Washing hands after nappy change - MIL thread, sorry

My PIL are staying with us at the moment to look after DS, after I have had an operation. I appreciate is is very generous and lovely of them, and I am grateful.

However, MIL isn't washing her hands after pooey nappy changes. AIBU to be bothered by this? How can I get her to do this without basically implying she's being disgusting? We do have hand sanitizer at the nappy change station, but I found she as using that BEFORE she changed his nappy instead of after! DS is 8 months old, just for info, and my operation means I can't lift or carry him, or bend over/ kneel down, so I can't do it myself at the moment.

x posts. I really bloody hope she got the sack. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Dontstepinthecowpat · 15/07/2015 20:22

I don't believe for a minute 001 has ever worked with patients, to think someone treating vulnerable people would have this attitude is terrifying. I don't care if some think that's hysterical I have worked in many clinical settings with all grades of healthcare staff and have never come across such an attitude.

And we all like home bakes, so must think everyone is like us

chickenfuckingpox · 15/07/2015 20:22

depends i tend to use masses of wipes and if my son has done a solid poop its very little i need to wipe off i do mostly wash my hands but not always i do however wash my hands a lot when im cooking

Rollermum · 15/07/2015 20:23

Shock at 0010001 what was your job in the hospital?

Inertia · 15/07/2015 20:23

Yes, I do wash my hands after handling money or handling pets, and before handling food. My hands remain remarkably undissolved.

00100001 · 15/07/2015 20:23

Errrr no at the time all i was doing regular obs (ear thermometer, BP and pulse.) I wore new gloves between patients.

A bay was 4 patients. So I'd go to bay 1. Wash hands thoroughly and dry. Put on
Disposable apron. Anti bac, put on gloves, do obs, (using a new cap each time for ears), then once done. Take off gloves, put in bin (safely and with out touching any exposed bit) antibac. PUt on new gloves got to bed 2, do obs etc but end of bed 4. Then I'd dispose of gloves and apron.
Then wash hands properly and thouroughly and begin bay 2....

Good enough for you?

Olddear · 15/07/2015 20:24

You washed your hands between every 4/5 patients!!!! Tell me it's not true!!!! I was a nurse for over 30yrs and I cannot believe what I've just read! Dear God! I hope you've never nursed me!

00100001 · 15/07/2015 20:24

I did exactly as I was instructed! In fact I washed more than the nurses did

Gruntfuttock · 15/07/2015 20:24

"feverish"? "hysterical"? No, just normal, routine handwashing. There's no need for any perjorative words.

PuppyMonkey · 15/07/2015 20:24

Am hoping this is one of those "only on MN" things where it turns out not washing hands is in fact extremely rare in real life. Shock

Xenadog · 15/07/2015 20:25

I am utterly aghast that people don't wash their hands after changing any nappy. Why wouldn't you? Soap and water is cheap and easy enough to get to.

I can't believe that people think this is acceptable or normal. It's really really not.

LauraChant · 15/07/2015 20:25

Being a slack type, I am bemused to find I am among the cleaner people here, washing hands after every nappy change for sure. On washing clothes/ changing bed linen threads I usually feel I am a minger.

00100001 · 15/07/2015 20:25

Read my latest.

I was only doing normal obs. Nothing with open wounds, poo etc.

Seriously!

SophiePendragon · 15/07/2015 20:25

No, not bloody good enough. You fool.

00100001 · 15/07/2015 20:26

Well, take it up with NHS at the time, as it was what we were told to do...!

Jollyphonics · 15/07/2015 20:27

I'm a GP, and I've seen how poor some people's hand-washing hygiene is. I once had a patient detach his colostomy bag to show me the sloppy contents, then declined to wash his hands afterwards. I rub anti bac gel on my door handle at work several times a day, and I make a point of avoiding touching door handles in any public places if possible.

00100001 · 15/07/2015 20:27

Honestly, that is what we were trained to do.

TheEagle · 15/07/2015 20:27

I washed my hands more than the nurses

Please tell me where this was so I will never go next nigh or near it

Chottie · 15/07/2015 20:27

I always, always wash my hands after a nappy change. I am shocked at how many people do not wash their hands. It's just gross...........

SophiePendragon · 15/07/2015 20:27

You seem confident that they were correct though. I despair.

NorahBone · 15/07/2015 20:30

Laura - me tooGrin

Rollermum · 15/07/2015 20:30

Exactly Jolly! People are so gross and they are out there in the world touching stuff! Which is why I try not to touch my face when I'm out and about. Doorknob thing is a good idea.

00100001 · 15/07/2015 20:31

Because, I wore gloves and an an apron which swapoed bewteeen patients i and antibacced between patients. And I was only doing obs where no exposure to bodily fluids occurred, on low risk watds. Sometimes I only had to do tempetature which involves zero contact... Honestly!
