What were Always thinking? They were the only brand in the shop and they smell vile! Why? Why would anyone choose this? Confused

Cardi you are making a lot of assumptions about things you dont really know about!

I have used matttress protectors thank you very much! More expensive ones that i was able to fix to the mattress so that they didnt slip and slide around still sometimes got stained, creating more layers for me to then soak and deal with.

Disposable ones with plastic lining - some slip arounds, some rustle and frankly i just dont want to spend extra money on all the time.

I am fine getting up to change my san pro.

I have no idea why this requires your intervention?! I didnt ask for help managing my periods, thank you Hmm
You also dont need to interpret / moderate other people's posts for me either.

Once i have completed my family other options will become available to me. I am ok with this. Confused Not sure why you are so bothered about what i do in my house in my bed regarding my period.

lemonade30 · 03/07/2015 18:42

only you called my overall beneficence in to question on the strength of a misassumption when you admittedly don't know me.

In any case, I doubt I'll think of you much at all following this thread.

kali110 · 03/07/2015 18:49

Same.

oabiti · 03/07/2015 19:34

Are certain posters really arguing about things period-related...I mean, c'mon...

  1. Some women like using the scented pads.
  2. Some women don't.
  3. Some women prefer tampons.
  4. Some women don't.
  5. Some women bleed really heavily.
  6. Some women don't.

How on earth can you find something to argue about? Grin

You're all nuts (and probably pre-menstrual) Grin

Have some Cake

kali110 · 03/07/2015 19:35

I'll take your Cake i love cale. Any excuse!!!

kali110 · 03/07/2015 19:36

Cake even

Dognado · 03/07/2015 19:36

What really pisses me off is that when they first introduced them they would be marked as scented. Now it's the other way round, the few unscented ones are marked as so and the scented ones aren't - basically they've transitioned to scented being the norm.

I think it's disgusting with the feedback they're getting, basically inferring that women are intrinsically unclean and need to mask themselves. I can only imagine it's a male led team. My husband worked for Smith & Nephew at one point and sat in a room of men calling the tampon production line the 'digit' line, like tampon was a bad word even.

oabiti · 03/07/2015 19:37

Haha, Kali, I have just had two slices! Grin

kali110 · 03/07/2015 19:47

I do agree with you there dog, although i like them, it isn't fair that those who don't can't get the unscented ones.

Oab i am so jealous!!

On top of this on the Always website, the Ultra range with ActiPearls are actually listed as unscented, despite the fact that they are clearly scented.

I don't have a problem with scented sanpro being available for those who want it, that's their business. But it needs to be clearly labelled as some women like myself suffer a reaction, and need to know which products are scented and which are unscented, so they can make an informed decision.

NatashaGurdin · 03/07/2015 20:38

It is hard to describe how good washable pads and menstrual cups are until you use them! I think they are worth investing in though especially if you have problems like irritation from thrush etc with disposable ones.

One of the best things I found about using menstrual cups (the Mooncup is just one type and doesn't suit every woman) was that they actually helped to shorten my very heavy, long (because of fibroids) periods by a couple of days. There is anecdotal evidence that I am not the only person to find this out but no one has yet done a study as to why this might be (as far as I know). Also they don't smell because the strong smell from disposables comes from the blood mixing with the chemicals used to bleach the towel to make it appear sterile and white which it isn't but which women apparently like Hmm

I also suffer from some incontinence issues because the fibroids are pressing on my bladder and use the washable ones for this as well and I was told by a physio I saw about it that some women use menstrual cups to help with incontinence as they find that having it inserted as usual (which you can do by using some lubricant even when you aren't having a period because they don't cause drying out) helps support the bladder in some way.

Some posters have mentioned that they would find it difficult to use a menstrual cup while out but there are an array of different sizes and shapes and the biggest ones can hold much more than even the most absorbent towel/tampon so most users find they don't need to change until they get home, also if they do need emptying they can be wiped out and reinserted if you don't have easy access to water while in a toilet cubicle.

Tesco Value 15p sanitary towels rule Grin

kali110 · 03/07/2015 22:02

Natasha that's what i couldn't understand, why would women want them bleached white?

ninaaa · 03/07/2015 22:06

Natasha & kali, I think the whiteness is a psychological thing.

I don't know if this applies to others, but I do associate white materials as being cleaner than stained ones. e.g. If I had stained but clean e.g. underwear, bedsheets etc, I would bleach them, and if that didn't work/ wasn't possible, buy new ones, even though logically I know that they are perfectly clean and hygienic.

Profspice3 · 03/07/2015 22:35

I didn't even realise always did scented pads now as I've been buying supermarket own brands for years. They're much cheaper and I've never had a problem with them (pads and tampons).

sykadelic · 03/07/2015 22:38

They're fabulous (not that brand obviously, the brand I use is faintly scented)! I'm convinced I "invented" them back in High School (not actually but I did consider trying to sell my idea and then a couple of years later they came out).

The reason I love them (as I've said before I'm sure) is that at school one of my mail friends said he could "smell the blood" when a girl was on her period. I was horrified and though there MUST be something you can wear that smells nice to cover up the smell a bit. And ta-da!

ouryve · 03/07/2015 22:44

and probably pre-menstrual

Actually, I'm in that wonderful, relatively pain and ire free, 3-5 days between being on my period and being pre-menstrual again, but carry on.

Gabilan · 03/07/2015 22:48

Around half the world's population will menstruate, many of them every month for over 30 years (barring pregnancy, illness etc.) Frankly I refuse to be embarrassed about the fact that I menstruate. If someone can smell menstrual blood, well I change pads frequently and wash at least once a day, so it's a natural and IMO inoffensive smell.

If someone wants scented pads, fine. But bollocks to using them because of something some teenage boy said at school once.

Alwayswiththechords · 03/07/2015 22:49

I don't like the scented ones, I just don't like the idea of perfume on my foof. I know that's not how they work but to me it feels weird all the same. You don't even get to choose the scent. Why not just spray some of your own perfume on your knickers, at least it wouldn't clash then.

butterfly133 · 03/07/2015 22:50

I got caught out with the scented thing on panty liners. It wasn't a really overpowering scent but I only used one before I realised I wouldn't use them again - not good for skin down there.

I resent this idea that everything on a woman should smell of some artificial perfume all the time. Drives me nuts.

Ninaa i can understand that. Wouldnt bother me what colour they were but i can understand it!

RonaldMcDonald · 03/07/2015 23:15

I'd rather scented towels than smelling menstrual blood
Please use or change more frequently

Yes I can see why people might be persuaded to think bleached fabric is clean and you can get white washable pads if you have a preference for that I think (or make your own) but most of them are various colours and patterns including dark colours so it isn't so much of an issue as far as I can see and I think most users like the colourful fabrics used.

They are a little addictive once you get into them!

kali110 · 04/07/2015 03:13

I don't care what colour they are. Rather strange when you think that they're bleached!
