What were Always thinking? They were the only brand in the shop and they smell vile! Why? Why would anyone choose this? Confused

why would I mock women for their usage of San pads?

that's an odd assumption.

tametempo · 02/07/2015 21:47

Yes tiny put it better.

Gabilan · 02/07/2015 21:47

you can buy the unscented version too, it's usually right next to the 'fresh' ones on the shelf.

It used to be, when the stinky ones first came out. But these days I can't find them. It's possible they're in large supermarkets in big cities, but they certainly aren't in my rural corner of s/w England.

SoleSource · 02/07/2015 21:47

I am wearing the scented variety now. Making me sore. Which brand is better than Always I haven't found one but now they're scented I can't buy them again!!

GinBunny · 02/07/2015 21:48

I don't think I've ever come across a peer/colleague or friend who is an out and proud San pad devotee

If anyone in my workplace gets caught out they always ask if anyone has a spare pad, never a tampon. Or maybe those who wear tampons are just more organised?

Anyways. I use cheap scented nappy sacks to wrap mine in before I bin them and the combination of sacks and pads make the bathroom stink of rank air freshener when AF is in. I've got next to no sense of smell but it even makes me gag.

nowttodowithme · 02/07/2015 21:49

Does anyone else find most ST's give them a sore fango?

I have to use tampons and towels and every month is any itchy sore few days.

Can anyone recommend a non itchy brand please. Wink

bumbleymummy · 02/07/2015 21:50

I agree Pacific. I don't think it smells of anything. I certainly can't smell myself when I have my period but I can smell these! Surely everyone else can too!

Nowt. My sister in law used to get terrible thrush every month and she's switched to mooncups and washable pads. Maybe worth a go? I haven't tried either myself.

lovepancakes

seriously, I love DDs washables and wish they were around years ago, she likes the eco friendly implications and they are actually very comfortable, not bulky or anything, don't leak, less sweaty, and no staining. we just have a lidded bucket in the bathroom and i bung them in the machine every few days - a wash of their own the heavy days and then the lighter days the last ones go in with a normal coloured wash.

we bought from a firm called earthwisegirl, online, and i think they are called charlie banana - come in all sorts of patterns and at least 3 sizes. each pack comes with a washable purse for storing them in. They have poppers that go round your gusset and for when you fold a dirty one up. They are great.

MadameJulienBaptiste · 02/07/2015 21:52

The plastic ones give me a sore fanjo. They are so absorbent I think they start to absorb skin moisture so my fanjo sticks to them a bit, specially if wearing trousers. I try to find non plastic ones and have washable for at home and night time.

PHANTOMnamechanger · 02/07/2015 21:53

Gabilan · 02/07/2015 21:53

"Does anyone else find most ST's give them a sore fango?"

Not exactly. Towards the end of my period I start to feel as if they're drying me out. I wonder if they are so well designed to draw in moisture that they actually do dry out your skin more than they should.

Cottons are supposed to be good but I got thrush using them. No idea why but it happened twice on the only 2 occasions I used them, not on successive periods, and I rarely get thrush so I haven't used that brand since.

DragonWithAGirlTattoo · 02/07/2015 21:53

"I wasn't aware that grown women used towels for anything more than post partum bleeding."

not patronising in the least bit.... Hmm

"I honestly believed them to be the preserve of teenage virgins so this thread is an education even sans the olfactory/irritant issues."

teenage virgins? are you from the 1950s?

3rdrockfromthesun · 02/07/2015 21:54

The thing I can not understand is why some have to have hearts on them? The thing they are needed for is not heart felt!!!

msgrinch · 02/07/2015 21:55

I think it's a psychological thing Smile yanbu for not liking them though, every vulva to their own. Smile

BathshebaDarkstone · 02/07/2015 21:56

I'm glad I don't have periods since I got the implant. I must have a stroll down the feminine hygiene aisle to see what all the fuss is about! Grin

PHANTOMnamechanger · 02/07/2015 21:57

DD also loves that the washable ones are not sticky - ouch at sticky pads and pubes LOL!

Lovepancakes · 02/07/2015 21:58

Thank you PHANTOM, that is so kind as I'll order some. I love all things washable including my ecloths for cleaning the house and washable mop Smile

bumbleymummy · 02/07/2015 22:00

The washable ones look nice (strange thing to say about a sanitary towel!) . I might order a couple and try them next month. I'm not sure I would feel comfortable using them on the first day though - it's always my heaviest.

I ordered 2 packs of Charlie Banana washables from your lovely link, one pack in black and one flowery!

grumpysquash · 02/07/2015 22:05

I think Lemonade is getting a bit of a bashing here.

I generally thought that women mostly used tampons - of course with exceptions (preference, heavy periods, childbirth related issues etc etc). Of the people I know well enough to discuss with/borrow from, they are all tampon users (there is a big debate about applicator vs not!)

By the time I had DC1 at age 32, I hadn't used a towel for 18 years and all the brands had changed.

I think that if you get along with tampons and prefer them, it is just hard to imagine using towels all the time. But I get that other people prefer towels.

While I'm here, can I hijack with a question? What brands of towels do DDs like to use. I've got some Lillets Teens towel in the drawer for when my DD (12) needs them. But are they good? What else would you recommend?

The stinky ones are shocking. I have never bought or used them, but the smell in the aisle is terrible.

And yes, I have sat next to someone and smelt menstrual blood. She was generally quite unwashed though and the greasy hair smelt worse.

PHANTOMnamechanger · 02/07/2015 22:06

lovepancakes you are my first convert, i hope you get on with them! They seem pricey but then you save so much on disposables over time, so it's an investment, like washable nappies are. DDs are about 2 years old and still come up good as new.

Oh and I can't use tampons, never have been able to even after childbirth. Even the smallest hurts. I insert them correctly before anyone asks and the pain is horrible.
