Child at theme park the other day? What do you think? We raised our eyebrows and probably initially eye rolled. Or is Zebedee obviously giong to be a cool cat? Guess Zee has a certain ring to it.

I know a 6 year old Merlin :)

CrapBag · 15/07/2015 20:09

dolly I know of someone who worked in a school a few years ago and there was a family of fragrances including DKNY (pronounced Dick Knee! No I am not joking), Armani, Joop and had siblings but didn't know their names. DKNY and so easy of the others would have left though so it can't possibly be the same family!

"Seemed like right up there if i heard someone shout, "Bagpuss, get in for your dinner" or "Maccapacca, stop whacking your brother"."

PMSL at this. Grin

I'd have raised my eyebrows at Zebedee too. No one I know has all these wacky more unusual names you read about on here.

PumpkinPie2013 · 15/07/2015 20:20

I personally don't like the name Zebedee - too unusual for me.

I do wonder sometimes what people are thinking when they name their children. I once taught a child whose name was the name of a planet!! I won't say which planet in case it outs me but I did feel sorry for the child!

Over heard someone today calling for the child whose name was Barney Hmm

Tanito279 · 15/07/2015 21:15

Oh god my daughter is Senna as her dad and gran are huge F1 fans. I allowed it because there is a vampire called Senna in twilight. Ironically she suffered with constipation as a baby Confused

HelloNewman · 15/07/2015 21:18

It's quite sweet, and no worse than Zac.

Stanky · 15/07/2015 21:18

I knew a girl called Zebedee once.

NotReallyAPrincess · 15/07/2015 21:19

I was at school (early to mid 1990s with a Zebedee. Zeb for short. Never met another one!

coffeeisnectar · 15/07/2015 21:28

I heard a mum telling "Raikkonen" to stop mucking about and just pick a bloody toilet and use it, a few months ago. Can only assume that one day little Raikkonen will be working with senna, ayrton and jenson. And maybe the car-girls.

I know a zeb, have no idea what it's short for but he's a horrible kid.

Mummatron3000 · 15/07/2015 21:40

I have heard of girls called Cobweb and Pocahontas before (really!)

Check this out - all baby names registered in Scotland last year... Including baby boys called Blaze, Freedom, Godswill (from my quick skim) Grin

fastdaytears · 15/07/2015 21:48

Mumm that is amazing! Love it. I did not realise you were allowed to name a baby just with an initial though. Is that for real? Amazing.

fastdaytears · 15/07/2015 21:51

Oh my life one little girl called "Channel". Like the sea or the telly. I'm not sure if it'll be better to lie to her about how it's pronounced or not...

PatriciaHolm · 15/07/2015 21:57

Manic - we have friends in common! Can't be two families with a zippy and a zeb...

yogababymum · 15/07/2015 22:06

I don't get the Hmm at the names!

It's a biblical name, surely that's not unusual. Then again I come from a very religious country.

If a name seems unusual maybe it's because your name is not unusual and you can't imagine what it's like to have a "weird/different name".

I have an unusual name as do my kids & DH. Maybe it's because I grew up loving being different (as do/did they) that I see normal names as to safe.

I wouldn't however judge anyone by their name even if it is a planet!!

leftearburning · 15/07/2015 22:50

I once worked with a Zeb, would be in his 40's now. Never occurred to me to ask if it was short for anything. I just accepted him as a lovely person he was.

It really annoys me when people criticize other parents name choices. Its always a personal thing and some families have good reason for making their choices, be it religion, naming after another family member etc.

Just leave them to it and get over yourself!

thegreylady · 15/07/2015 22:59

I know a gorgeous little Zeke.

Melonfool · 15/07/2015 23:21

My friend's son is called Zebedee, I'll ask him if he was at a theme park yesterday.

I think if you know someone with an out there name (especially if you like them) then you get over it very quickly - don't be surprised when some names raise people's eyebrows though - let's face it, it must be one of the reasons you pick it. And some kids don't seem to like their out there names - Didn't really work for Zowie Bowie - did it?

And some kids don't seem to like their out there names

And some people don't like their common, top 10, being 1 of 10 in the same class names either.

Melonfool · 16/07/2015 07:06

I don't think it's an odd name at all. My friends whose son is Zebedee are not British, I just assumed it was a usual name where they come from.

Isn't it in the bible?

Laughing at people's names is a bit rude really.

Onecurrantbun · 16/07/2015 07:32

I think it's quite cool, but I think it could end up being quite a name for the child to live hpcto. If he's the class clown it'll be great, but if he's a bookish sort it could be a lot to carry. I do like the way it sounds though - I know it's traditional but it has a modern sound to it which I like.

kitkat1989 · 16/07/2015 08:28

i know a zebediah and a porsche, when i first heard zebadiah i thought it was weird but it does make sense, his full name is zebediah abraham... but yet hisnparents arent religious at all!

Sooperkat · 16/07/2015 19:02

I went to school with a guy called Jay-Dee. Named by his dad after going to wet the head...

itsstillgood · 16/07/2015 19:17

My great grandfather was an Ambrose. One of my boys has it as a middle name in his memory. Old fashioned perhaps but surely not that odd.

Alisvolatpropiis · 16/07/2015 19:30

Zowie Bowie was always called Duncan Jones. Zowie is a middle name. Though he did go by Joey or Joe for a bit when in his teens.

InQuiteAPickle · 16/07/2015 19:31

Probably totally outing myself here but my DC used to go to school with someone who had a younger brother called Jamiroquai!

I used to hear his mum shouting it across the playground at school pick up time "Jamiroquai, come here! Jamiroquai, get down!" I could never look at them with a straight face. I would have to give him the nick name Jay or Jamie if I was a relative. I could never call him Jamiroquai without pissing myself! Heck, I don't think I can even spell it as I'm not sure I've spelt it right!?
