren't lazy, because there aren't any set expectations of what they should be doing. The less of taxpayers' money they waste going to functions where they require security, the better, in my opinion. I know my life is infinitely more free and happy than their lives must be. I can't think of anything more boring than endless trips to watch sport, talking to tiresome people, eating food you don't like, not being able to relax or wear the same outfit more than once, not being allowed to express an opinion, not being able to do anything without knowing someone is trying to catch you out being lazy, ugly, spotty or rude about someone. They CAN'T safely do anything meaningful because someone will see fit to complain they aren't qualified to do it, or comment on it, or take an interest in it, or someone will complain that they are being political. They are trapped in a hideous, gilded cage where they aren't allowed to make their lives meaningful. People say they dislike Prince Charles - yet, as has been pointed out, he actually takes an interest in things (for which he is told off) and does something (for which he is told off).

Well said, rabbitstew. And even if they do try to do something worthwhile, they get criticised for it - in this very thread, William has been criticised for taking a job as an air ambulance pilot that someone else could have taken and then having the insensitivity to give his wages to charity, when there are people who don't have wages. Or something.

And yes, I would hate to do a tour of Australia where I had to do what I was told, be where I was told, talk to who I was told, smile when I was expected to, wear different clothes every day, and where the slightest slip I made would be excitedly beamed around the world so that everyone could laugh at me. I fail to see why anyone would genuinely think they would have LIKED to do that.

But nobody forced her into this life, she picked it. Charles and William are slightly different, but other minor royals could give it all up, get a proper job and live comparatively normals lives a la Peter Philips. At some level they choose this and see it better than the alternative.

tarashill · 06/08/2015 21:35

Round and round a and round and round, tiresome isn't it. Btw they aren't trapped in a gilded cage, they can opt out anytime they want. Somehow I don't think they want to.
I'm sure Australia wasn't all official duties, a very small part of their day probably, they'll have got to loads of private stuff. Small price to pay for all that beautiful sunshine.

xavierfondue · 06/08/2015 21:47

applauds Rabbitstew and flexes the fingers ready for next time....

BoffinMum · 08/08/2015 16:32

Do they not think that banging on about protecting elephants, and sending out Press Releases about diving in Mustique, is a smidgen insensitive given that back in the UK we have food bank issues and the like?

I suppose they expect poor people do their diving in Skegness or something. Wink
