AIBU to want to shoot HIM with a bow and arrow, track HIM for 2 days, then kill him, skin him and cut his head off????? To see if he then thinks that I 'didn't know I was doing anything wrong'?

I heard this on the news, the lion with a name, famous even.

Poor Sudanese asylum seeker who was killed in Calais didnt get a name. Didnt get as much airtime either, just another asylum seeker. The ninth in the last month apparently.

browneyedgirl86 · 29/07/2015 14:00

I hope this pathetic excuse for a man gets whats coming to him. He is vile, cruel and his behaviour makes me ashamed to be human.

Mimigolightly · 29/07/2015 14:03

YANBU - I think anyone who kills or tortures any animal for sport or fun deserves all they they get.

ElkeDagMeisje · 29/07/2015 14:04

Elysian Poor Sudanese asylum seeker who was killed in Calais didnt get a name. Didnt get as much airtime either, just another asylum seeker. The ninth in the last month apparently.

Without meaning to sound barbaric, the Sudanese asylum speaker isn't a member of an endangered species.

Damnautocorrect · 29/07/2015 14:04

There's fewer than 30,000 lions left.
White rhinos, whole other story. There were 4 northern white rhinos in 2006. 20,000 southern white rhinos. So that photo from a conservation point is more alarming

Damnautocorrect · 29/07/2015 14:07

The two aren't comparable.
The asylum seeker made a calculated risk, although he clearly didn't deserve to die. He must have known it was a risk.

Cecil just went 'oh dinner' and got lured, hunted, shot, hunted and shot for existing.

Damnautocorrect · 29/07/2015 14:10

I should clarify that's 30,000 African lions. Asiatic there's thought to be 400-500

ElkeDagMeisje · 29/07/2015 14:16

Another point - this man is a dentist, which funds his hobby. Dentistry is a profession, and he has a professional image to maintain. Since this is the second similar offence he has been accused of, on two different continents, I think it calls into question his judgment.

I also think its quite obvious he knew this lion was part of a study project and was being lured out of the reserve, and is lying. If he maintains his story that he didn't know, he should have made it his business to find out.

I don't want to be racist to Americans, I have American friends, but I cannot sometimes believe the crass way that some of them behave on holiday.

Queenbean · 29/07/2015 14:21

Yes it's disgusting. Of course.

It's also pretty disgusting the things that people on here are writing about him. People would murder him, skin him? How would that make things better? You'd be just as bad, or worse than him.

Everyone is up in arms because it's a cute creature. Do you get this angry when a cow dies? Or a chicken? Or a pig which makes your sausages? Absolutely not.

Totally hypocritical.

TheoriginalLEM · 29/07/2015 14:24

I hope that he at least loses his business, turns to alcohol and ends up on the streets. The smug cunt. Alternatively, torture would be an option but id prefer a long and miserable life for the bastard.

Pointlessfan · 29/07/2015 14:24

I can't bear to hear about this story, it's abhorrent and has almost reduced me to tears. I can't understand why someone would do that to such a magnificent, beautiful creature for sport.

ArmySal · 29/07/2015 14:25

I'm a little squeamish, Queenbean, so I wouldn't personally skin him.

Wouldn't feel pity for him if it happened though, and I don't believe that makes me as bad.

The lion took 40 hours to die after first being shot, fuck all to do with being a cute animal.

Reap what you sow. If you believe me wishing him harm makes me a bad person, then so be it.

TheoriginalLEM · 29/07/2015 14:26

Queenbean - whilst i take your point about eating meat, the fact is that we all, maybe niavely like to believe that the animals raised for our food (especially those of us that only eat free range) have been treated well and died a quick and humane death. Which is not the case with this Lion that was killed for no reason other than to get this pricks rocks off.

TheoriginalLEM · 29/07/2015 14:28

Elysianfields, that is awful about the asylum seeker. I am embarrased to say that i knew nothing about it Blush This is because i only heard about the lion killer on my facebook page.

ElkeDagMeisje · 29/07/2015 14:29

He probably gets off on people making violent comments about him. I hope he loses his business and struggles financially.

He's a shite hunter anyway if he can't spot a collar on his prey or get a clean shot (or clean up the mess caused by his lack of a clean kill).

I'm vegetarian. I'm also against poor slaughter practices in this country, but what is interesting is that the internet makes people aware of the bad behaviour of fools like this man and publicises the plight of endangered species.

MNpostingbot · 29/07/2015 14:31

He's a disgusting individual, but those of you wanting to do the same to him are as bad.

FyreFly · 29/07/2015 14:31

Not that the horrific comments on this thread aren't great Hmm but if you really want to make a difference, the link to the conservationists at Oxford and in Zimbabwe who studied Cecil is here: www.wildcru.org/ - no donation is too small...

80sMum · 29/07/2015 14:31

What I find so unpalatable and incomprehensible is that this man, a presumably well educated professional (a dentist, with his own business) should state that this (torturing and slaughtering wild animals for FUN) is a pursuit that he LOVES!
I just don't understand how any reasonable, normal person could derive pleasure from it.

kali110 · 29/07/2015 14:32

Yes i would get upset if a cow or pig had been shot and left to die in pain for hours.

nowwearefour · 29/07/2015 14:34

I find it abhorrent. I also find it pretty scary that people are more up in arms about this in the US than about the many innocent people killed by gun crimes in that country. With the outrage being the same for humans as for this poor creature something might actually change.

MrsBungle · 29/07/2015 14:37

It's just incomprehensible to me that some people enjoy stalking, hunting, killing, skinning and decapitating any living creature Confused how on earth can that be pleasurable to any sane person? Poor Cecil.

starlight2007 · 29/07/2015 14:40

according to BBC the dental practice is now closed

fancyanotherfez · 29/07/2015 14:41

I also think it is different if you kill a cow to make burgers or kill a lion to make yourself look like the big man, with no care for the natural environment. Cows are bred for eating. That's the way it is. There will still be cows in the 50 years, even if we all started eating beef 24 hours a day. it could be argued that if we all stopped eating meat, however, that the cow would be extinct. If it was being pursued across a pasture and killed with a crossbow, of course most people would have a problem with it. The lion is endangered, which is why it is protected by being on a game reserve. 7 lions will now be dead as a result. What can we say to the Chinese when they are buying White Rhino horns, poaching the Rhino and elephant into oblivion if Westerners are killing them to stick on their wall?

Moopsboopsmum · 29/07/2015 15:09

T.I.A.

StandByYourTesselators · 29/07/2015 15:12

I thought that big game hunting died out with the Victorians, but boy was I wrong. It's huge business, and so many 'hunting tourism' websites flogging their 'Big 5' deals. Big 5 is elephant, buffalo, rhinoceros, leopard and lion. Just heartbreaking.
