To think today's Royal Christening is deliberate mind-fuckery timewarpery?

It's all so ... 1948? ... mummy pushing the heirloom pram, George's historical fancy dress outfit, the Norland Nanny in her starched uniform, the crown jewels font shipped in from the Tower, the fawning sycophantic voice-over on the BBC helpfully sharing with the little people the details of George's internal monologue ... It still is 2015 is it? Haaaaaalp!!!!! I thought these were the new wave modern Royals? Confused

Nooooooo, I'm with you, I'm being sarcastic (and obviously failing miserably Grin) Seeing as all the "rich people shouldn't bla bla yada yada and we pay for it all" shoulder-chips are out in force and you mentioned sssssh going abroad for your holiday I thought they might not like that. Not while they're at home eating coal etc and re-enacting the Monty Python sketch where they all try and outdo each other about their hard lives.

stopeatingbiscuits · 06/07/2015 15:37

I was marginally surprised to see the nanny in uniform. Actually largely surprised to see the nanny at all - you would think an aunt / godparent / grandparent could keep hands on him in the church.

The pram was aweseome - I saw a pic of the Queen standing by looking down on it nostalgically. Wouldn't be surprised at all if they did it to please her. Cannot imagine them pushing a Bugaboo - and there would no doubt be all sorts of marketing connotations if they did. Whatever it was would sell out in seconds.

We have a Norland nanny, we have never asked her to wear her uniform! I think it must have been done to complete the 1915 look they were going for!

SunnyBaudelaire · 06/07/2015 15:39

" We have a Norland nanny, we have never asked her to wear her uniform "

gosh I would make her wear it non stop, even when sleeping

Yarp · 06/07/2015 15:46

The pictures I saw did make me laugh. It was very 1948. Little Start-Rite shoes, Peter Pan collars, Norland Nannies

windchime · 06/07/2015 15:51

I nearly wept with happiness when I saw them all on the news last night. What a lovely change from shootings, countries in meltdown and David Cameron. Good luck to them all. Those who criticise are just jealous.

sweetgrape · 06/07/2015 16:00

Cringe at the great and the good bowing and scraping to Wills and Kate - I mean really perfectly average middle class type couple achieved nothing personally of note yet people who have done all sorts of clever and talented things doff their caps. Ewwww
Totally agree, I've often thought the same. What on earth have any of them ever done that is worthy of such hero worship. It makes me cringe to see their every word being listened to in awe, like they're some kind of superior being. Laughable really.

sweetgrape · 06/07/2015 16:04

Windchime "you nearly wept with happiness? and those of us with half a brain who criticise the monarchy are jealous??? I can't put into words how crazy and deluded that statement is.

ElkTheory · 06/07/2015 16:05

It was obviously stage-managed and orchestrated to the nth degree, all part of The Royal Show. I wonder exactly what the handlers thought they were projecting. A vague notion of tradition? Harkening back to a golden age that never was, when everyone had mammoth prams and employed uniformed nannies? An attempt to comfort the citizenry that even in this age of anxiety, some things can be relied upon (like odd outfits for toddlers)?

Disclaimer: I am not British and have never fully understood the support the royal family receives in the UK. Further disclaimer: I only looked at the pictures because of this thread. But I do find the imagery quite fascinating. Smile

BabyFeets · 06/07/2015 16:07

I knew someone write a thread on this lol

Weebirdie · 06/07/2015 16:08

Norland encourage the Nannies to wear their uniform in the workplace the same way a nurse would wear a uniform but its up to the Nana and the family she works for if she does or not.

BertrandRussell · 06/07/2015 16:09

I do find the accusation of jealousy bandied about so often really odd.

VenusRising · 06/07/2015 16:15

I have to admit I did glance over at the daily fail photos!

And is it just me, or are there really no black people there, either in the crowd, or as godparents?

Can anyone see one of us non white people there? Is it supposed to look like the 1940s?

Are they all UC Caucasian chinless wonders?
Do they actually have any black/ ethnic friends? How odd not to have a bigger circle of friends than white English people.

Who knew?

keepitsimple0 · 06/07/2015 16:21

Those who criticise are just jealous.

indeed. I too would like 25 million a year for doing nothing.

Weebirdie · 06/07/2015 16:21

Thats an extremely valid point Venus and one I think of often. Its also why I wont buy from Carole's company - when I last looked all the children in the brochure were white.

BertrandRussell · 06/07/2015 16:22

Does anyone remember that seriously bizarre Chatles and Di Christmas card with them all in riding clothes like an advertisement for Simpsons?

GeorgeYeatsAutomaticWriter · 06/07/2015 16:22

Weeping with happiness at the royal family?

Grin Grin Grin

SurlyCue · 06/07/2015 16:23

Why on earth wouldnt the nanny be there? Confused after kate she is probably the person who spends most time with the children. I think it would have been very odd for her not to be there.

Weebirdie · 06/07/2015 16:25

ETA - I just had a quick look and after having to go through quite a few pages of the website I found an Asain woman and one non white wee girl.

There may be more but you'd have to look hard for them.

I thought it all looked lovely. George is totally cute and I think his outfits are perfectly suitable at the events to which he wears them.

Anyone who can back bite about a baby's christening needs to have a word with themselves tbh.

BertrandRussell · 06/07/2015 16:27

Venus- I seem to remember Harry having a "little Paki friend" once. Does that count? Grin

After Kate? Well, who knows the reality of how that house works.

Well exactly but i am assuming your implication is that the nanny probably spends more time with them than kate, in which case, even more reason for her to be there.

You'd have thought that between Will and Kate, they wouldn't actually need a nanny.

Why?
