To be repulsed by the way Woody Allen

Gets away with making film after film of a minty old bezzer copping off with Emma Stone, Joaquin Phoenix and Colin Firth (shame on you Colin, for signing up you sinner, and shame on you for that film you did with Emily wot sit) when the actors are old enough to be her dad.
I'm so sick of seeing movies exult this crusty old male fantasy. I guess we should be grateful Woody doesn't book actresses that look under 16, thankful for small mercies for 'artists' pedalling their ill concealed perv-ons.
I can't even enjoy his funny films now.

this trailer 'Love Is All You Need' To actors who are appropriately age matched.

This actress is 43 and doesn't look like she's had surgery. Actually I thought she was older... she's only 43!

Nigel, I love you for introducing me to the phrase 'minty old bezzer'. Made my morning.

Woody's literary equivalent is Colin Dexter. In every book Inspector Morse, a minty old bezzer if ever there was one, cops off with a sexy, much-younger woman. Could this possibly be fantasising on the part of Colin, who is coincidentally about the same age as Endeavour?

MorrisZapp · 23/07/2015 10:33

Yanbu it drives me mad. There's a line in a Woody Allen film (Manhattan I think) where he says to his model girlfriend 'I've fallen for an older woman. Well, not as old as me of course' or similar. That sums the whole thing up doesn't it. Hollywood dates men and women on completely different scales.

And all these decades later his lead actresses remain in their twenties while his male actors get older. Yuck.

I saw a clip of one starring that guy off Curb your Enthusiasm and it was stomach turning.

These guys are all just relishing the fact that they couldnt get a shag while young but now that they're rich and famous they can take their pick. It's embarrassing.

ElephantsAndMiasmas · 23/07/2015 12:05

YANBU it is grim. I have vowed never to watch another of his films.

Massive age gaps generally are a bit suspect. But add in a power differential, and make it a repeating pattern and you get something very, very icky.

GraysAnalogy · 23/07/2015 12:13

Oh but when it's an older woman she's a MILF and it's celebrated.

ReluctantCamper · 23/07/2015 13:13

Not by me it isn't!

AskingForAPal · 23/07/2015 13:15

Er really Grays? I find the Taylor-Johnson relationship every bit as weird. I wouldn't sleep with a 19 year old now, and I'm only a decade older.

TTWK · 23/07/2015 13:36

There's a line in a Woody Allen film (Manhattan I think) where he says to his model girlfriend 'I've fallen for an older woman. Well, not as old as me of course'

But that's a brilliant line. How can you not find that line funny?

MorrisZapp · 23/07/2015 13:52

It's funny but depressing. And illustrates films in general, not just Allen's. Older woman has another meaning in the film world than it does in the real one.

Sam Taylor Wood is barely relevant imo, the only reason anybody had said a word about that relationship is that is bucks the showbiz gender norm.

Male film directors have shagged their much younger lead actresses since cinema's invention.

Bambambini · 23/07/2015 14:27

I don't think it's any better if it's an older woman. The Taylor Johnson thing - i just wonder what she was thinking. A 40 sonething with a teenager and you were the boss? She should have been mature and less selfish and walked away. She could be lovely for all i know but it leaves a bad taste.

nigelslaterfan · 23/07/2015 14:43

It's true, the power difference is vast.

But it doesn't make me feel as nauseated as Bill Wyman and that tiny little Mandy woman he married. That was with full parental support from what I remember. I have less and less time for it.

MitzyLeFrouf · 23/07/2015 14:48

Oh yes the Bill Wyman/Mandy Smith thing was vile. As was the way the press painted her as a harlot and him a treasure!

ShipShapeAhoy · 23/07/2015 14:52

I've only seen a bit of one Woody Allen film, I think it was Manhattan. I found it creepy and not at all funny and stopped watching. Then I found out about him marrying his step daughter and that put me off him completely. I'd say his work is overrated if what I say is anything to go by.

MitzyLeFrouf · 23/07/2015 14:53

I've just google Bill Wyman and had no idea that Mandy Smith's mum married Bill Wyman's son!

SaucyJack · 23/07/2015 14:54

It might be a well-written line TTWK, but I can't personally find it funny in the context of having read the open letter to Hollywood from his child Dylan, who he allegedly sexually assaulted when she was a young child.

ShipShapeAhoy · 23/07/2015 14:55

This is reminding me of something I read recently about 'baby groupies'. Apparently all these famous rock stars slept with young teenage girls in the 70s and it was celebrated.

nigelslaterfan · 23/07/2015 14:56

apologies I 've just started another AIBU about Tom Cruise and his gf being 31 years younger thirty one. I bet her parents are younger than him. I bet they are.

Katie Holmes must want to send in the marines.

OP posts:
LeBearPolar · 23/07/2015 14:57

Yes, that was the only reason I raised an eyebrow at the Taylor Johnson relationship - with her being his director, it didn't seem so far from a teacher having a relationship with a sixth former to me in terms of the imbalance of power.

SweetCharityBeginsAtHome · 23/07/2015 15:40

The Bill Wyman / Mandy Smith saga was just vile. The entire country watched and smiled and made jokes about loveable old Bill and how funny it was that he was a child sex abuser.

nigelslaterfan · 23/07/2015 15:44

Didn't he admit to being with her when she was under 16?

OP posts:
nigelslaterfan · 23/07/2015 15:46

Yes LeBear, it is comparable.

OP posts:
etKrusTe · 23/07/2015 15:47

I bet Katie Holmes is secretly pleased. If tom cruise marries a 22 year old now, it will prove out completely removed from reality he is, how little self-awareness he has.............

ExConstance · 23/07/2015 15:48

Real life - my great aunt eloped with by great uncle when she was 17 and he was 35, they were happily married until he died aged 90+ ran a huge farm together and had 3 lovely children. These things are not necessarily a disaster.

nigelslaterfan · 23/07/2015 15:53

18 years difference and that was then.

Thirty years now looks like child snatching to me.

He needs to grow up is my humble opinion! A 20 year old is simply going to worship him. She isn't old enough to be fair game would be my argument.
