WIBU to keep my son off school for this?

So I had a hairdresser appointment this morning for 9.30. I desperately needed a cut and colour before going on holiday next week.

Unfortunately my dd was sick at 7.30am...although she seemed fine afterwards. This meant I had to keep her off school.
Given that the chances of getting another appointment in time for the hols was zero, was I bu to call in a sicky for my eldest son (14) this morning to watch her while I kept the appointment I had? Fridays are a half day at school anyway here.

My hair is looking great now but I don't know if I did the right thing.
What would you have done?

He's 14?

So..serious question now. Do you think on Monday he will tell his friends he was sick? Or tell them you needed a haircut.

I'm not even getting into whether you were u or not.
I'm picturing ds1 face if I asked him to do that? Grin

"Why did I lie? Well I couldn't confess the truth could I? They wouldn't have liked it."

Which means you KNOW it's unreasonable to do this!

Of course it's unreasonable to pull a child out of school for something as trivial as a hair dresser appt. Otherwise you wouldn't have to lie about it or come online seeking assurance from strangers!

Fantoosh · 26/06/2015 16:07

It is true to say the hair is fabulous MrsIt'snow. Wink

Why do people on this website get offended by things that in the real world are incredibly minor

Gileswithachainsaw · 26/06/2015 16:08

Seriously, u would probably have been charged fir appointment anyway. might as well have gone. they dint do much this close to end of term and it was one day.

Anjou · 26/06/2015 16:09
  1. It doesn't matter whether he missed out on something 'massively important' at school or not - it's school. He goes.
  1. You know YABU as you lied to the school about it.
  1. The fact your son was 'delighted' you lied to the school and got him to babysit while you go to the hairdressers is not a good thing.
  1. Holidays in 2 weeks? You'll have roots showing again while on holiday if your hair grows as quickly as mine.
  1. Next time, buy a box of dye from the supermarket.

Oh, and there's little point asking if YABU after the fact. What's done is done but, if I were you, I'd talk to your DS about how you've realised you shouldn't have done this and why.

NiceViper · 26/06/2015 16:09

I'm confused.

You said you only got the appointment because there was a cancellation. So, as it's clearly a salon you know well, you can't have been that bothered about getting an appointment.

What would you have done if there hadn't been one?

I really can't see why you couldn't do whatever that was.

Pumpkinpositive · 26/06/2015 16:10

It's not like they are in charge of whether or not they attend school

Your son certainly isn't, no. Hmm

00100001 · 26/06/2015 16:11

lashes "I don't have a very high opinion of secondary schools and attendance doesn't bother me personally as I feel a child can learn far more when they're not being forced into uncomfortable regimented clothing, having their individuality stamped out of them and being trained to be subservient. That is an entirely different debate however."

Of course, because we never have to fall in line and do as we're asked in the real world.... hmm]

"Ohhh yes I decided not to bother coming into work today, my son needed a hair cut... No, I think it;s entirely fair that I only came in for three days this week.... Oh and this uniform? no I shan't wear that, it's too regimented.... I'm not doing as I'm told by a manager, I'm not subservient... "

That's a way to keep a job... !

Fantoosh · 26/06/2015 16:11

A box of dye from the supermarket? Are you quite mad?! My hair is bright pillar-box red and you can't get that from any box in Boots.

YWVU

If your dd seemed fine after being sick once at 7.30, I would have taken her with me to the appointment rather then keeping the 14 year old at home to look after her.

00100001 · 26/06/2015 16:13

fantoosh I think you're just being goady ....

Number3cometome · 26/06/2015 16:13

If my DD was fine after being sick once at 7:30, I would have sent her to school!!

LashesandLipstick · 26/06/2015 16:13

001, I don't believe school should be about getting a job, I think it should be about encouraging an individual to develop creatively and to follow their passions, to understand who they are, to become the best person they can. But like I said that's another debate and one I'll get called a tree hugging idealist for, so I'd rather not have it.

Anjou · 26/06/2015 16:14

Pillar box red??!!! Easiest dye job ever. I used to have that 20 years ago and would bleach and dye red at home. You have to, otherwise the natural colour shows so quick. Order a job lot and teach yourself via youtube. Or better yet, teach your son so he can do it for you?

Fantoosh · 26/06/2015 16:15

Niceviper - there's nothing to get confused over. I simply left it a bit late to book an appointment, that's all. I called up, was told there was nothing, then they called back half an hour later and offered me a cancellation which I jumped at.

HoldYerWhist · 26/06/2015 16:15

You sound so utterly unconcerned by the whole thing, I wonder why it's still even on your mind!

Number3cometome · 26/06/2015 16:15

Pillar box red? well that'll be all over the hotel sheets, towels and probably in the pool.

That shit runs out of your hair for weeks.

Sparklingbrook · 26/06/2015 16:16

And yet concerned enough to start a thread Hold.

00100001 · 26/06/2015 16:17

I still ask, why couldn't your DD go with you to the salon?? Confused

Fantoosh · 26/06/2015 16:17

Anjou I don't bleach first. Cba with all that faff. The salon has a dye that gets the colour I want without bleaching first, and lasts for about eight weeks. Plus I far prefer having someone else do it for me so the job is perfect. I dyed my hair at home myself for years and it never looked as good as this.

Because there was nothing wrong with her either and she should clearly have gone to school!

LashesandLipstick · 26/06/2015 16:19

Number3 why would you send s child to school who had vomited? Confused

00100001 · 26/06/2015 16:19

"Because there was nothing wrong with her either" - so why didn't she go with Mum to the salon??

usualsuspect333 · 26/06/2015 16:19

Meh, it was only half a day.

I can't get worked up about it TBH. Have a lovely holiday.
