To think we should cancel our holiday to Tunisia?

So holiday booked to Sousse with Thomas Cooke. Member of the party include two 84 year olds and a child with autism. Not due to go to the end July but reckon we should just persuade TC to refund or reallocate to different country.

Cancel. It's a no brainer. You won't be missing much anyway. It's a pretty grim place ar the best of times.

areyoubeingserviced · 27/06/2015 14:07

Some posters are saying that they wouldn't go to Turkey.
I would feel safer in Turkey than in London.
It only takes one terrorist to kill a number of people. This can happen anywhere..

MrsUltracrepidarian · 27/06/2015 14:09

If they will let you swap ( and I bet they will) you should.
We stayed in Sousse a few years ago and only went to the beach once, not because of terrorism fear, but because the hotel pools were so lovely, and more practical with small DC. The gate to the beach was guarded and you needed to wear ID to get in from the outside. I imagine those beaches & gates will be well-guarded, and people will be less inclined to go outside.

googlenut · 27/06/2015 14:18

They will let us swap but we have to pay quite a lot extra - so they are profiting from the sale of two holidays

OP posts:
prepperpig · 27/06/2015 14:19

It can of course happen anywhere but it is far more likely to happen in certain countries. Particularly muslim countries unfortunately

Sallyingforth · 27/06/2015 14:27

It only takes one terrorist to kill a number of people. This can happen anywhere.
It has happened anywhere, including London and Paris. Even Australia.
But these attacks are far more common in North Africa and the Middle East, and are increasing in frequency and severity.

StormSwept · 27/06/2015 14:38

I wouldn't go. I'm sure that the same place wouldn't be targeted twice but I just could not kick back, relax on a much needed holiday knowing that 37 innocent people lost their lives yards away from where I was sitting, I wouldn't be able to stop thinking about what they must have gone through, the fear. Will they use those same sun beds? Sad Sad. I'm sorry that that question sounds so strange, but it's the thoughts that would go through my head. Those poor people.

I couldn't do it, even if it meant we lost all our holiday money, I wouldn't take my loved ones there.

DustBunnyFarmer · 27/06/2015 14:50

Googlenut - I understand you resent having to pay extra and the additional costs may put you over your holiday budget, but I don't think the tour operators are giving you the hard sell when they say those other holidays will fill up fast. They will have a lot of people to reallocate and you risk losing the more desirable destinations by delaying. People who tend to book last minute will also be now looking to book somewhere before all the slack goes out of the system. I suppose the judgement you make depends on the additional cost, but I'd rather pay a bit extra for a new destination than write off the whole cost of a holiday. If the FCO don't advise against travel to Tunisia, it is unlikely your travel insurer will pay out if you choose not to travel.

We don't keep up with the news as much as we used to, so I only caught the news of this shooting late last night before I turned in. It is really shocking and even the photos in the papers today are very distressing. It must be devastating for people who were caught up in it. I can't help thinking there will be little coverage of the devastation in the families of locals who were gunned down and, coupled with the heartbreaking loss of a loved one, I suspect many will have lost their main earner with no safety net.

MadisonMontgomery · 27/06/2015 15:06

I honestly wouldn't go there now - I know people say security etc will be tightened up but would you realistically be able to relax & enjoy your holiday? I definitely wouldn't go to Turkey either - I've been several times before & enjoyed it, but it's just too close to Syria. We know people are travelling to Turkey to cross the border & join ISIS - what's to stop them crossing back over. If you were a terrorist in Turkey wanting a British target, you'd head straight for Marmaris or one of the other tourist resorts.

googlenut · 27/06/2015 15:11

I object to TC making two lots of profit for selling us a holiday twice

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 27/06/2015 15:34

But surely 2015 holidays to Tenerife have always cost more than the 2015 holidays in Tunisia? I've looked at loads of deals over the past couple of months

Perhaps look at somewhere like Bulgaria if you want an alternative of an equivalent price...

DustBunnyFarmer · 27/06/2015 15:39

Fine, object away. Just bear in mind that you risk losing the opportunity for a decent alternative. Along the lines of "is it more important to be right or to be happy?" perhaps you could suck it up just this once. They will be charging more because the prices they've agreed with suppliers in Europe will be higher than those for north Africa. It's simple economics. Most tour operators run on pretty thin margins these days, given the growth of online independent travel, so they may not be able to cover such a huge event by using their reserves. Bear in mind that Thomas Cook is part of a large German travel company Tui, so it's not just UK travellers they have to repatriate/relocate.

DustBunnyFarmer · 27/06/2015 15:39

I see I cross posted with Hainault making pretty much the same point.

Only1scoop · 27/06/2015 15:42

TC isn't part of Tui.

As I said in PP op I would research where you can go and on what days and look into it. The tour operator won't be making two lots of profit....Tunisia is generally a cheaper destination TFS will be more expensive. Look at where else you could go on that day.

DustBunnyFarmer · 27/06/2015 15:47

OK, I stand corrected about Tui/TC.

googlenut · 27/06/2015 17:15

Why will they not be making two lots of profit

OP posts:
Pangurban · 27/06/2015 17:23

Someone stated they wouldn't parade around semi naked on a beach when the locals don't. I guess you shouldn't parade around museums either as per the shootings in the Bardo Museum in Tunisia, earlier this year.

cuntycowfacemonkey · 27/06/2015 17:24

TBH OP without knowing the cost of your original holiday and the extra you need to pay it's hard to say if they are profiting. I would imagine they are losing money because of this not gaining?

RosesareSublime · 27/06/2015 17:24

without a shadow of a doubt cancel it, not read thread but after the last thread on this topic, a few people said they were going, who knows if they are still alive.

please go somewhere else.

FirstOfficerDouglasRichardson · 27/06/2015 17:25

They won't be making 2 lots of profit. You will be paying the difference, and as other destination fill up and places become less available that difference will increase.

Heebiejeebie · 27/06/2015 17:35

tunisia holiday costs 1000
Tenerife holiday costs 2000

Tenerife holiday costs 1000 more than Tunisia.

How is paying (1 Tunisian holiday of 1000) and 1000, any different to paying 2000? I don't get why you think they are getting a double fee

Jacamaar · 27/06/2015 17:35

My mil is due to take my ds to hammamet in August and she has been offered a refund today.
To be honest after what happened yesterday I was wondering how to tell her that I didn't want him to go

Theoldshmoo · 27/06/2015 17:54

I would definitely cancel if I was booked to go to Tunisia.

I've just looked at Spains travel advice and that is on high threat for terrorism whereas Greece is on a general threat of terrorism Confused

googlenut · 27/06/2015 18:06

Pay 1000 for first holiday and they have made a profit on that.
They will then be able to resell that holiday or recoup costs from insurance.
Then pay the extra in another holiday which they have built profit into. So they have in effect sold us two holidays So netted two lots of profit.

OP posts:
DustBunnyFarmer · 27/06/2015 18:07

Honestly googlenut, I think you are making more of this than you need to. And to be frank, quibbling over the cost of rebooking given how many people have just died is in really poor taste.
