to think 'the sun' is utter scum over the queen's 'nazi salute' ?

it might be 'historical significance' but is it really ? the film taken in 1933 shows the royal family doing nazi salutes. the 'salute' was not really known about then as to what it would come to signify and this seems scummy behaviour on behalf of the sun to print it.
everyone now involved is dead, but the queen still has to hear it,
i'm not into royalty but this seems shitty in my book.

The Queen Mothers brother died at the Battle of Loos.

I doubt she'd be much a fan of the Germans and Nazis after that.

That's rather illogical. Oswald Moseley fought on the Western Front. Many in the British Union of Fascists served in the Great War, and would have seen comrades, friends and relatives killed.

Given the choice between a story about the Royal Family, or Cheryl Cole's ribcage, I'll take the Royals thank you very much.

Egosmum, yes! I made a similar point unthread - what is going on with the timing of this?

PetShopGirl · 18/07/2015 15:25

Sorry, egosum!

I wonder what news we aren't being told today

Oh I think they're trying to bury a corker of a story with an unsurprising smoke and mirrors story from 1933.

here and here

ComposHatComesBack · 18/07/2015 15:46

I think this may lead to the Queen Mother being seen in a more realistic light rather than the white washed 'nation's granny' shite. The Queen and Margaret are children and have no idea of the connotations of that salute.

Here she is, a prominent royal in her mid 30s giving a nazi salute knowing what it symbolises. At the very least it shows questionable.

ilovesooty · 18/07/2015 15:47

Not to mention the fact that the government has reneged on the care home costs cap promised for 2016 which was in their manifesto. It's now been put back to 2020, exposing the Conservatives as liars. That was given very low key coverage yesterday.

I think there is enough evidence already to suggest that the Queen Mother was pretty reprehensible in all sorts of ways. Again I suspect more facts will resurface after the Queen dies.

BlueThursday · 18/07/2015 15:56

The Sun is utter scum and I will never buy a copy.

What I'd like to know is why was the footage kept by the royal family? Hardly a lovely keepsake is it? The shunned uncle and nazi salutes?!

PetShopGirl · 18/07/2015 15:56

I'm not sure that very much will come out after the Queen/Prince Philip etc dies. 'The Palace' will continue to keep a tight rein on everything, as they always have done.

LazyLouLou · 18/07/2015 16:10

Footage was kept as it was family footage from their personal archives, not taken for a newsreel. Which is probably why they have taken an unusual step and commented.

Why was it kept? Well, they do tend to archive everything, as many families do. The real question is why, given the penchant for the red tops to publish such stuff, was it not destroyed. After all, they could have deleted it from history and we would never know! But that wouldn't fit with the 'evil entitled Nazi sympathising bastards' monster shouter theories, would it? Smile

Essentially it appears to have been stolen from them.

But as they are entitled bastards that, presumably, is OK!!??

BlueThursday · 18/07/2015 16:32

With their tendency not to get involved in court cases do we think anyone will be prosecuted for what appears to be theft?

Remember the shambles of the queen at Paul Burrells trial Confused

ilovesooty · 18/07/2015 16:35

I think the whole family probably has too much they don't want the public to know about to risk getting involved in court cases.

GinandJag · 18/07/2015 16:38

As a child of the 70s, we would make Nazi salutes in our play, along with other politically non-correct games. There was no bad intention.

TheCommander · 18/07/2015 17:29

Just for the record, the Queen cannot be sued.

TheCommander · 18/07/2015 17:32

"Here she is, a prominent royal in her mid 30s giving a nazi salute knowing what it symbolises

What did it symbolise in 1933?"

Well, I suppose that they could appreciate it was fascism, the same way that we could always appreciate how wrong the BNP was... it is not that people in the 1930s were most stupid than us...

sweetgrape · 18/07/2015 18:12

I've just seen the film clip on the news and there's no way as someone mentioned it was the start of a cartwheel. The queen mother is the first to do it and then it's obvious her daughter's been told to follow suit. There's absolutely no doubt.

This wasn't quite the same as kids larking about though was it.
