to go on holiday with my chicken pox ridden DC?

NighteyesLovesGingerbread · 17/07/2015 11:05

Basically my DC all have chicken pox. we are due to go on holiday in 2 days.

my friend has just said ' I hope you have insurance now you wont be going away' and then proceeded to tell me how unreasonable I was being when I said we were still going and how dangerous it is for others. I am well aware of this, I have several extended family members who are immune-compromised so understand the risks to them.

we are driving to the holiday destination and staying in a stand alone private house with private pool. obviously I will not take DC into the service stations or supermarkets etc but as far as I can see there is no reason for us not to go as they wont be in contact with anyone other than us.

so, AIBU to still go on holiday in this situation.

Rules. I cant be doing with all this ridiculous scaremongering. Common sense should prevail. The OP isn't slinging vials of infectious diseases around, she's going on holiday with her kids that are more or less over chicken pox.

Once again, get over yourselves!

thatsshallot · 17/07/2015 23:12

Oh Crust go boil your head, they are not over they are slap bang in midst of most contagious phase.

Insurance covers pox for this very reason, OP would be very selfish to go in this scenario, to her kids as well as others

hazeyjane · 17/07/2015 23:13

crusts, stop telling us that we are ridiculous and to get over ourselves - there are people here who have had to live with awful consequences of chicken pox.

The op said that her dc have only just come down with it, they may well feel worse in 2 days time, they will definitely still be contagious.

There is a very good reason why all the medical advice (well apart from your sister) is that people with chicken pox should stay home and keep away from the public. It's only for 5/6 days ffs!

honeyroar · 17/07/2015 23:15

Crustaway if you don't like these rules, it's really simple - don't travel abroad. Hardly rocket science....

crustsaway · 17/07/2015 23:16

My head doesnt need boiling thank you sshallot. Im a very reasonable person unllike some.

The OP sounds very unselfish actually and far more reasonable than most.

As far as you saying she's being terrible to her kids you are again being ridiculous.

thatsshallot · 17/07/2015 23:18

Yes cos a 10 hour journey in a car putting pressure on spots that could likely lead to them being infected is fair to them? Dd was so ill with infected pox couldn't even get her to the GP, so yes unfair to DCs

crustsaway · 17/07/2015 23:19

why are you being silly honeyroar? she's not putting anyone in bloody danger at all. the op is very sensible with her approach to all of it, you however are what I call a jobster Grin

crustsaway · 17/07/2015 23:20

did the op say how many spots her kids had? no they arent going to get infected by a car seat. hahahahaha im killing myself laughing here

crustsaway · 17/07/2015 23:22

your child was very ill with it, do you think for a moment the op, who sounds like a very caring parent would do that? really?

honeyroar · 17/07/2015 23:23

You're ridiculous Crust. You're not understanding anything anyone says on any thread, just "banging on" as you term it. It's international health rules, not mine....

thatsshallot · 17/07/2015 23:24

Course they could sitting in place for 10 hours (op herself said they would remain in car) could easily chafe to extent one could get infected, do you even have DCs that have had pox?

Thankfully you are not a medical professional so are not putting others in danger with your ridiculous advice

crustsaway · 17/07/2015 23:28

you havent actually digested what the op was saying have you? you didnt ask how unwell her children were did you. I personally read that they are in a car then getting to their destination and the child is almost over it. Im not making a mountain out of a molehill and becoming hysterical about rules.

The OP sounds very caring and normal. Hence Im saying go. So yet again get over your very zealous selves Grin

Wolfiefan · 17/07/2015 23:29

My DS had a kidney condition. He needed a particular treatment and then got chicken pox and could have died.
Never mind eh?

crustsaway · 17/07/2015 23:33

Im very sorry this happened to you but what on earth has this got to do with the OP? Its a virus and not vaccinated against. People are genuinely rather careful. My son had flu or some other sort of virus, i thought he was over it and went to his nana and grandads over christmas, his grandad died because he contracted the cold from him, these things as tragic as they are happen.

thatsshallot · 17/07/2015 23:33

She doesn't know how I'll they are as it's only day 2 Crust. One families holiday clearly more important that health of others, esp when insurance would cover cost of rebooking or cancellation when all clear. But no, clearly very unreasonable

thatsshallot · 17/07/2015 23:34

Er yes it is vaccinated against in other countries Crust

crustsaway · 17/07/2015 23:34

an underlying condition in a person can do this, its unfortunate but it happens due to the other one being exposed to it. Hence no blame, just circumstance.

honeyroar · 17/07/2015 23:35

Thank goodness you're not in charge of International gateways. We'd have rabies everywhere and you saying "but the mother said they were ok"!

If other countries have agreed rules about infectious diseases then that's that. It doesn't matter what anyone thinks. You could well get turned back at Eurosta. That's fact not hysteria, no matter how well the children seem or how little people care for rules (that are basically there for safety and to protect people who may be affected by these "not so ill" children - many of whom have given examples on this thread if you read back).

Anyway, I'm not repeating this again. I'm off to work. You've either worked it out by now or you never will.

Wolfiefan · 17/07/2015 23:36

There is blame if you knowingly expose others to the illness.

crustsaway · 17/07/2015 23:36

here we go with the extreme hahaha.

crustsaway · 17/07/2015 23:36

OP, you go and have a lovely time!

crustsaway · 17/07/2015 23:38

Im sure the OP is a responsible person and not about to either set off an epidemic nor kill anyone else on the way.

Enjoy your holiday OP.

crustsaway · 17/07/2015 23:41

Im sure the OP is responsible
Im sure the OP knows what to do
Im sure the OP doesnt want to kill anyone
Im sure the OP will have a fab holiday.

As for the rest of you, get over yourselves!!!! and dont be such silly huns.

Wolfiefan · 17/07/2015 23:45

It is extreme to face the very real prospect that your child could die due to chicken pox.
HTH

crustsaway · 17/07/2015 23:51

With all due respect Wolfie if that was the case then I wouldnt put them in the situation where any type of infectious disease was about.

Im so sad for your loss.
