Child at theme park the other day? What do you think? We raised our eyebrows and probably initially eye rolled. Or is Zebedee obviously giong to be a cool cat? Guess Zee has a certain ring to it.

Yeah Portia is from the merchant of Venice. One of the few cool women in Shakespearean lit (ie, not dead or mad by the end...)

Edenviolet · 14/07/2015 22:43

My ds1 was Zebulon for the first few days but everyone was so bloody rude as I was hormonal and upset that we changed it and used Zebulon as his middle name

ASettlerOfCatan If only it was me trolling! Had I not seen the names written down on paper or heard them pronounced several times, I wouldn't believe myself either. But then there are people who name their kids after a ketchup or something equally as ridiculous. BTW, Porshe was the boy.

zebredee · 15/07/2015 00:24

I like it

BarbaraManatee · 15/07/2015 00:37

There's another family of car-themed names?! The one I know of is all sisters also called Mercedes, Porsche & something else... There may be four of them... Can't remember now - a friend told me she came across them a few years ago.

I know a 4yo Zebedee, also from a Christian family. I love Old Testament boys names, most of which DH vetoed as being too "patriarchal" Hmm, but Zebedee is a step too far even for me. I love Ezekiel though, or Abraham, Moses... I so should've snuck out to register the DC without DH! Wink

Lurkedforever1 · 15/07/2015 00:53

I thought this was about the magic roundabout? Zebedee is the one that's on speed.

FatGirlRuns · 15/07/2015 02:16

Thank goodness I'm too old for any more kids because I really want to call my next two Bagpuss and Maccapacca now.

MidniteScribbler · 15/07/2015 06:09

I had a Zebedee a number of years ago in my class. He was exceptionally cool.

MsAspreyDiamonds · 15/07/2015 06:15

I know a Zee but it's short for the Arabic boys name Zeeshan.
Zebadee is cool but maybe a bit too try hard.

Hammondisback · 15/07/2015 06:35

I like 'Zeb'. The ones that I find a little odd are the initials spelled as words, such as Teejay and Ceejay. Yes, they are real, birth certificate first names, not nicknames.

Notso · 15/07/2015 06:39

It makes my think of Zeb Soames. I like it.

Notso · 15/07/2015 06:40

Sorry fatfingers Soanes.

DangerGrouse · 15/07/2015 06:48

My friends kid has a Hercules in her class. I shit you not.

silverlace · 15/07/2015 06:57

I have never met a Zebedee but I did stop and look once when I heard a mother calling for her son Ebenezer.

DustBunnyFarmer · 15/07/2015 07:09

E'zer Good! E'zer Good ! Ebenezer Good!

BumpTheElephant · 15/07/2015 07:10

I quite like Zeb but the full name does just make people think of magic roundabout.
Ambrose is a lovely name, I have an ancester who had that name born in the 1800s, his brothers all had names like Thomas and William so I don't think it can have been that unusual.

dollydaydream14 · 15/07/2015 10:05

My friends a teacher and she teaches 2 sisters DKNY pronounced da-keen-nee and Joop apparently their brother is called Hugo.

EmmaWoodlouse · 15/07/2015 17:09

I knew a girl at school whose little brother was called Zeb (not sure if that was his full name or short for Zebedee) - he'd be about 43 or 44 now. They were seen as quite a quirky bohemian family, for other reasons as well as his name (the girl's name was less unusual, think something like Sophie or Polly). So although it's very rare, it's not exactly new - parents looking for something different have been using it for quite a while!

I think Zebediah would be easier to live with though - you could still shorten it to the cool sounding Zeb and not have the TV character references.

LilyMayViolet · 15/07/2015 17:14

My friend has a son called Zebedee, he's in his 30 s now. He's always been known as Zeb or Zebby. I think it's a lovely name.

JohnCusacksWife · 15/07/2015 17:58

It may be Hebrew but it's still terrible name to lumber a child with!

Bambambini · 15/07/2015 19:14

I think Zeb is nice, can see it being a "cool" name - i think Zebedee just doesn't sound like a real name - it does sound a bit ridiculous and trying so hard to stand out and be cool.

I know an Ayrton, a Senna and a Jenson.

Alternatively, I know a kid called Sierra.

WhetherOrNot · 15/07/2015 19:45

"Time for bed" said Zebedee

"Fuck off" said Florence

Now which record had that as an ending in the 70s/80s ????

Cocolepew · 15/07/2015 19:55

Was it Jasper Carrott Whether?
