To not want my name advertised on my coffee cup?

I get that Starbucks thinks it's a nice friendly thing to do, but surely you should be able to opt out if you're a grumpy old woman like me ?

Yesterday when the cashier said 'can I have your name for the cup please?' I said 'I'd rather not'. She was fine with this, took my money and passed the cup on to the barista. I was the only person waiting, but the barista asked my name 'for the cup' again. He insisted that he needed a name 'to avoid confusion', and went on to say 'it's company policy, dear'. Hmm

He decided to call me 'A' on my cup, made my coffee and then handed it to me.

AIBU to not want my (generally mis-spelled, even though it's only 3 letters and I always spell it out) name advertised on my cup? Or should I just amuse myself with made up comedy names?

Yes, I know I can choose to go elsewhere, and often do. I just think it's odd to force someone into a 'customer service experience' that they're not comfortable with.

Laughing with tears here! This needs to go in classics!

PeacockPie · 27/07/2015 20:43

I don't think I can make a clicky link out of this, but if someone else can, this may shed some light on the weirdness of Starbucks spellings.

Howtodrainyourflagon - even though I hate Starbucks coffee I now need to go so that I can tell them my name is Costa (I would prefer Nero but we don't have them here).

I reckon it would be good to use a personal aim or attribute that you would like to attain, perhaps Grace, Harmony, Honour, Charity or Verity.

Haha sticky! Voldemort is my Starbucks name!

Yellowaveo59 · 27/07/2015 21:19

Someone I work with lives Dad's Army and the sketch where they don't want Pike to reveal his name. So now he thinks he is hilarious telling Starbucks his name is Pike.

Twodogsandahooch · 27/07/2015 21:20

I know a Phil who came out with Fill on his cup. Made me smile. I I always give me real name but it is often wrong - do I look like a Geoff?????

Tell them your name is "Stephen with a PH"

morechildrenplease · 27/07/2015 21:32

Not sure why but Sportacus appeals.

appolina · 27/07/2015 21:37

I've never been asked for name in another coffee shop.

AboutTimeIChangedMyNameAgain · 27/07/2015 21:41

Dave.

LongHardStare · 27/07/2015 21:42

Grumpy woman here too. I just say no or shake my head if they ask for a name. If I get asked again, I ignore it.

I don't want to make up a comedy name, I want a cup of coffee for fucks sake.

Customer's always right and all that.

LongHardStare · 27/07/2015 21:44

BTW that 'company policy dear' comment is definitely crap service.

I've complained about crap service in starbucks before and got a free drink voucher on the spot...

mugglingalong · 27/07/2015 21:52

I feel an outing to starbucks with the dc in the holiday is in order. I never usually go there but I think that maybe Harry, Hermione and Luna could go for coffee with Professor McGonagall. I will dare them to keep a straight face!

stripytees · 27/07/2015 21:54

One of my friends has a Facebook friend called Candida. Hmm You could try that next time.

Zebedee74 · 28/07/2015 09:24

Thanks Mumsnetters - you've had me in stitches with your name suggestions. Grin

Am very much looking forward to my next Starbucks trip (and will be listening much harder to the names other people give).

Starbucks name generator

glasgowlass · 30/07/2015 11:19

I have a very simple name. They never spell it correctly. I shall use fake names from now on.
That link from only is brilliant

Pagwatch · 30/07/2015 11:25

As others have said its just to stop people taking the wrong coffee which happens a lot.
People also order coffee and then wander off.
Customers can be dickheads.

I don't work at Starbucks. I rarely use Starbucks but they are the only place to get coffee at 7.00 am on a Sunday when dd is training. The staff are all nice hard working people and have to take lots of shit from snarky wankers who think the world gives a shit what their name is.

MorrisZapp · 30/07/2015 11:33

I have my own cup (primark, two quid) which keeps my drink hot and which servers can't write on. I get 25p off every drink I order with it.

Or don't go there if you hate them? Strange thread really, why spend your money somewhere you hate the staff, company and product.

Zebedee74 · 30/07/2015 14:57

Hmm Morris - I missed the bit where I said I 'hate the staff, company and product'? I believe I said I don't like one of the company's policies, a single member of staff was rude to me and I love the product. Please enlighten me?

God, I hate it too. I have an unusual, difficult to spell name. I tell them my name is Jane.

To be fair, I don't like coffee very much so there's not much point me going into places like Starbucks and queuing for 10 minutes for a cup of tea

whois · 30/07/2015 15:57

Yeah just make up a name. Anna. Bill. Tom. Something easy to spell :-)
