To think MN is getting nastier?

So far this week we've had giving birth referred to as 'calving' (in the context of women having children while young). Someone loved that one so much they immediately commented on what a great expression it was and repeated it.

We've had someone propose that Prince Phillip should be 'humanely destroyed'. swiftly followed up by a similar suggestion about taking him out to a barn or a shed or some such and shooting him.

We've had a thread about the death of a convicted murdered where several posters queued up to tell us they were, smiling or "laughing gleefully" or simply to post "lol" as a one word comment. (Okay she was a vicious killer and will not be much missed, but really?)

Add to all of that the Budget threads where in the midst of people worrying and calculating the cut to their household budget, other people came to gloat and make helpful observations such as "If you can't afford DC, don't have them."

MN didn't used to be nasty. Vigorous, challenging etc; But not nasty.

What's going on around here?

mitzy
Damn it!

Another name change needed....
:)

sharonthewaspandthewineywall · 20/07/2015 19:17

Please someone tell me what happened with la queen? I thought she was a celeb around here?

Baddz · 20/07/2015 19:21

No idea if she was a celeb, but I liked her writing style.
But people used to pile onto her threads and basically tear them apart.
One really odd one was to do with chairs!
As I said, very odd.

limitedperiodonly · 20/07/2015 19:26

I like LaQueen's posts too Baddz.

I always find them very entertaining.

But don't be downhearted for the if you know what to look out for.

Just look a bit harder Wink

Baddz · 20/07/2015 19:28

Oh!

Thanks limited :)

limitedperiodonly · 20/07/2015 19:33

I love that song btw and it's in no way intended as a tribute to LaQueen's purplish prose.

Baddz · 20/07/2015 19:34

It's a great song :)

TiggyD · 20/07/2015 19:36

I can't remember LaQueen. I have such a bad memory with what people write it's embarrassing.

UncertainSmile · 20/07/2015 19:38

Bloody hell, that Waitrose thread linked to earlier turned nasty quickly!

Pagwatch · 20/07/2015 19:40

I don't tend to notice posters leaving unless they are very funny or very kind or both.

I miss Hully. [sadface]
And Getorf [ditto]

Baddz · 20/07/2015 19:40

Yeah...that waitrose thread escalated didn't it??
But I think that's indicative of how timid we have become as a society at criticising obesity.
Obesity is seen as normal these days :(

Baddz · 20/07/2015 19:41

Getorf :( I loved her.

limitedperiodonly · 20/07/2015 19:49

Yeah we should all get our pitchforks out to hunt the obese.

It's awful that I've had to pay extra for those ones with extra long tines because people are so obese these days they don't feel them.

Ubik1 · 20/07/2015 19:50

That SN forum thread is awful. It does remind me of other forums on mumsnet where cliques have emerged and some posters were not challenged by other posters, even when they were clearly overstepping boundaries, due to some perceived status within the group. It's also sort of fascinating that people can do this - the doghouse was another example.

YouTheCat · 20/07/2015 19:54

Very 'Lord of the Flies'.

Is this why I don't like people much? I see this kind of behaviour at work and it's shitty.

Baddz · 20/07/2015 19:54

Limited!
Behave!
You know that's not what I mean.
So many posts along the lines of "I know I'm fat why do Drs keep telling me"
Er...because it's their ethical duty to do so?
A poster the other day said she wasn't that big...she was a size 22!
That's big.
Sorry.

Baddz · 20/07/2015 19:55

It's a bit school yard, I agree.
But I didn't go for all that bullshit when I was at school, so I certainly don't now :)

YouTheCat · 20/07/2015 19:57

I didn't either, Baddz. It all went right over my head, sometimes even when I was the target.

Baddz · 20/07/2015 20:01

Yep!
I was on Facebook for about 6 weeks (my brother kept calling me a Luddite so I joined to shut him up)
I was horrified by the number of old classmates that friend requested me...I didn't like them 25 years ago. I see no reason why I would now!?
I deleted my account rather than offend people by not friending them.

UncertainSmile · 20/07/2015 20:02

There are some boards that I won't venture into. I like a good scrap too, but I still keep away.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 20/07/2015 21:23

Youthecat I guess I dont do grudges either because I genuinely don't remember having disagreements with you Grin

YouTheCat · 20/07/2015 21:26

I can't remember what about tbh. Just a difference of opinion most likely.

No huge slanging matches and name calling or anything. Grin

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 20/07/2015 21:27
Thanks
Sunsetseaside · 20/07/2015 21:50

The waitrose thread was the one I meant, for the record :)

usualsuspect333 · 20/07/2015 21:58

I didn't post on the Waitrose thread. [phew]

You weren't talking about me then. Grin
