To think today's Royal Christening is deliberate mind-fuckery timewarpery?

It's all so ... 1948? ... mummy pushing the heirloom pram, George's historical fancy dress outfit, the Norland Nanny in her starched uniform, the crown jewels font shipped in from the Tower, the fawning sycophantic voice-over on the BBC helpfully sharing with the little people the details of George's internal monologue ... It still is 2015 is it? Haaaaaalp!!!!! I thought these were the new wave modern Royals? Confused

To me the pictures evoked a terribly aspirational middle class Cath Kidston-buying, Waitrose-shopping twee person's vision of what a royal baby christening should be. Kind of on a level with a tacky mug you would buy at a gift shop near Buckingham Palace. There was almost nothing truly royal about it at all.

True aristos would be much more stylish and daring and probably drunk to boot . Still I guess it plays well with the target audience (see above: Cath Kidston, Waitrose, tweeness etc).

I think the Silver Cross pram was used in much the same way as any of the state coaches are used at royal occasions. Purely for display purposes.

I'm not sure anyone has said this - maybe someone has - but actually I think the pram is all because of the venue of the Christening.

Bear with me . . .

Royal Babies are usually Christened in chapels in palaces. ie you don't see them arrive. This one is being Christened in a church.

OK so - MASSIVE traditional Christening gown.

Will it go in a car seat? - no. Too puffy and straps won't do up. Can't arrive by car then

Can she arrive in a car seat in something else and get changed? - umm not really will slightly ruin affect, especially as she will have to get changed to be driven back again and none of the public will get to see her in her Christening gown.

Well they could come on foot! That way the public get to see them. Great idea! Will massive Christening gown go in baby's normal buggy? Only if the straps aren't done up.

Can they get away with not doing the straps up in the buggy? Good God no they would be slaughtered for this wilful act of neglect.

Could someone carry Charlotte? Possibly. But maybe Kate wants to be the one to transport her and it is uneven ground and she will be wearing high heels.

Hey! What about one of the old prams? Baby can lie flat and won't need strapping in and there's plenty of room for that massive Christening gown!

I agree with the poster who said the pram was purely for display. A modern pram would not have fitted in with the style of the event.

Sansarya · 08/07/2015 08:12

The only thought I had was "I wouldn't be wanting to push that pram uphill on a gravelly path, wearing those heels" but I guess Kate is more than adequately compensated for that discomfort!

I do think her outfits have got very staid and matronly of late. Compare the cute spotted dress she wore when pregnant with George, to some of the dull coats from her pregnancy with Charlotte. It's a shame as she's still only in her early thirties and has plenty of time to dress like a 50 year old.

The actual pushing of the pram up the hill by the princess was also done purely for effect. Servants and nannies are used for far less arduous tasks with much less physical effort required. Pushing a pram up a hill would normally be a job for the nanny. It really is a different world.

BertrandRussell · 08/07/2015 09:49

I am amused that nobody has mentioned that the baby wasnmr strapped into that pram. Usually Mumsnet would be awash with horror - the "anything could happen" brigade would be out in force..........

keepitsimple0 · 08/07/2015 10:16

I view the royal family in the same light as Hollywood actors and actresses. They put on performances for the public and are massively overpaid for what they do.

the difference is that people give Brad Pitt their money by choice. And Brad Pitt has relatively little sway in government.

blondegirl73 · 08/07/2015 10:38

I have very little time for the royal family and I agree with whoever said they wouldn't curtsy for them. That's the problem I've got really - I firmly believe that everyone is equal - whatever race, colour, sexuality etc they are. Having a royal family who are 'better' than us, who you have to curtsy to, who you're not allowed to speak to unless they speak to you first, is completely at odds with that.

I found it quite odd when Nelson Mandela died and there were reports that the queen was good friends with him - apartheid comes from the same roots as the class system in my opinion. Lauding some people because of the colour of their skin is just as outdated as lauding some people because they happened to be born in a certain family.

I'd far rather have an elected head of state like Ireland.

slippermaiden · 08/07/2015 10:58

Babies aren't strapped into a pram when they are laid down, only when older and sat up. I shoe horned my twins into a smaller silver cross until they were 6 months!

BalloonSlayer · 08/07/2015 14:05

Bertrandrussell yes apart from my post four above yours which hypothesises that the reason the big pram was used is it was the only wheeled form of transport where you don't have to strap a baby in - this being important because the massive Christening gown means you can't use straps.

BertrandRussell · 08/07/2015 14:31

But what if a giant eagle had swooped down and plucked her out of the pram? What if Kate had stumbled, and the pram had rolled down the hill, hit the steps and catapulted the baby into the path of a passing platoon of Light Infantry? What if...........Grin

GreenHamNoeggs · 09/07/2015 05:19

That's why Kate, Pippa and Carole all wore cream.

Confuses the giant eagles you see...

One with Kate and Baby could be Dior New Look i.e. late 40s and one black and white - well anytime up to about 1970 I suppose.

BertrandRussell · 09/07/2015 18:45

It is nice to see George smiling for a change.

But it's all cos play isn't it? Just historical reenactment.. Like Wimbledon.

limitedperiodonly · 09/07/2015 19:18

It is nice to see George smiling for a change.

Yeah, drag him out in front of the citizens like that cunt Louis the Seventeenth who died aged like what, 10?
