AIBU to want to shoot HIM with a bow and arrow, track HIM for 2 days, then kill him, skin him and cut his head off????? To see if he then thinks that I 'didn't know I was doing anything wrong'?

He's a vile human and someone will fuck him up.

NoNameDame · 01/08/2015 15:20

There are far worse things happening in Zimbabwe but the only thing people get riled up about is a cute animal Hmm

Google ghe human rights atrocities and Zimbabwe regime

This isn't front page news on Zimbabwe as they have much worse problems to deal with

Roseotto · 01/08/2015 15:37

The professional hunter involved has only been in that line of work since his family farm was appropriated by the Mugabe regime.
However, I don't think (as some seem to) that to be outraged about this lion killing and appalled by human rights abuses are mutually exclusive. Can't we condemn both?

fancyanotherfez · 01/08/2015 15:43

no name there are far worse things happening in the world, never mind Zimbabwe, I don't think anyone is unaware of the appalling human rights record of the Mugabe regime. There are permanent campaigns by Amnesty about them. Nothing is done. Shall we go in and impose democracy? That's worked well in the past. Zimbabeans have to sort out Zimbabwe in their own way. The lion hunting is something the we can do something about. The people killing the wildlife in Africa are Westerners. We have a chance of changing their actions and hopefully making it socially unacceptable in a generation.

NoNameDame · 01/08/2015 15:47

I'm sure people disapprove of both, but I find it disheartening that the thing that prompts the big mass outrage is the lion rather than everything else. There's a lot less starting petitions, trying to get pictures to go viral about the more important issues, eg the Mugabe regime.

I find that sad and wish people would sort their priorities out, I think it's really disingenuous as people are trying to come across really caring but only care about(or act on/ get involved in) the 'attractive causes'

NoNameDame · 01/08/2015 15:48

But of a lazy attitude there, we can't do anything so let's not try. I don't think people will solve all the worlds problems but hate people painting themselves as really caring when they're not

Andrewofgg · 01/08/2015 15:54

What would any of us do if we were his patient and had always found his work excellent and good value and his care professional and satisfactory?

Just wondering. I'd stay with him.

blacktreaclecat · 01/08/2015 15:56

I wish he wasn't a dentist, we get enough bad press

Thancred · 01/08/2015 16:22

So would I Andrew, while I may not agree with his actions I'd be of the opinion that his private life is his own so long as it doesn't affect his work.

I'm baffled by the level of frothing and also the vile comments directed towards this man and his family. Be angry, be sad, whatever, but to wish his whole life ruined - and by extension, the lives of his wife and children who will also be in hiding and also be facing the effects of financial uncertainty - is ridiculous.

An animal died in dodgy circumstances. It should be investigated and charges laid if criminal wrongdoing is found, that is fair and right. Being morally outraged to the point that you'd wish someone dead and/or ruined is over the top in my opinion. I'm morally opposed to a lot of things but I don't wish people dead because of it.

WhatALoadOfOldBollocks · 01/08/2015 16:25

Personally Andrew I wouldn't support any service provider who I knew had hobbies I found objectionable. I'd vote with my wallet, and judging by his clients who were interviewed I'm not alone. There are plenty of other dentists around after all.

WhatALoadOfOldBollocks · 01/08/2015 16:28

What I meant to add was that if I supported a service provider whose hobbies I objected to, I'd be helping to fund them wouldn't I. I just wouldn't, just as I boycott companied whose policies I object to.

BeckerLleytonnever · 01/08/2015 16:52

Absolutely agree.

However, all this furore about it, why isn't it as horrifying and provokes a reaction like this when someone kills a person?

Its not plastered for days on the news when that happens.

AyeAmarok · 01/08/2015 17:21

How on earth do these 'big game hunters' get a head and skin of a lion through customs at the airport? Confused

Andrewofgg · 01/08/2015 18:10

WhatALoad If you were his patient and this was the first you heard of his hobby - would you change?

I don't care what health-care professionals do in their private life. When I was a child my father was a Labour councillor and my mother was Secretary of the Constituency Labour Party - politics were very, very big in their lives - but our GP was a Conservative councillor in the same town.

WhatALoadOfOldBollocks · 01/08/2015 19:01

"WhatALoad If you were his patient and this was the first you heard of his hobby - would you change?"
Yes, because I would not want my money to help fund his trophy hunting. If he hunted deer/boar/wild game (without gloating over the kills) to eat I could deal with it, but he hunts animals, some of which are on the vulnerable list, so he can have his picture taken over their corpses and feel great for having killed them. He can fuck right off and I would find a dentist with a better moral compass. Of course it could be awkward or costly if I was in the middle of treatment but I'd try and find a way round it. Besides, his surgery is shut for the time being and the way many people have responded to Cecil's death I imagine he'll be making himself scarce for the forseable future. So even patients wanting to stay with him might find it awkward. And don't forget, he was also on probation for having killed a bear outside the allowed zone. Oh, and he had an out of court sexual harrassment settlement against him. He's not exactly an all round good guy is he, and I wouldn't want to help inflate his bank balance.

pigsDOfly · 01/08/2015 19:37

Not sure killing things for fun equates with being a local councillor of either party Andrew.

SabrinnaInUtopia · 01/08/2015 20:15

If you were his patient and this was the first you heard of his hobby - would you change?

Damn right I would. If I can stop my money going towards big game hunting, I will.

Very sad news is that Jericho, Cecil's brother has now also been illegally poached.

I actually want to cry - he was the one protecting Cecil's cubs. Now they will probably die too.

Fucking bastard poachers.

True enough PigsDOfly bit you see what I mean. Professionals are professionals and it's their skill and care which matters. Not but what there aren't some on MN who regard being a Conservative as being the senior partner in a league with the devil.

OK, anybody, if you would change dentist, good luck to you!

pigsDOfly · 02/08/2015 00:51

Yes Andrew there does seems to be a strong dislike of Conservatives on mn, but having lived under a Green party run council and now, due to a recent move, living under a Conservative run council, I know which one I prefer.

nocoolnamesleft · 02/08/2015 01:24

I despise him, but I wouldn't want to kill or torture him. Perhaps a ruling that he could only continue to practice dentistry on lions. Armed only with a toothbrush.

Having to find a new means of employment might keep him a bit too busy to slowly and painfully kill endangered species.

WhatALoadOfOldBollocks · 02/08/2015 10:23

"OK, anybody, if you would change dentist, good luck to you!"
Why would we need luck? Dentists aren't few and far between, and he/she wouldn't be the only one who could do the job, especially if I was only going for minor treatment. Yes it would be inconvenient, but I'd feel better for shunning them. I simply, as I've already stated, not want to help fund anything I felt very uncomfortable about, which could be human, non human or environment related. Some things are harder to avoid, but others are easy, so why would I not vote with my cash over something easy to do. I do the same when I decide which charities to donate to, which supermarkets to use, which products to buy, etc. If I find out something about a company that I hate I'll avoid them when possible (looking at you Tesco and Adsa).

Andrewofgg · 02/08/2015 16:04

Good luck to you is of course not to be taken literally, not that I don't wish you luck . . . perhaps I should have said all the best to you.
