31 years? That is a little gross Tom and it says so so much about you and none of it good imo.

I can well believe Penelope Cruz would be in a sham relationship if she was ambitious enough. She went from vaguely recognisable 'foreign' actress to Hollywood leading lady (although she seems to have taken a back seat from that these days).

redshoeblueshoe · 23/07/2015 18:02

Not everyone considers Scientology a religion.
Whatever their relationship is its hardly equal.

Inkanta · 23/07/2015 18:04

And if you are marrying into Scientology it really is unequal.

Andrewofgg · 23/07/2015 18:08

Her youth is his trophy and his money is hers. Who cares?

CalmYourselfTubbs · 23/07/2015 18:13

gay.
and latently gay probably.
absolutely a beard situation.
oh tom.... just come out already. Sad

swallowed · 23/07/2015 18:14

Well she couldn't possibly say she didn't know what she was getting into. It's all incredibly well documented by now...

Urgh. He's grim.

I think movie stars have a lot of influence on people so a man with his fame always going out with younger and younger women sends a strong message of misogyny imho. I think it has an effect. He has clout. I'm not saying he shouldn't go out with a woman who is thirty years younger, if he is going out with her. But if he is, I think it is dubious, he is a lot older and a lot more powerful and she is in such an unequal position. And I do think it's creepy when men can't seem to have a relationship with an equal.

Religion - a lot of people think Scientology is more of a cult than a religion and there are all sorts of dubious indications about what they do.

Well I am 48 and my son is 18, the idea of looking at any of his friends (most of them good looking lads) and fancying them, never mind having a relationship with them, is all kinds of wrong IMO.

nigelslaterfan · 23/07/2015 18:41

annandale I think the real Tom Cruise is part Bill Clinton and part the character he plays in Magnolia. Demented sexual control freak loon!

He is amazing in that film, just brilliant.

nigelslaterfan Misogyny means hatred of women and I don't see where preferring - and being able to prefer - younger women to older, or come to that the other way round, is an expression of hatred.

She is in an unequal position only if she chooses to stay there or has no choice. Have you any reason to think anyone (including Cruise) would stop her walking out of his life, his house, and his money if she so chose?

AngularMurky · 23/07/2015 19:27

Nicole Kidman was independently wealthy by the time Tom dumped her; she could have hired the best lawyers around if she wanted to keep her kids.

I read on here that as soon as Tom got rid of Mimi Rogers, Nicole Kidman beelined straight for him - a strategic career move on her part. If only she'd taken his cosmetic surgeon with her as part of the divorce settlement - she looks like her face is going to slide down to her knees.

Rainbunny · 23/07/2015 20:39

I hope he leaves that batshit crazy cult someday soon. I have a friend who has worked with TC several times (in film production) and he says TC is a genuinely nice person and great to work with (unlike many other big name stars - but I won't mention names). He is really decent to everyone on set all the time, even when he was in Iceland filming and got the news that Katie Holmes had blindsided him by filing for divorce (my friend was working on that set).

As for the gay thing, has there ever been anything solid to back that up? I mean John Travolta has had several embarrassing stories/lawsuits emerge over the years but I've never heard anything about TC, other than a comment from Mimi Rodgers comparing their relationship to living with a priest. My personal theory is that he is more on the A-sexual side or just has a lower than average sex drive, it's not that uncommon.

nigelslaterfan · 23/07/2015 20:48

Andrew I think it's very common for men to seek younger women but to seek a woman 30 years younger is pretty out there imo.

There are millions of women closer to his age that he could pursue. You have to ask yourself, what is the benefit of pursuing someone who is at the lowest film production level who is young enough to be almost your grand daughter.

The power dynamic is not irrelevant imo. She is virtually a child bride in that situation. I don't think 22 is very old in the face of the TC package. I just wonder if any 22 year old would be equal to that juggernaut of fame and baggage. There is nothing illegal going on of course, I just think there is something deeply undignified of chasing lasses your daughter's age. It doesn't smell of emotional maturity.

OP posts:
Andrewofgg · 23/07/2015 21:50

undignified That's the word!

nigelslaterfan · 23/07/2015 21:58

Also, Nicole Kidman's defence, we just don't know any of the dynamics of those adoptions, she appeared to be a devoted mother. But if Scientology is a psychological cult then she may have had no power to be their mother, they may have rejected her. Her father is a prince of the religion isn't he?

Also wasn't there some sense that the divorce was fairly sprung on her? It was all very odd and clearly surrounded by silencing clauses.

Duckdeamon · 23/07/2015 22:06

I would judge anyone in their 50s going out with someone as young as 22. Yuck.

StarsInTheNightSky · 23/07/2015 22:21

I don't think it's the age gap that's yuck, just TC himself. When I started "seeing" my ex fiance I was twenty, he was fifty two. He wasn't, and still isn't a pervert. This was overseas, where age gaps are more common, but to say that in itself is wrong is a bit much. Sometimes people just click. Ex fiance hated me at first, it wasn't just some midelife crisis thing.

GraysAnalogy · 23/07/2015 22:23

Okay so we're against ageism, we shouldn't judge nor treat people any differently based on their age, but it's okay to judge an older man in a relationship with a woman who is old enough to make her own mind up.

Inkanta · 23/07/2015 22:36

Well I get a foreboding. perturbation and disquiet.

Sleepsoftly · 23/07/2015 22:40

So many armchair experts here on Scientology and Tom Cruise......I feel so deprived. Yawn.

WixingMords · 23/07/2015 22:57

I find everything about him to be creepy.

At 22 if a friend was 'going out' with a 53 year old id have found him grim. A friend of mine was with a much older man at that age, bit younger, and he was controlling and just not pleasant. My opinion is therefore clouded.
