What were Always thinking? They were the only brand in the shop and they smell vile! Why? Why would anyone choose this? Confused

Yanbu. Completely Agree.

You then worry about smelling all day, as it is a strong smell and not nice.

They kind of "warm up" with use and then stink even more (and I do change them frequently!)

Have thought this for a while, and glad to see a thread about it.

ashtrayheart · 03/07/2015 08:08

I use scented panty liners - I know we are not meant to like them but I find they smell better.

IcecreamHavoc · 03/07/2015 08:10

Standing near them in Sainsburys yesterday was bad enough. I've learnt to sniff each box/packet to make sure it hasn't been smothered in floral crap before I buy. I really wish there was a web chat with the person who thought this was a good idea.

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 03/07/2015 08:11

I have just looked at the earthgirls website.
My first thought was "they are the same kind of thing as dd washable nappies"
My second thought was " excellent. I wished there was a similar thing for me, as some of dd washable nappies look soooo soft and fluffy! "

I will invest in some on payday!

Is any particular brand 'better' for irregular post-partum heavy flow?

ifgrandmahadawilly · 03/07/2015 08:18

Anyone seen the new always ad on TV? Anyone else thinl that seems like the girl in it is boasting that she hasn't changed her pad all night.? Grim.

bumbleymummy · 03/07/2015 09:40

Do people usually get up to change their pad at night? Confused I usually change it just before bed and then first thing in the morning.

OP posts:
Eminado · 03/07/2015 09:53

Bumble it depends on how heavy your flow is surely?

I'd rather get up and change the pad than leave it and have to change all the bedding and buy a new mattress in the morning Hmm

AgathaChristie01 · 03/07/2015 10:00

It's one of the (many) things I learned on MN. Shortly after I joined I read a thread about scented pads. It put me on alert because I would possibly not have noticed before buying, and just thrown my usual brand in the trolley, so thanks to MN I was able to avoid them.
It's getting more difficult though as more brands are doing it.
Ugh to whoever thought it was a good idea. It's not!

PuppyMonkey · 03/07/2015 10:08

Yanbu - had to ditch Always after buying them for 20 plus years because the scented ones bring me out in a big burning rash. Shock

Well done Always. I hope you're reading this thread.

(I also don't get up in the night to change sanitary towel btw Confused)

PuppyMonkey · 03/07/2015 10:11

Buy a new mattress, surely things aren't that bad? Confused

My top tip is wearing a pear of DP's boxer shorts over my knickers for added security at night. Grin

Magicalmrmistofeles · 03/07/2015 10:15

They make me itch incredibly.

I also want to know why tampax put those stupid 'skirts' on the tampons. I now have to change it every time I have a wee which is a lot, I drink about 3.5l a day and would only need to change the tampon every 6 or 8 hours (v light periods). I think its a mrketing ploy to make you buy more.

Eminado · 03/07/2015 10:28

Puppy you dont get up to change your pad but I need to! Why is that so hard to understand?

Surely you are not sitting there telling me how to manage MY periods?!

PuppyMonkey · 03/07/2015 10:32

Course not Em, I was just surprised by your new mattress comment. Please do whatever you like with your sanitary towels, take no notice of me.Grin

Eminado · 03/07/2015 10:45

Well dont be surprised. Some people bleed very heavily.

I ruined our old mattress in our previous flat with endless night time accidents. It looks awful.

We bought a house and i treated myself to s brand new mattress. It is currently pristine and i like it that way.

I put in a super tampon before bed and wear a night always pad but if i dont get up and change it all at about 4am there will be leaks.

bumbleymummy · 03/07/2015 10:47

Eminado, I guess yes, if it was ready heavy you would change. I was replying to grandma's post that suggested it was 'grim' to not change during the night in general.

OP posts:
Eminado · 03/07/2015 10:54

No worries its not a nice thing to have to get up Smile

AlisonBlunderland · 03/07/2015 10:58

I'm past the age of periods and stuff, so never need to go down the sanpro aisle, but I'll take a detour next time so see what all the fuss is about.

I really wouldn't want my bits to smell of a pine forest

Notasinglefuckwasgiven · 03/07/2015 11:23

Glad of this thread as I will be hopefully getting my coil out soon ( it's not agreeing with me at all making me ill ) so shall have periods again. I'm making a note to avoid anything smelling like wardrobe freshening pouches Grin

DustBunnyFarmer · 03/07/2015 11:34

I really wish there was a web chat with the person who thought this was a good idea.

IcecreamHavoc - You are right. This would be an excellent topic for a webchat. I'm going to report your post to suggest it.

I'd also be very interested to hear from a gynaecologist about whether its led to a increase in women being referred to specialists to have their sore fanjos sorted out. My GP warned me off Always products about 5 years ago when I was having problems, as she said lots of her patients were having problems with them and that was well before the latest fad for fragrance!

I feel sorriest for today's teens and young women who missed the golden age of effective sanitary products that hadn't been fucked about with. Today's offering is grim. Talk about insisting on making what you think women want and missing your market!

WonderingMinstrels · 03/07/2015 11:39

Always smell rank, and I can't use tampons.

It might sound weird, but the best thing I have found for v heavy periods is using tena lady pads. They do really long ones which mean no nighttime leaking. Very soft and comfy.

I may invent my own brand of ST called "Nothing's Getting Through This Fucker".

IcecreamHavoc · 03/07/2015 11:42

Lemonade30, your point of view is offensive because your tone is sneers in parts and sound like you think people who don't do what you do are somehow .

Lime8 · 03/07/2015 11:43

Totally agree! They changed them and they are disgusting. Lilets towels are wonderful, I switched to them after the perfume was added!

ninaaa · 03/07/2015 11:45

YANBU

I used Always ultra for years, but had to stop a few years ago due to irritation and thrush. Always now do a perfume free silk collection, but they are quite expensive. I now mostly use Bodyform, but as a few posters have said, they have also started adding scent.

The good news is, they make both scented and unscented versions for normal and long, and night are unscented only. The bad news is that the packets are almost identical. On the scented versions, they have a small flower saying "deo fresh", and the description is in a light blue bubble, but very easy to confuse with unscented.

FanFuckingTastic · 03/07/2015 11:47

That's weird about smelling people on their period, I can always tell a couple of days before that I am about to come on because I get a metallic smell. I worry about people being able to smell that too.

I think I do use Tena pads, but they are scented too.

DustBunnyFarmer · 03/07/2015 12:02

I noticed the period smell more at school when most of my friends were hitting puberty. There was a very unhelpful myth in circulation at the time that you couldn't bathe or shower during your period. Grim. My classmates gradually wised up and things improved. Almost never notice it now.
