To think we should cancel our holiday to Tunisia?

So holiday booked to Sousse with Thomas Cooke. Member of the party include two 84 year olds and a child with autism. Not due to go to the end July but reckon we should just persuade TC to refund or reallocate to different country.

This is what the current UK Government travel advice is:

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all travel to:
the Chaambi Mountain National Park area
the Tunisia-Algeria border crossing points at Ghardimaou, Hazoua and Sakiet Sidi Youssef
the militarized zone south of, but not including, the towns of El Borma and Dhehiba
within 5km of the Libya border area from north of Dhehiba up to but not including the Ras Ajdir border crossing

The FCO advise against all but essential travel to:
areas south of, and including, the towns of Nefta, Douz, Médenine, Zarzis (including the Tunisia-Libya border crossing point at Ras Ajdir)
within 30km of the border with Algeria south of, and including, the town of Jendouba (this area includes the archaeological sites of Bulla Regia and Chemtou)
the governorate of Kasserine, including the town of Sbeitla

If you travel to the interior of Tunisia, you should do so with a reputable tour guide.

There is a high threat from terrorism, including kidnapping. Attacks could be indiscriminate, including in places visited by foreigners

Make your own mind up! Cornwall it is then...

Make your own mind up! Cornwall it is then...

Just to clarify from my above post... that last line was mine, not part of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office official guidance. Blush

googlenut · 27/06/2015 18:13

Dust bunny - exactly so why is TC profiteering from this? That is much more distasteful. They should be offering everyone refunds - they will get it all back in their insurance anyway

But if you'd booked Tenerife instead of Tunisia 2 months ago, then it would have cost you hundreds of pounds more. It still costs hundreds of pound more. It is a more expensive place to go on holiday. Why should the holiday company give you a free upgrade? Confused

LIZS · 27/06/2015 18:15

Technically they are offering a refund , in the form of credit against another holiday. You aren't obliged to accept Tenerife presumably.

Grin - cheered me up on a very sad thread, re FCO advice to got to Cornwall!

The terrorists are planning attacks through Ramadam ive heard ( read)

Also. A plot to detonate a bomb at a forces event this weekend in London was stopped

If it's tourists they are after then Tenerife/Spain/canaries would be easy enough to get into. Tunisia/Turkey, even easier

I'd just not go to any of them

AnyoneForTennis · 27/06/2015 18:19

Op...I don't think insurance covers terrorist attacks or threats. Have you read the small print?

Meanandlow · 27/06/2015 18:22

Due to go myself in October. Yesterday didn't want to go. But now happy to go

butterfly133 · 27/06/2015 18:29

googlenut, I'm confused, won't TC lose money? I thought their insurers wouldn't pay out in cases like this either?

I understand not wanting to go though. I'm notoriously tight and never lose any money on anything, but I would here.

Sallyingforth · 27/06/2015 18:35

I really don't understand what you are saying googlenut.
People have already explained it clearly.
They will give you a credit for what you have paid, against the higher cost of a more expensive holiday. They are making no more profit than if you had booked directly for the more expensive trip.

Totality22 · 27/06/2015 18:44

Discussed this hypothetically with my DP today and we both agreed if it was just us we'd go but we couldn't take even the minutest chance with DC (I know, I know going on holiday "anywhere" potentially puts them in danger but you know what I mean)

I personally wouldn't take my kids to Tunisia.

Although I am one of those people that had awful preconceptions about Tunisia and would never have booked there to begin with!!

Butlins1 · 27/06/2015 18:56

TC are not going to gain out of this it will cost them a huge amount!!!

googlenut · 27/06/2015 19:00

They make x amount of profit on the holiday we booked to Tunisia
Then say the next holiday to Tenerife has a top up of £700 then part of that extra will be y profit.
So in total TC have made x+y profit from us -

OP posts:
googlenut · 27/06/2015 19:02

I offered to meet them half way for the increase in cost - we just can't suddenly magic up the total extra amount of money though.

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 27/06/2015 19:02

I would never have booked a holiday with kids there anyway. Cancel it. Go to the Scilly isles where it's nice and warm.

Terror alert is severe for Tunisia now"

Should probably also bear in mind thought that terror alert for UK is also currently severe.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 27/06/2015 19:04

Let's put it in simple terms

A holiday to Tunisia costs £1000
A holiday to Tenerife costs £2000. (all figures just pretend)

If the profit TC takes is 10% then they made £100 from your Tunisia booking.

If you then rebook to a more expensive holiday then 10% of the cost is obviously going to be higher than £100.

In the above example, 10% of £2000 is £200, so if they've only had £100 from you of course they are going to take the additional amount.

LIZS · 27/06/2015 19:06

But they would have made x+y had you booked Tenerife originally. There will be costly repercussions for them of rearranging the bookings which will be absorbed if they honour previous prices. Potentially including additional flights and accommodation at a higher rate than they might have secured further in advance. No one expects you to sympathise with the to but the alternative would be you getting your £1000 back and facing rebooking yourself , by which point prices will no doubt have risen again and availability reduced.

butterfly133 · 27/06/2015 19:09

But they won't make x + y because of all the costs involved in changing you over. Plus Foreign Office advice doesn't say you can't go at all, so they are not obliged to refund you or indeed do anything for you I think?

Sallyingforth · 27/06/2015 19:09

They make x amount of profit on the holiday we booked to Tunisia

BUT they are not keeping that x amount of profit.
They are giving you the full credit for the whole cost including the profit.

HainaultViaNewburyPark · 27/06/2015 19:10

Taking Anne's example further:

However, the holiday to Tunisia is now only worth £500 (because less people want to go, so they can't sell it for the 'old' price).

So instead of £100 profit, they have now made a £400 loss.

Even taking into account the extra profit they make on the Tenerife holiday (an extra £100), they have still made a £300 loss.

LucyTheValiant · 27/06/2015 19:14

Would people have concerns about Croatia? Haven't booked anything yet but we were thinking of going in September.

My thoughts are with those who lost loved ones. Such a sad and horrible thing.

Postchildrenpregranny · 27/06/2015 19:16

Norway is beautiful(if expensive)MrsTerryPratchett Though not sunny .Went to Tunisia about 15 years ago.Not sure I'd go again irregardless of terrorism .Infrastructure very dodgy .
