AIBU to want to shoot HIM with a bow and arrow, track HIM for 2 days, then kill him, skin him and cut his head off????? To see if he then thinks that I 'didn't know I was doing anything wrong'?

I can't read all the pages because this story has distressed me so much today. I can't condone death threats to him or his family, but I hope that nobody attends his dental practice and that he suffers a loss of his business.

His actions were appalling. 40 hours for the beautiful creature to die. What were they thinking about???? Where is the humanity?

Hopelass · 29/07/2015 15:17

I hate him. I hope he suffers. That story made me feel sick AngryAngryAngry poor beautiful lion.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 29/07/2015 15:34

I wouldn't wish physical to him but I do hope he is extradited to Zimbabwe and prosecuted. Apparently the sentence could be up to 15 years.

It is a despicable thing to do. Not just killing an endangered animal but the awful torture he put it through before it finally died. I don't understand how anyone could get any enjoyment out of that, well, not unless they are a psychopath.

BeautifulLiar · 29/07/2015 15:36

The "Big 5" thing is awful. Sure, I'd expect to pay quite a bit of money to get up close and stroke such animals but to kill them? Just why?

No it doesn't make you a big man, possibly winning a fight against a lion with your bare hands, would, but not this.

pumpkinsweetie · 29/07/2015 16:28

I hope someone finds him, and kills him, in the same way he killed the lion. Hunters are just satanic killers, that get thrills from killing something bigger & better than themselves, maybe because they want to murder, but cannot get away with a human slaying!

ValancyJane · 29/07/2015 16:38

Horrible man. I don't wish death on anyone, but I do really hope he gets jailed for a significant period of time over this. Poor Cecil Sad I had no idea hunting large game animals for 'sport' was still a thing. As for using a bow and arrow and causing a drawn out death, that's the most barbaric part of it all.

A small part of me does wish the lion had the opportunity to fight back, am certain such a 'big man' with his bow and arrow could have handled it hey!!

ajandjjmum · 29/07/2015 16:51

There is no way I would choose a dentist who enjoyed killing anything for relaxation.

I feel sure his business will close down.

Funny how the hunter has become the hunted - wonder how he likes it.

fancyanotherfez · 29/07/2015 17:51

There was someone on the radio dating he has a right to spend his money how he likes, but I hope his patients decide they have a right to spend their money how they want and that they don't want to give it to someone who kills animals for fun.

silkoversatin · 29/07/2015 18:14

I can't believe this stuff still goes on. Wildebeast or Deer is bad enough but Lions ~ FFS!! How microscopic must this mans penis be?

Sazzle41 · 29/07/2015 18:24

Um, Mummymeister Clarence was 'more equal than others' in that he was part of a study and electronically tagged as such and, rather loved, well known and famous. Hopefully the one good thing to come out of this is highlighting such cruel practices. Bow hunting should be outlawed and a lot of those 'shoots' the animals are literally herded/ paraded 20yards away and there is no 'hunt' or 'skill' involved they are just near enough for any unskilled idiot to wound then track if not killed outright.

Dire how we treat our wildlife: and, cruelty to animals is one of first 'flags' re psychopathic traits while we are still on the cruelty aspect. Think about that is what i would say to that man's patients/practice staff/social circle.

geekymommy · 29/07/2015 19:31

This guy reminds me of the sadistic dentist from Little Shop of Horrors. If I found out my dentist enjoyed inflicting pain on animals like this, I'd be looking for a new dentist.

I am an American, and this guy disgusts me, too.

BoreOfWhabylon · 29/07/2015 20:10

Please read about the work of the the Wildlife Conservation Research Unit , who were studying Cecil, and consider supporting them by making a donation, if you can, and sharing the link.

