Bedroom door - what about yours?

Random, I know. Do you sleep with your door open or closed? I'm sure years ago I used to have it closed, but after getting a cat, kept it open. Would be so weird for me to have it closed now!

How about you? How about your dcs?

Open slightly. Our house has wired in smoke and heat alarms but we live in an earthquake prone country and after the last major quake, we learned that if you sleep in a room with the door closed, the frame buckles and the door cannot be opened.

DH has an axe under the bed just in case one of the boys closes theirs in the night so we can chop through the walls or door to get to them if needed.

Closed for the DCs, ours is open a couple of inches although if the DCs are shut and we can hear DD through her alarm I'm not sure why we prop it open. They are all fire doors and should be shut though.

Open slightly. I have a fear of not hearing someone break in after reading about the LaBianca killings (committed by Charles Manson's followers) when I was 13.

We used to keep it open when the boys were younger . Now they're older it is pushed to but not on the latch, we've never fully closed it.

The boys all fully shut their doors.

Closed - one to make it properly dark to sleep (we have black out curtains as well) and two for fire safety.

All doors open all the time barring bathroom door. Only exception is when getting dressed/undressed or if one or both DS have company for the night Wink.

Closed. Why in gods name would you sleep with it open?? That way you don't hear the mad axe murderer creep in!!

Open, unless we have guests. I find it too stuffy with it closed. Although from reading about fire safety on here I might review this.

Open. It gets too stuffy and hot otherwise (it's a small bedroom).

Closed.
All doors in thehouse closed.
Cats shut downstairs.
Smoke alarms x2 on every level.
Bonkers to sleep with doors open-if there is a fire you won't stand a chance

Open for the cat when lived alone, also to hear intruders Hmm

Now live with step kids and different cat and allergic DH - door firmly closed all the time, and locked if shagging.

Skeppers · 24/07/2015 08:55

Closed, because of the cat. It wouldn't be so bad if he hopped on the bed and slept, but he just sits and vigorously cleans his arse for HOURS, so now he's barred.

I'm a bit of a safety freak, all doors are closed tight for fire safety!

the majority of doors in home interiors have a 30minute burn time. I think it's actually a requirement in social housing.

I would find it hard to believe that the cheap and nasty door they put on ds1's room would have a 30 minute burn time. One of the things I've been debating is paying for all new doors in the house myself, even though it's a council property.

I do have smoke detectors in every bedroom, plus the upstairs and downstairs main hallways. We played an entertaining game of "which detector is chirping, dammit!" recently, but finally sorted it out.

Lol the things we do for our pets!

Thanks for replies, although now I'm paranoid about fire safety, which isn't really a bad thing. Will definitely be shutting ds door from now on, although will have to have ours open... If cat can't get in she pulls up the carpet whilst making as much noise as possible! Will be thoroughly reviewing our home safety!

It's not so much for fire but for the smoke. I can't find the article but there was a demonstration done - fire in living room - bedroom off living room door close, bedroom down the hall door open. Within a few mins the room with the open door was filled with smoke, the nearer room with the door closed had clean air.

We have our open a small way, just enough for th cat to go through, otherwise he can push the door open and then it closes on him and he wakes me up trying to get out. Also so I can hear the children if they wake crying in the night.

We have 4 smoke detectors in the house.

Jesus... Two children & two adults in my house and not one smoke detector... I'm off to B&Q later.

Depends on location. Flat at mo its closed because the light from the kitchen can be seen and keeps us awake. When growing up it had to be open. At inlaws closed. My parents closed new place, open old place..

Closed, always. This is primarily to keep our cats out who go absolutely crazy if they get on the bed but also because I need as quiet and calm space as possible to sleep. I always have the window open though.

None of our doors hang properly (rented house), so although we close the door, it opens again if there is the slightest bit of movement in the house. So we close it to begin with, but it usually is open at least a little bit by morning.

Closed! I'm a big scaredy cat and I can imagine waking in the night and seeing something/someone standing in my door [pathetic baby emoticon]

My dd is the opposite. She has her door open because she wants to be able to see if there's anything scary there (she's 18!)

Door open here, to allow air to circulate. We have fire detectors all over the place so we'd be woken up in time to get out. And we can exit from the window to a flat roof below if the stairs are blocked.

We have fire detectors all over the place so we'd be woken up in time to get out. Have you done an escape rehearsal, at night? Smoke is quick and very lethal. Better to have the doors closed and good, interconnected smoke alarms.

If the fire fighters are all telling people to close internal doors, I don't understand how people think they are wrong...
