To not want my name advertised on my coffee cup?

I get that Starbucks thinks it's a nice friendly thing to do, but surely you should be able to opt out if you're a grumpy old woman like me ?

Yesterday when the cashier said 'can I have your name for the cup please?' I said 'I'd rather not'. She was fine with this, took my money and passed the cup on to the barista. I was the only person waiting, but the barista asked my name 'for the cup' again. He insisted that he needed a name 'to avoid confusion', and went on to say 'it's company policy, dear'. Hmm

He decided to call me 'A' on my cup, made my coffee and then handed it to me.

AIBU to not want my (generally mis-spelled, even though it's only 3 letters and I always spell it out) name advertised on my cup? Or should I just amuse myself with made up comedy names?

Yes, I know I can choose to go elsewhere, and often do. I just think it's odd to force someone into a 'customer service experience' that they're not comfortable with.

Cark! Grin

Make one up or find somewhere better to drink coffee than Starbucks. Either option wouldn't be difficult Wink

'Bob' said in the tone of Blackadder with the extra pop on the 'b's.

Though in the only Starbucks I go into I've never been asked. I'm disappointed.

OP next time they insist reply with 'the name's Job. Jobs Worth'

Roseformeplease · 27/07/2015 17:52

Tell them your name is Starbucks and, not to worry, it is already on the cup.

How about Tax Payer or Customs & Excise ?

SaveOurBogBrushes · 27/07/2015 18:24

My name (Imogen) got changed to Emergent once so there seems to be nothing stopping you from using a random word...

StregaNona · 27/07/2015 18:27

I make one up each time. It is quite fun. If you go for a really old lady name like Marjorie or something unexpected like Chardonnay they don't know quite where to look.

RunAwayHome · 27/07/2015 18:40

It just saves people taking the wrong drink at the counter - if people refuse to give them a name, then it increases the chances of that happening, and then they have to waste drinks/time by making new ones. It used to happen quite a lot in the busier stores. So just make something up.

If you put a cup sleeve on, it almost always covers up the name (or your hand does), so I doubt you need to worry about people seeing you as you walk down the street. Most people know that is what Starbucks does anyway.

The coffee can be a little weak, but the people who work in mine are friendly, give discounts, have rewards etc, so that in the end it's cheaper than the independents (which I also go to, on some days - I like to vary it!).

Depending on gender

Margaret Thatcher
David Cameron
Gordon Brown
Elizabeth Windsor

There are people around who carry names like that, probably regarding them as a burden!

SquinkiesRule · 27/07/2015 18:44

It's just a way of making sure you don't take someone elses coffeee, whats the big deal?
I just make up a name, Frank, Bob, Mary I don't care. But I've only seen it done in the really busy Starbucks where I'm waiting for drinks along with 5 or 10 other people. I go and sit and they shout out the names at the one we used to go to.

NorksAreMessy · 27/07/2015 18:51

Dave Gorman has a brilliant section where he says he used to say his name was "Caramel Macciato"

Reminds me of this

I use Trevor. They usually do a double take n I've had the odd smirk but I actually like the name so much I am thinking of rolling it out to other areas of my life.

ShuShuFontana · 27/07/2015 19:00

I have been fake naming for years.....I loudly proclaimed my name to be Anastasia Beaverhausen in the Starbucks near Tower Bridge. Server guy said "pardon" I said it again and dd pipes up "but her friends call her Annie"

I had Annie written on my cup :o :o

appolina · 27/07/2015 19:04

I use Katie (not my name) as I don't want to give my real name. Not very imaginative I know

contractor6 · 27/07/2015 20:10

Tell them your is skinny latte. At least they'll spell it right!

Penfold007 · 27/07/2015 20:20

First time I was asked it caught me off-guard so I said Mrs Penfold, DD immediately disowned me!

I don't mind giving Starbucks my name as even though it's a nice, short name and I spell it clearly for them I like to see what they'll translate it to. My favourite was Santa. My name is nothing like Santa.

howtodrainyourflagon · 27/07/2015 20:28

In Starbucks my name is Costa.

BitOutOfPractice · 27/07/2015 20:28

We should all use our MN names then we could give a secret MN nod of approval to other MNers in the queue

SnapesCapes · 27/07/2015 20:30

My Starbucks name is always Thor because I have long blonde hair and love capes. The DCs insist on visiting whenever we walk past and they call themselves Loki and Jarvis. Nobody ever bats an eyelid, except DH, who looks like he wants to vomit with shame every single time.

Nolim · 27/07/2015 20:40

I know an indian guy who for take outs or whatever used to say that his name is Apu.