IAmNotAMindReader · 01/08/2015 13:08

I think he does need to be extradited and stand trial. Some news reports say the guides tell a different story to the dentist about the permits. They allege they did have them but for hunting leopard not lion and the elephant he is alleged to have wanted to go after. Not sure if you can get a permit for elephants at all.
Now he is safe on US soil he is now petulanty claiming he did nothing wrong and it was all the guides fault. His previous conviction throws doubt on those claims of him believing everything was above board. Even if he did then, showing no remorse now and still claiming he was right is showing he has no regard whatsoever for conservation laws and believes he is above authority.
Hunting the big game takes no skill. Lions lounge under trees and are that used to vehicles they don't react to them.
70 hours to make a kill after wounding is the mark of a hunter with poor skills and aptitude. Hunters aim for as clean a kill as possible to prevent further suffering to the animal. It's a mark of skill and pride to be able to kill quickly and cleanly. This is the mark of a man akin to a local yob who tortures things for the pleasure of seeing its pain.
Donate to that site, they need the publicity, not this individual. Just goes to show money can't make you a decent human being.

chocolatechip123 · 01/08/2015 13:14

If the lion was a local celeb lion, why didn't the guides know?

IAmNotAMindReader · 01/08/2015 13:18

They won't have been visually monitoring him 24 7 but will have noticed his tracker was outside the area for some time minus the rest of the pride and stationary. After a few days someone will have been sent to investigate. That may have involved quite a large distance to travel. The time starts to add up and then add on time for it to have been picked up in the media.

ribbitTheFrog · 01/08/2015 13:19

Yanbu. Animals should be allowed to live without being hunted.

IAmNotAMindReader · 01/08/2015 13:24

Sorry 5hought you meant the people monitoring g him. During a 70 hour hunt there's no way they missed that collar. Perhaps that made him a more attractive prize. Perhaps the hunter told the guides to carry on regardless. Maybe they were paid extra to continue and are regretting it now they've been caught.
This is why it needs to go to trial those collars aren't easy to miss.

IAmNotAMindReader · 01/08/2015 13:24

stupid fat fingers

Stanky · 01/08/2015 13:33

Hope we get to see some justice for Cecil. I hate to think that the scumbag just gets away with it and carries on shooting animals for fun.

SoleBizzzz · 01/08/2015 13:39

Dentists Wife is a hunter too.

UnGoogleable · 01/08/2015 13:42

This story is atrocious, and fascinating at the same time.

Atrocious for all the obvious reasons. But fascinating because it shows the attention that can be drawn when we name an animal and make him a 'celebrity' (FWIW, I had actually heard of Cecil the Lion before, having seen one of the researchers talking about him at a conference a few years ago where he acknowledged that Cecil's celebrity status made him a target and they all knew it was just a matter of time before this happened).

This kind of thing has gone on for years. This man himself has killed many beautiful, and more endangered animals than Cecil (the White Rhino for example). Indeed, the picture that is doing the rounds of him sitting next to a lion that he has killed isn't even Cecil, it's a different Lion, one he had killed previously. No one cared or noticed when that one was killed.

So this sudden outrage over Cecil is interesting. I think social media has played a huge part, and the press love a story, and a 'celebrity lion' is a great hook.

I think Cecil's death could mark a turning point in conservation. I'm sure it's already generated a huge amount of donations for the Oxford based research project. I hope it can keep up the momentum and really turn this event into a positive outcome.

And if I was running a conservation project, I'd be naming my animals and making celebrities out of them. It may well make them a target for trophy hunters, but it sure as hell shines the spotlight on their cause.

As for the Dentist - I'm sure his life is being very badly affected right now. I don't wish him harm. He too has it in his power to turn this into a good thing. Perhaps he'll see the error of his ways and become a conservationist... he could donate the $50,000 that he would have spent on his next hunt to the research project.

Good could come of this - what a great legacy that could be for Cecil.

pigsDOfly · 01/08/2015 13:47

Christ, 40 hours to die. And this apology for a human being does this for 'fun'?

WhatALoadOfOldBollocks · 01/08/2015 14:28

Apart from everything already mentioned, I find it sad how any woman would want to marry a man who enjoys killing animals for fun, and who then has children with him. This suggests that she thinks what he does is fine, and no doubt the children will be raised to think the same. They're the next generation of warped trophy hunters.

carriebrody · 01/08/2015 14:31

While it is disgusting, I wonder why there is so much outrage about a lion and not about millions of cows, pigs, chickens etc who have horrible lives full of suffering before they die?

chocolatechip123 · 01/08/2015 14:51

I thought that Big Game hunting died out with queen Victoria tbh. So barbaric in this day and age, but then, humans are still knocking seven bells put of each other on the basis if race, religion, gender...
