To ask where I can send my 57p?

According to the Mirror if all the asylum seekers currently in Calais came into the UK and (highly unlikely) never paid any tax, it would cost each of us 57p.
To save a group of people from some of the most unimaginable horrors in their home countries, I'm more than happy to pay that.
So, where do I sign to pay up (and make it clear I'm happy for them to officially seek asylum and have their claims verified)?

Could you please explain why an illegal is more deserving of your (wasted) 57p than buying some tea for a legal immigrant with high skills, high earning potential and who will add to Britain?

I'm good, ta.

Garlick · 31/07/2015 21:38

Hello, OP posted a link to the Refugee Council:
www.refugeecouncil.org.uk/donate

Theresaflyinmyhouse · 31/07/2015 21:39

Er, long, I didn't say they contribute more, I said don't assume they can't contribute anything. Which is what you're saying.

I'm very happy to be a lefty. I love humans and don't believe that anyone should suffer because of where they were born.

Hellotherehowareyoudoing · 31/07/2015 21:40

Thanks garlick my eyes clearly aren't working. Donated.

redbinneo · 31/07/2015 21:41

How was that 57p calculated? I notice that the sum was for the migrants currently in Calais. How about those that arrive tomorrow and the day after, and the day after that....?

longfingernails · 31/07/2015 21:42

Fantasyland What is so bad about France?

I suppose that you could argue that the socialist policies of Hollande are causing such misery and economic malaise that there is no alternative.

Kayden · 31/07/2015 21:42

I'm not an immigrant but I'm struggling to continue working whilst living with chronic health problems. I'd love a cup of cha, thanks. Wink It's only by accident of birth that I happened to be born in this country or else I'd be long dead due to my ill health.

BeyondTheWall · 31/07/2015 21:43

Donated £1.14 for me and DH

To ask where I can send my 57p?
swallowed · 31/07/2015 21:44

You can't have a cup of tea Kayden no. They are only for legal immigrants like me

PurpleSwift · 31/07/2015 21:44

Where are you expecting them to contribute! We currently have almost 800,000 people actively seeking work in this country already. Where are these jobs they can get?

Samcro · 31/07/2015 21:46

Oh ffs op
Are you that dense

Hellotherehowareyoudoing · 31/07/2015 21:47

No need to be rude samcro, anonymous forum or not...

DadfromUncle · 31/07/2015 21:48

It's a nice idea, but what about the next 1000?, and the next, and the next - it's extremely appealing to do this and solve the short term problem, but end up creating a worse one in the long term.

I am not unsympathetic, they are people just like I am, but I think it would be a bad thing to give people false hope or pretend 57p will solve the main problem.

Hassled · 31/07/2015 21:48

Interesting relevant article in the Guardian here: "Europe’s population stands at 740 million, so housing an additional 1 million refugees is possible without major social impact – and it’s been done before (after the Vietnam war)" - also makes the point that out of the 200,000 migrants who have arrived in Europe this year, only 3,000 have made their way to Calais. It's a European problem, not a British problem.

redbinneo · 31/07/2015 21:48

Samcro
Yes she is, and a few more here besides.

longfingernails · 31/07/2015 21:49

Hellotherehowareyoudoing It's better being rude and honest than supporting criminals (the very first act of an illegal on this soil, namely stepping upon it without going through the proper procedures, is a criminal one).

Fantasyland · 31/07/2015 21:49

Long finger if you were a person needing to flee your home country would you not try and get somewhere you thought you would have a better chance of a life and not just go to the next country?

What would you do?

Kayden · 31/07/2015 21:50

Samcro Pot, meet kettle.

Samcro · 31/07/2015 21:50

Oh come on the op is being dense, if she thinks. 57p will help
Bet the op and others will never be affected if thousands of sometimes violent immigrants come here

redbinneo · 31/07/2015 21:51

Fantasyland
An appropriate name.
I would go to the nearest country to offer a safe haven.
I would not travel a thousand miles through France to maximize my benefits.

Hellotherehowareyoudoing · 31/07/2015 21:55

longfingernails I don't agree, I'm afraid, that being rude is ever the best option. It is easy to presume entitlement simply due to being born in the kind of progressive country where, in fact, posts like the OP's represent a bigger sense of 'what is right' that has got us to where we are today as a nation. Being precociously aware of 'the right thing to do' has played a large part throughout our history in the UK, and is actually one of the (many) reasons we have prospered - because we are an attractive prospect as a result.

ghostyslovesheep · 31/07/2015 21:55

I wasn't aware the UK was the only EU country to pay benefits and have a welfare system

Justanotherlurker · 31/07/2015 21:56

Well your only paying 57p for 5000 more migrants so it's ignoring the current situation whilst reducing it into a sentimental argument and ignoring the social argument, you know the ones you find unpalatable.

Still, I wouldn't expect anything less from the daily fail, oh sorry it's the equivilent but on the left that is the mirror.

longfingernails · 31/07/2015 21:56

Hellotherehowareyoudoing I would much rather someone was rude and right than nice and wrong.

QuintShhhhhh · 31/07/2015 21:56

Never mind why they want to leave France, what the heck do they want in Britain? Who could possibly have told them this is the country of milk and honey? That was in the old days, surely?

How did they get through all of Europe and to Calais?

Some of the refugees have had enough in the North of Norway, they say life is after all better in Somalia, and can they please get sent home....
