to go on holiday with my chicken pox ridden DC?

Basically my DC all have chicken pox. we are due to go on holiday in 2 days.

my friend has just said ' I hope you have insurance now you wont be going away' and then proceeded to tell me how unreasonable I was being when I said we were still going and how dangerous it is for others. I am well aware of this, I have several extended family members who are immune-compromised so understand the risks to them.

we are driving to the holiday destination and staying in a stand alone private house with private pool. obviously I will not take DC into the service stations or supermarkets etc but as far as I can see there is no reason for us not to go as they wont be in contact with anyone other than us.

so, AIBU to still go on holiday in this situation.

Still banging on about this one then are we?

What on earth is the matter with most of you scaremongering people.

The OP is probably near her destination now and good luck to her.

HAVE A FANTASTIC HOLIDAY OP!!!!

Crust you should get some better insults banging on just does not cut it.

It's an interesting discussion that people who are interested in the subject matter are perfectly entitled to continue if they wish

crustsaway · 22/07/2015 00:15

And you needsasock, need just that Grin

If someone is so immuno-compromised that they can't risk being in the same Eurostar carriage as OP's family, albeit in a separate car, you really have to question how they are going to manage for the rest of their journey. At some point they have to breathe the same air as a lot of other people; even if they follow similar precautions to OP with portaloos, their own food supplies etc, those travelling with them will need to go to public loos, shops etc and may pick up bugs.

None of which, of course, is in any way intended to support the proposition that the immuno-compromised aren't entitled to go out of the house. But the point is that at some point they or those caring for them have decided that making this journey is worth the risk. You may say that OP shouldn't increase that risk but seriously - is she increasing it one iota? If her family aren't in that carriage with them, what guarantee is there that the substitutes aren't cooking flu, chicken pox, scarlet fever and worse?

Kayden · 22/07/2015 09:31

Ici Chicken pox when you're immuno-compromised is a whole different kettle of fish to catching norovirus. The latter will make me ill and feel like shit. The former means I need immediate medical attention and has a bigger risk factor of complications.

Secondly, you don't have to be that suppressed for chicken pox to be a risk. It's not just a danger to people who have immune systems wiped out by chemo. What about the thousands of people who've had organ transplants, have Crohn's Disease, Systemic Lupus? Are we never allowed to go on holiday or pop to Tesco because some people put themselves first?

NeedsAsockamnesty · 22/07/2015 17:30

Crusts I have plenty of socks, that's why I need an amnesty.

kali110 · 22/07/2015 18:14

Because some people have to work?
It's really depressing having to stay in the house 24 hours a day?

kali110 · 22/07/2015 18:17

I'm glad you have calculated the risk to your family op. Stuff others.

Kayden · 22/07/2015 18:44

I feel like I can't win on MN sometimes. If I stayed at home with my mediocre functioning immune system, I would be vilified for being a benefits scrounger. If I go about with my normal life and expect people to be vaguely sensible with very contagious illnesses, then I am a drama queen.

sparkysparkysparky · 22/07/2015 20:05

You're not a drama queen. Smile

crustsaway · 22/07/2015 21:46

Yes but unfortunately you still have to take responsibility for your own illnesses and I don't mean that unkindly. Its not the rest of the populations fault.

Only1scoop · 22/07/2015 21:50

I'm pretty sure Kayden does just that,

crustsaway · 22/07/2015 21:55

She probably does Only1scoop, there are hundreds of viruses out there though ay.

The OP sounded like she was acting very responsibly about taking the trip and I stick by telling her to go.

Anyway, why are you taking for her?

Kayden · 23/07/2015 09:42

I did say that certain viruses are more dangerous than others. Fortunately, chicken pox is a mild, normal illness for most people. It is particularly concerning for immuno-compromised people.
