To not understand the obsession, amongst grown adults, with fucking Minions?

My FB news feed.constantly gets clogged up with 'likes' and 'shares' of cheesy quotes from the 'Minions Quotes' page (what have they even got to do with Minions apart from the fact there is one standing next to the words?), videos of 'A Minion kiss, just for you' etc, and pictures of Minions knitted hats, Minions cakes, Minions high heeled stilettos, Minions glittery shit wine glasses, the list goes on.

I have 'half' watched Despicable Me, it was alright. Am I missing something here or am I really just friends with a bunch of infantilised twats?

OP posts:
CuppaSarah · 27/06/2015 07:38

I just don't get it either. I have adult friends who post endless minion shit. They post everything minion they buy, like its some sort of brag and they buy a lot of it.

They were OK in the film sure, but it was so obvious they were just something easy to make merchandise from. That's all they are, a big dumb yellow toy stuck in a film so they can finally use up the piles of ugly yellow plastic someone somewhere had no use for.

Minion quotes are worse than pictures of Betty boop and some quote about justifying your poor behaviour as being 'unique' or 'quirky'

80sMum · 27/06/2015 07:44

YANBU! I had never heard of them till they started appearing in my Facebook news feed. I guess it's just a craze, but I don't care for them. I find them even worse than the 'inspirational' posts of photos of sunrises etc with a quote written over them.

EarSlaps · 27/06/2015 07:52

Was just thinking that I agreed a bit with you, then I looked down and realised I'm wearing minion pyjama bottoms Grin. Also going to see the minion film today and I have made DS a minion hat.

I certainly don't share any minion memes though and all the minion things are for the dcs (apart from the pjs, which are just really comfortable).

kiwimumof2boys · 27/06/2015 11:10

YANBU!
I have blocked all minions -related stuff from my newsfeed. the bloody ones with sayings 'Everything happens for a reason' 'chocolate is a vegetable' did my head in!
Although, my DC are looking forward to seeing the movie soon.
And yes, the Dawn French club ones I have blocked too, they just really annoyed me.

MrsGentlyBenevolent · 27/06/2015 11:19

Like everything super popular, it usually stems from something that's not as good as 'the majority' make out (looking at you Frozen, Star Wars, Harry Potter.....). However, a craze makes merch, that in turn makes money. It's not really a bad thing, bar bringing out greed in some.

Those Minion Memes though, urgh. The passive aggressive ones are the worst - I highly doubt most people would post such arsey things, if it didn't have a picture of a bleeding minion next to it.

EmeraldThief · 27/06/2015 11:19

YANBU

I also have a few thirty something woman who are obsessed with Marvel superheroes on my Facebook. WTF is that all about?

PiperChapstick · 27/06/2015 14:01

OP be glad you don't know the couple who are having a minion themed wedding

KoalaDownUnder · 27/06/2015 14:18

I barely know what they are or where they're from. Although I have seen a picture of bondage minions that is perversely cute.

PacificDogwood · 27/06/2015 14:23

YABU Grin

I don't FB, so no idea what's going on on there wrt Minions, but they are a creation of great genius and we could all learns a lot from them.

Even Mark Kermode rates the Minion movie highly - must be good! Grin

Bana-NA!
Hmmm, Papagena!!

DrankSangriaInThePark · 27/06/2015 14:24

I judge anyone of adult age who is 'into' anything their kids are.
This, I hasten to add, stems from a very traumatic Tweenies concert I sat through with gritted teeth. Behind us was Superdad, who not only called his wife 'Mummy' throughout (and loudly) but treated the entire vicinity to his fucking twatblather about every single kids' Tv show/film/character.
It's down to him that I don't know what a Minion is, aside from them looking a bit like Spongebob.

kiwigirl42 · 27/06/2015 14:24

Can't bloody bear them. Fred up to the back teeth with Minions smilies etc. Really gets on my tits

kiwigirl42 · 27/06/2015 14:24

Fred up? Him too. Fed up!

2rebecca · 27/06/2015 14:25

People want to fuck Minions?

ShelaghTurner · 27/06/2015 14:49

Yanbu. I've taken to de friending people who post minions. Especially those who post photos of themselves in minion t shirts. Grow the fuck up!

DesperatelySeekingSedatives · 27/06/2015 15:57

YANBU god I cant bear it! I've sort of watched despicable me, it was ok, the minions were cute (emphasis on were) but now every time I see yet another pissing minion meme with cheesy as fuck quote on it I hate the colour yellow a little bit each time.

To not understand the obsession, amongst grown adults, with fucking Minions?

I want you all to know that I have NEVER fucked a Minion in my life Hmm

ZaZathecat · 27/06/2015 17:39

YANBU, I have been wondering over this strange obsession too. I liked Despicable Me. I liked Madagascar too but don't feel the need to spread the word according to the Madagascar Penguins.

ZaZathecat · 27/06/2015 17:41

There must have been a huge marketing campaign to brainwash everyone into thinking if you stick a minion next to something it makes it hilarious and unbearably cute.

gemdrop84 · 27/06/2015 17:46

Bananaaaaa! I quite like the minions especially the purple ones. And to the person who posted about 30 somethings who like Marvel Superheros- I am 31 and I fricking love Marvel, the stuff I'm reading at the moment is definitely not for kids (Deadpool anyone?!!) I don't constantly post about them though on facebook. Is that acceptable?!

avocadotoast · 27/06/2015 17:46

I hide this kind of shit when it pops up on fb. Every time. I find it quite therapeutic Grin

UncertainSmile · 27/06/2015 18:24

The people who post them are a pain in the arse. The quotes are usually passive aggressive too.

BertieBotts · 27/06/2015 18:25

There was a great article about this, hang on, I'll find it.

I liked the film but the way they are used with the totally unrelated quotes makes me want to claw my screen apart.

A personal favourite!

Bahh · 27/06/2015 20:02

It's a female thing, I've never seen a man share one. I hate those cheesy quotes at the best of times but add in a minion and I'm cringing so hard.

OH and I have discussed our hatred of them so much it's become a bit of a thing and I've got him a minion bag with a stupid quote on it and will put all his birthday presents in it next week because that is my exact type of humour Grin

MegMurry · 27/06/2015 20:06

OMG. The minions love makes me cringe.

I have a 50+ year old colleague who has brought in a talking minion. She regularly starts it off and chortles away. I want to weep with the cringiness of it.

Adults behaving like 6 year olds. I do not get it.
