People who are doing it WRONG

My Dad loves to talk about how he enjoys a good barbecue in this weather, once he even invited a lot of family round for one.

His version of a BBQ is a George Formby grill (natch), and in nice weather he plugs it in outside to cook a burger or sausage on. He is quite evangelical about how clever it is to barbecue that way.

It gives me the gritted teeth rage.

Anyone else who is doing it ALL WRONG? Offload here Brew

The thing i have noticed especially with charcoal bbqs is that the men insist on cooking whether they have any skill in that area or not, they drink beer, chat to guests, put the meat on too early, cook it for far too long and keep it hot on the bbq, they generally fuck up the food. If you cant cook in the kitchen, being outside with the addition of charcoal certainly does not improve your skills.

I am baffled that people can't swivel their bra - how tight are your bras?? I just breathe in and swivel it Grin

My ILs do everything wrong, naturally. FIL laughs at his neighbour because neighbour got his cat spayed. Apparently this is laughable because "it's a cat". FILs cat is always sporting a horrible injury from fighting. It is only necessary to brush teeth once a day, and change underwear every 3 days. And you can forget using pegs on the washing line. Much easier to chase your underwear around the neighbours' gardens at the end of the day...

My mum keeps her bread boards in the freezer. And tries to get me to do the same. Ooookay then.

Ooooh that was good.

WixingMords · 02/07/2015 10:00

Bread boards in the freeze?

I've tried thinking of a reason. I can't. Please enlighten.

schokolade · 02/07/2015 10:02

She says it stops bacteria growing on them. I am a scientist and work with bacteria. Freezing preserves them quite well... she won't listen though Grin

mrssnodge · 02/07/2015 10:06

I put my bra on 'normal' way by fastening at back, but I can only put on a bikini top back to front then swivel- I just cant get the fastener thing to work behind me! Anyone else??

schokolade · 02/07/2015 10:08

Can't enlighten you mrsnodge because I can't even take my bra off without swivelling it round first Grin

PotatoesPastaAndBread · 02/07/2015 10:23

cliffdiver not straps on then fatsten, fasten then straps on.

Lancelottie · 02/07/2015 10:44

To the debate on brown sauce vs ketchup on fishfingers, I shall just add my parents' choice of... melted cheese. With bacon bits.

Lweji · 02/07/2015 10:51

She says it stops bacteria growing on them. I am a scientist and work with bacteria. Freezing preserves them quite well... she won't listen though

She is still right, because whilst preserved, they are not actually growing.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 02/07/2015 10:57

They will still be growing, just a lot more slowly.

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 02/07/2015 10:57

(although not one that works with bacteria)

MothertotheLordsofmisrule · 02/07/2015 11:07

Yep the bacterial growth will be slowed by freezing.

Lapsed scientist.

Dh is painful to watch when folding stuff.

Lweji · 02/07/2015 11:23

Ok, grow very, very slowly. But for all intents and purposes, over the course of months and even a few years, don't.
(I do work with bacteria, but not a bacteriologist)

BritabroadinAsia · 02/07/2015 11:35

Hi catimini, waving to you from HK! Do you have the mixed tea and coffee there too? I thought it was truly local...

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 02/07/2015 11:39

While I can see both sides of the breadboard argument, I have never felt sufficiently troubled by the prospect of a few bacteria on mine that I've felt the need to take action to either slow them down or kill them, beyond normal washing.

My mum's kitchen got infested with weevils once and she started keeping flour in the freezer after that, both to minimise the chances of them getting in and to kill any that did sneak in between the supermarket and home. I got worried that she had gone totally overboard with this when she started keeping tablecloths in the freezer, till she explained that it had broken down but still made a useful storage space and they were only going to use the one in the garage for actual freezing from then on.

Lweji · 02/07/2015 11:41

I know some people at my institution who keep books in broken glass door incubators. :)

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 02/07/2015 11:49

In all my years of watching American movies and tv shows, I never noticed the lack of kettles! Madness! Well I can't go there EVER. Angry

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 02/07/2015 11:58

I may be persuaded by the fact that I think I might be the only person I know who has brown sauce on fish that brown sauce may have other applications.

I will never compromise on the lubrication of food :o

Do those of you who avoid sauces, butter and gravy drool constantly? I can't see how else you would produce enough saliva to even swallow things?

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 02/07/2015 12:02

And now I've decided to call all sauces "food lube" in polite company :o

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 02/07/2015 12:03

Pondering further, perhaps "mastication lubricant" would be more apt.

Lweji · 02/07/2015 12:05

I use water for that, if I need to.

you are making me drool. Time for lunch, I think...

FraggleHair · 02/07/2015 12:21

My colleague who says 'yeahyeahyeahyeahyeah' when a simple nod or 'yes' would suffice is WRONG.

Saying 'yeahyeahyeahyeahyeah' approximately every thirty seconds is VERY WRONG.

schokolade · 02/07/2015 12:29

Yes, growth will be slowed. Also, bacteria will be well preserved. Plus, ordinary washing is good enough. Otherwise why stop there and not freeze your cutlery and bowls?

ceebie · 02/07/2015 12:39

My Dad views himself as a potato-peeling expert. He peels with lots of little, fast movements away from the body.

He is of the opinion that my method of peeling potatoes is WRONG, and it is his mission to re-educate me. I am 40 FFS, I will peel potatoes however I wish, especially in my own home!!!

(My method is long strokes towards the body. I appreciate that each 'peel' is slower but it covers a greater area and has less overlap, so in my view is more efficient)

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 02/07/2015 12:56

Long peels towards the body is correct.

Also when peeling carrots or parsnips, hold the thin end first and peel the thick end (away from the body) and then when you hold the wet peeled bit to do the other end, the increasing width holds the veg in your hand so it doesn't slip out.

Cheese sandwiches should be made with thinly sliced cheese and never grated cheese.
