To ask where I can send my 57p?

drspouse · 31/07/2015 20:47

According to the Mirror if all the asylum seekers currently in Calais came into the UK and (highly unlikely) never paid any tax, it would cost each of us 57p.
To save a group of people from some of the most unimaginable horrors in their home countries, I'm more than happy to pay that.
So, where do I sign to pay up (and make it clear I'm happy for them to officially seek asylum and have their claims verified)?

EH? Ignore me.

JassyRadlett · 31/07/2015 22:29

They could just seek asylum in France and then as an EU citizen travel to UK at a later date but don't think any of them fancy their chances with French Immigration probably because mostly they are not legit asylum seekers and the UK is a soft touch.

Could it also have something to do with the fact that there is currently a 3-4 month delay on people being even able to lodge an asylum claim in France?

redbinneo · 31/07/2015 22:29

"The most mentioned one I've seen has been language."
Oh dear, the most mentioned I've seen has been money.

longfingernails · 31/07/2015 22:29

redbinneo I would sponsor someone who swam here from Africa.

The link in the OP wasn't clickable, so I've put it here.

Happy36 · 31/07/2015 22:32

Excellent post! Can you tweet / facebook / e-mail The Mirror to ask the same?

redbinneo · 31/07/2015 22:32

"Migrants have cited a number of reasons why they wish to seek asylum in the UK rather than France. "
Does that they include they know a soft touch when they see one.

longfingernails · 31/07/2015 22:32

Even the Australian Labor party has now accepted the wisdom of turning back the boats

Beyond How about #57p?

I've never been shared on FB (except by work people who have to share work things)!

(In case you were interested, the answer to my above question was, yes DS had, but only a little bit and he'd woken himself up. My bath now running, then I'm off to bed.)

I am someone who only has to hear the word "Kindertransport" and my throat gets a lump. I only hope I've helped someone.

Angie thanks for that, silly Ipad.

Oh dear, the most mentioned I've seen has been money.

That's interesting - can you share sources?

Mine have been admittedly mostly from TV news reports, with clips of migrants responding to the question of why they want to go to the UK, despite the fact that state support for asylum seekers is lower than in France.

HellRunner · 31/07/2015 22:34

No I think Genuine Asylum seekers should seek asylum in the first safe country they get too (which I think is the supposed protocol anyway). These people have already gone through many countries to get here

If you want to give your 57p to them fair play to you but I hope this crappy government closes our borders as this country is a lot smaller then most of its EU neighbours and can not cope.

Good for your GF Swallowed - must just be great to decide you want to be somewhere and get there. Would love to do that but oh yeah nasty old Immigration would stop me.

longfingernails · 31/07/2015 22:36

I suspect the only thing I have in common with most people on this thread is that I want Jeremy Corbyn to be Labour Leader.

JassyRadlett · 31/07/2015 22:36

Here's an interesting article, though. Lots out there.

Out of interest, why 'oh dear'? Does it upset or sadden you when people read or watch different things from your choices?

swallowed · 31/07/2015 22:37

redbinneo it was to escape poverty, injustice and probable death.

Why? I truly have no idea what your point is except to post goady inflammatory crap

redbinneo · 31/07/2015 22:38

Oh dear Jessy, TV is not a reliable source, it tends to be selective and supportive of the editorial policy of the station involved.
I get my information from real people down the pub.

JassyRadlett · 31/07/2015 22:40

Ah. How many of those real people down the pub have been in Calais and talked to the people there about their reasons for not stopping in France?

I'd tend to trust the Syrian bloke at Calais who answered the question 'why not stay in France' to have a better idea of his motives than the person down your local. Unless that person is a Syrian asylum seeker?

You may want to check out the difference between broadcasters and print media about rules around impartiality, bias and editorial policy in Britain.

MadamArcatiAgain · 31/07/2015 22:41

I am sorry but all this is bollocks. It is not just a question of handing out a few £s a week in benefits, it is one of capacity.

Have all you do-gooders with your 57ps failed to notice therare thousands of people living on the streets already BECAUSE THERE ARE NOT ENOUGH HOMES.(begs the question -Why haven't you given your 57ps before now and sorted that out?)

So lets think about the numbers.57p from each taxpayer is about £17 million.Given the housing stock is already insufficient, to have a nil effect we would need to build more.
The average 3 bedroom house costs say £250,000, so our £17million would buy us 68 houses -for 5000 people????
So the crux is that the people who will suffer by admitting these migrants is the people who haven't got a home, those at the bottom of the pile.Your 57 p is a kick in the bollocks for them.

I understand now, they want to escape the French.

longfingernails, the ALP have adopted the policy of "turning back the boats" in the last few elections, and lost spectacularly.

It doesn't seem to be much of a vote winner for them.

redbinneo · 31/07/2015 22:44

Oh dear Jassy, some people are so easy.
Good night.

miaowmiaowhiss · 31/07/2015 22:45

Homelessness in the UK definitely isn't as simple as 'there aren't enough homes'! What we do have is a complete imbalance in house prices and rent, coupled with other more complex issues to do with social support -> homelessness. It really isn't that we've run out of space, like so many people seem to think on these threads...

swallowed · 31/07/2015 22:46

red are you sure you wouldn't feel more comfortable on another forum? We quite like informed debate on MN and that whole sulky teenager on a windup thing is quite dull.

Night night.

JassyRadlett · 31/07/2015 22:47

How very grown up. Thanks awfully for proving my earlier point about people who aren't really interested in debating issues.

Maybe you didn't understand the posts, though? The bit where you got confused about the difference between 'migrants' and 'people down the pub' was a bit of a glaring one.

You may wish to invest in a thesaurus in the morning?
