To think MN is getting nastier?

So far this week we've had giving birth referred to as 'calving' (in the context of women having children while young). Someone loved that one so much they immediately commented on what a great expression it was and repeated it.

We've had someone propose that Prince Phillip should be 'humanely destroyed'. swiftly followed up by a similar suggestion about taking him out to a barn or a shed or some such and shooting him.

We've had a thread about the death of a convicted murdered where several posters queued up to tell us they were, smiling or "laughing gleefully" or simply to post "lol" as a one word comment. (Okay she was a vicious killer and will not be much missed, but really?)

Add to all of that the Budget threads where in the midst of people worrying and calculating the cut to their household budget, other people came to gloat and make helpful observations such as "If you can't afford DC, don't have them."

MN didn't used to be nasty. Vigorous, challenging etc; But not nasty.

What's going on around here?

I agree baddz but I must say I think some of that was a reaction against the 'heartless Tory cunt' posts that had been doing the rounds for some time.

mrsruffallo · 20/07/2015 17:24

I didn't see people happy about the suffering of sroungers. They agreed with the policies. Nastiness on both sides of that political argument I'm afraid.

Baddz · 20/07/2015 17:28

It was the virtual equivalent of ids doing his happy dance.
Utterly nauseating.
I agree it did get personal...name calling etc but the fact is children are going to go hungry. And be cold, and not have adequate clothing due to this budget. Children of people in work. Madness.
I imagine if you were one of those people you might swear too?

Sunsetseaside · 20/07/2015 17:30

I can't agree that people on a forum like mumsnet can only give their view on the budget if it's favourable to you Baddz but can see why you were upset by it.

mrsruffallo · 20/07/2015 17:31

But the supporters countered those arguments so it was a political debate. And we all know how nasty they become on MN, with a lack of tolerance or real debate from either side.

SabrinnaOfDystopia · 20/07/2015 17:33

God that thread in SN chat is hideous. Chipped, you poor thing.

I must admit, I would never ever come onto MN wanting support now - I've read some horrific threads with clearly vulnerable OPs being flamed to hell and back.

I did post once, wanting support and a shoulder to cry on, about something which upset me greatly - and was basically told I was being stupid, and had no right to feel that way. I ended up practically having to give my life story, as well, in response to some quite hectoring questions. It was in chat, so thank god has gone to the place of the half eaten biscuits now Wink

You do see posters getting some amazing support on here - but it's such a minefield, and it's so unpredictable.

Samcro · 20/07/2015 17:34

i took the easy option and hid the threads

SabrinnaOfDystopia · 20/07/2015 17:35

The budget/food bank threads are hideous too. In fact, I do agree with OP - I do think MN has got nastier.

Baddz · 20/07/2015 17:35

It wasnt their views I objected to.
It was the gleeful and hateful way they were expressed to people who are going to really suffer.

OnAPedalStool · 20/07/2015 17:37

Chipped, that was really awful to read. Thanks Has the poster giving you a hard time been suspended/banned?

Baddz · 20/07/2015 17:40

Sn has gone weird.
It used to be great (I'm going back a few years though)

mrsruffallo · 20/07/2015 17:40

Badz, I only read the beginning of that thread and it seemed fairly civilised. Who was gloating and jeering at unfortunate posters then? (Am not a Tory btw, I just find the left much more abusive and nasty than the right on here.)

mrsruffallo · 20/07/2015 17:41

Yes, MN was always known for its fantastic SN support. Awful to read that thread.

Baddz · 20/07/2015 17:43

That particular poster seems to get away with it, sadly.
Sn is very cliquey now.
I avoid it.

Baddz · 20/07/2015 17:43

There were several threads mrsr...I hid them in the end :(

mrsruffallo · 20/07/2015 17:43

Shame. I wonder if there was a reprimand.

YouTheCat · 20/07/2015 17:44

There was gloating aplenty from a couple of posters further into the thread. It really wasn't nice at all. Telling people they shouldn't be 'sitting on their arses with their 50" tvs and 2 cars and then moaning about the budget' was heartless and wrong and so far from the truth for an awful lot of people.

mrsruffallo · 20/07/2015 17:45

Probably for the best Badz. There is a loud minority on here that bear no relation to anyone I've met in RL!!!

mrsruffallo · 20/07/2015 17:47

Oh dear, YouTheCat, how disappointing.

Baddz · 20/07/2015 17:49

Yeah. I try and keep that in mind!
Such a shame though...mn is such a source of support and help to people who need it.
I got a royal flaming twice (one of which included wishing my children dead)
And I left for a while.
Maybe I need to again for a bit? :(

Sunsetseaside · 20/07/2015 17:50

Please tell me that post was deleted Baddz?

mrsruffallo · 20/07/2015 17:54

No Badzz, stay! Being posters on here, we will always be vulnerable to angry unpleasant individuals who type such things. The more the sane, funny, and kind people stay, they more we drown that kind of nastiness out. I would be enraged to read that directed at anyone but I guess that's what they want.
Did you report?

Sunsetseaside · 20/07/2015 17:57

There's a foul post doing the rounds on chat.

Led by one poster who is ALWAYS present when there's a scrap.

Funny, that.

YouTheCat · 20/07/2015 17:57

We can't let the vile people win.

Baddz · 20/07/2015 17:58

I did.
It was years ago.
But I still remember how sick it made me feel and how many people supported the poster that said it.
Tbh I hadn't read the op properly and I suppose my post did sound flippant, but I didn't mean it to be. I re read the op and posted again offering advice but by then flying monkeys had descended.
Hey ho.
Taught me a lesson!...I always read ops two or three times now! :)
